VALLEY CITY – The Valley City State softball team dropped its Sunday doubleheader to rival Jamestown, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. VCSU fell to the Jimmies 8-0 in 6 innings and then fell 8-3 in the series finale.
The University of Jamestown used aggressive base running to score consistent runs throughout Sunday’s doubleheader. The Jimmies scored at least a run in 10 of 13 innings played Sunday.
Valley City State drops to 17-18 on the season and 6-6 in conference play. Jamestown improves to 27-12 overall and 11-1 in the North Star.
VCSU is slated to travel to Dickinson State April 18-19. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 3/5 p.m. CT (2/4 p.m. MT).
(RV) Jamestown 8, VCSU 0 (6 innings)
Jamestown scattered runs in five out of six innings to continually build its lead Sunday while starting pitcher Hope Ransome held the Vikings to just four hits as she earned the shutout.
Jamestown was off to an early start with a Kayla Quintanilla 2-run triple in the first inning.
The Jimmies built its lead up to 6-0 by the sixth inning when Jamestown hit back-to-back two-out homers from Lauren Weigel and Maddie Spaeth to hold an 8-0 advantage that decided the game by run-rule.
Maddy Zander got the loss for the Vikings after starting in the circle and working 4 complete innings. She allowed six runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four. Cooper Klaahsen pitched 2 innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four Jimmie batters.
Jamestown’s Hope Ransome tossed the shutout Sunday after allowing just four hits in the game. She did not walk a single batter and struck out three.
Weigel was 2-for-3 and Spaeth was 3-for-4 and each tallied a home run for the Jimmies. Weigel scored a team-high three runs while Spaeth and Quintanilla each drove in two.

Jamestown continued its consistent run, delivering eight more runs to take an 8-3 win in the series finale.
Jamestown scored one run in each of the first four innings including a two-out rally in the fourth inning to bring in a run on a Quintanilla RBI single to left field.
VCSU scored its first run of the day on Maddy Zander’s solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning that shifted the momentum of the game. After holding the Jimmies scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, VCSU continued its run. Diemert drew a walk which allowed Kylee Banerd to deliver a 2-run homer on a shot to straightaway center field and cut the Jimmie lead to 4-3.
The teams remained scoreless in the sixth inning to halt the offensive momentum until Jamestown scored a pair of runs on Maddie Spaeth’s 2-run single in the top of the seventh. The Jimmies added two more on RBIs from Sydney Aasen and Trinity Gregg and held off the Vikings in its final at-bat to secure the win.
Madison Hazelton got the loss after starting in the circle and working 6 and 1/3 innings. She allowed eight runs on nine hits, walked four and struck out five. Klaahsen made a relief appearance and struck out one.
Kylee Banerd led the Vikings with two of VCSU’s six hits in the game including a home run, a double and two RBIs. Maddy Zander added a home run for the Vikings.
Jamestown’s Maddie Hairgrove started in the circle and worked 4 complete innings to pick up the win. She allowed three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three. Abby Blair and Hope Ransome each pitched in relief for the Jimmies.
Gregg, Weigel and Amanda Burch each finished with two hits for the Jimmie
