John L. Vandeberghe, 92, of Cleveland, ND, passed away peacefully and went to his home in Heaven on Monday afternoon, April 14, 2025 at SMP Health – Ave Maria, Jamestown.
John L. Vandeberghe was born December 3, 1932, the son of John H. and Stella (Barnick) Vandeberghe, on a farm near Edmunds, ND. He was the 4th child and first boy of 9 children. He was born on his father’s birthday. His family moved to a farm near Millarton, ND and from there moved with his family to Portland, OR during WWII where his parents worked in the shipyards as welders. John L. worked with vegetable farmers picking cucumbers, strawberries, and rhubarb. After the war their family lived in various places before settling on a farm south of Cleveland, ND in 1953. John was drafted into the US Army in 1956 and served in Texas and Germany until 1958. He received medals for marksman (rifle) and good conduct.
He met the love of his life, Marjorie Larson, in Cleveland, ND. She was working in Bismarck, ND at the time. After many trips to Bismarck they decided to get married and were united in marriage on January 26, 1963 at First United Methodist Church, Jamestown. They were always a team whether working on the farm or going places together. You rarely saw one without the other. They were blessed with two children John Jay and Sheri Ann. John loved his family dearly and was a great husband, Dad, Grandpa, and role model to his family. He loved socializing, was witty, never at a loss for words and he loved to dance.
They started out farming on a rented farm and eventually, in 1975, they bought a farm of their own south of Cleveland which is still home today. They didn’t move onto this farm until after they built a home on it in 1980. John served on the Sinclair Township board, and was a member of the Cleveland United Methodist Church, and the American Legion for 50 years. He was a farmer at heart and in later years after retiring he was still always concerned with how things were going. He enjoyed checking the fields after planting and watching the crops grow. He was always ready to help out in whatever capacity he could.
John is survived by his wife, Marjorie Vandeberghe; son, John J. (LouAnn) Vandeberghe; daughter, Sheri (Jon) Wert; grandchildren, Devin (fiancée, Emily) Wert, Brenna (fiancé, Kaden) Wert, Alex (Corina) Huff, Janaya (fiancé, Royce) Huff, and Aaron Huff; sisters, Sister Irene Theresa, Patricia Purcell, and Theresa (Bob) Ferguson; brother, Jerry Vandeberghe; sister-in-law, Kathy Vandeberghe; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Virginia (Anthony) Rixen, Valaria (Ted) Heath, and Elaine (Mark) Hammond; and brother, Tom Vandeberghe.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to SMP Health- Ave Maria for all their love and care for our loved one, John L. while he was a resident at the home.
