ORLANDO – The University of North Dakota women’s tennis team closed out a perfect week in the Sunshine State for Fighting Hawks tennis, notching a 5-2 win over North Carolina Central on Thursday morning from Orlando, Fla.
The victory extends UND’s winning streak to four and improves the overall record to 11-4, while also concluding a perfect 6-0 combined record for the Hawks in Florida, with both teams finishing with a 3-0 mark.
UND once again got off to a strong start in doubles play, grabbing the point with wins on the No. 1 and 3 court. The top pairing of Ethel Li and Aziza Aubin notched a 6-4 triumph while Alyssa Giupponi and Andrea Pineda helped secure the 1-0 lead for the green and white by a 6-2 score at the bottom spot.
Li kept it rolling moving into singles play, rolling to a 6-2, 6-3 win on the No. 2 court to quickly extend the advantage to 2-0 before Aubin pushed the lead to three from the fifth position by a 7-5, 6-1 score.
North Carolina Central started to rally back, however, posting back-to-back singles wins of its own to trim the deficit to 3-2, but Jule Schulte provided the clinch on the No. 3 court with a pair of 6-4 wins while Pineda closed out the victory on the top spot by a 7-6, 6-1 score.
North Dakota will return home to battle Oral Roberts in a conference showdown at 3:30 p.m. from Choice Health and Fitness.
