KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.—The University of Jamestown softball team split its first two games Monday in the Klamath Falls Bracket of the 2025 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round at Stilwell Stadium. The Jimmies defeated Arizona Christian University 10-6 in their first game before a late-inning rally by No. 2 Oregon Tech led to a 4-2 loss.
Jamestown (36-16) faces a loser-out game Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Pacific/6:00 p.m. Central against the winner of Arizona Christian and Southeastern (Fla.), who meet in Tuesday’s first loser-out contest at 11:00 a.m. Pacific/1:00 p.m. Central.
GAME ONE: Jamestown 10, Arizona Christian 6
Kayla Quintanilla had the hot bat for the Jimmies against Arizona Christian, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. Her bases-clearing double in the bottom of the second put UJ back in front 6-4, then with the game at 6-6 in the fourth, her second double of the game scored Maddie Spaeth with the go-ahead run.
Maddie Hairgrove (11-1) came on in relief of Hope Ransome in the top of the fourth and worked the final four innings to get the victory. She gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out two.
ACU got to Ransome for three runs on five hits and a Jimmie error in the top of the first. Jamestown responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles by Lauren Weigel and Natalie Draper, and a sacrifice fly from Kaitlyn McCartney.
After the Firestorm retook the lead with a single run in the second, UJ rallied to take their first lead of the game. With one out and runners on second and third, Spaeth was intentionally walked to load the bases, then Quintanilla doubled down the left field line, eventually ending up at third after the throw to home plate.
Two runs in the top of the fourth brought Arizona Christian level, but after Spaeth was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning, Quintanilla doubled to right center to make it 7-6. After taking third on an error by the ACU catcher, Quintanilla came home on a groundout by Draper.
Back-to-back errors with one out in the bottom of the fifth led to two more Jimmie runs, making it a 10-6 game.
Weigel (3-for-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI), Trinity Gregg (2-for-4, 2 runs), Tori Olson (2-for-3), and Sidnie Aasen (2-for-4, 1 run) also had multiple-hit games for Jamestown.
GAME TWO: #2 Oregon Tech 4, Jamestown 2
After defeating Arizona Christian, the Jimmies moved on to play second-ranked Oregon Tech. UJ took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before the Owls scored four times in their final two at-bats to hold off Jamestown’s upset bid.
In the top of the second, Kaitlin McCartney led off with a single through the left side of the infield and was replaced by pinch runner Sonya Rodgers. Rodgers moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tori Olson, then came home on Sydney Grendler’s single to right field for a 1-0 lead.
The Jimmies added to their lead in their next time at bat. Trinity Gregg led off the top of the third with an inside-the-park home run to make it 2-0.
Abby Blair scattered six hits and worked around a pair of walks to keep Oregon Tech off the scoreboard through the first four innings. However, the Owls broke through in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together four hits to produce a pair of runs and tie the game at 2-2.
After UJ went down in order in the top of the sixth, the first two Oregon Tech batters in the bottom of the inning reached, forcing a Jamestown pitching change. Maddie Hairgrove came on in relief of Blair, and the first batter she faced put down a sacrifice bunt to move the Owl runners to second and third. The next batter followed with a single to center, but a fielding error after the relay throw got back into the infield led to both runners scoring, and Oregon Tech led 4-2.
Blair (10-8) went five innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on 11 hits, walked two, and struck out one.
\Maddie Spaeth, Kayla Quintanilla, and Natalie Draper had the other three of UJ’s six hits in the game.
