Al Kapaun, 88, Fingal, ND passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Edgewood Senior Living in Fargo, ND. Al was born July 14, 1936, in Valley City, ND, daughter of Elmo and Florence Kvislen. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sanborn, ND.
She attended Sanborn Public Schools for 6 years followed by Green Consolidated School for 1 year and finished her last 5 years and graduated from St. Catherine’s Catholic School in Valley City. Al went on to St. Catherine’s College, St. Paul, MN for two years and studied nursing.
While in high school Al worked at Dairy Bar in Valley City, a frequent customer Gary A. Kapaun would stop by often and she always gave him extra scoops. Gary and Al would join in marriage at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Valley City on September 6, 1956. Together they enjoyed dancing, traveling building a life and family on a farmstead near Fingal. Al’s dream vacation was a trip to Hawaii, which she loved and talked about for years to come. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Gary’s passing in 2008.
On the farm near Fingal, they raised 7 children. Al enjoyed her large garden on the farm, her perennial flower beds and walking the county line. She also enjoyed golfing with Gary, her daughters and other family & friends. In between raising the kids on the farm, Al worked for Mercy Hospital, Mercy Home Health and Family Weight Loss as a counselor.
Al cherished her Family, her grandkids and her Catholic Faith most in life. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fingal for more than 65 years. As a faithful member of the church Al was a member of the choir, Church Council; serving many terms and felt very privileged when asked to be a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of St. Anne’s Christian Mothers. Belonged to the “Pride & Joy” Homemakers of the area and a member of the Enderlin Bowling Team. She was an avid fan of the L.A. Lakers and the “Niners”.
Al is survived by her 7 children: Jeff Kapaun -Fingal, ND, Perry (Sue) Kapaun- Valley City, ND, Tracy (Anne) Kapaun Broomfield, CO, Robin (Bill) Nagle – Fargo, ND Karen (Jeff) Gummeringer – Pelican Rapids, MN, Candy (Dan) Wingenbach – Jamestown, ND, Gary Kapaun II – West Fargo, ND. 10 Grandchildren, Jason Winge, Kayla Holm, Ethan Kapaun, Mandy Brekke, Tiffany Brekke, Cory Gummeringer, Tabitha Lewis, Jamen Windish, Savannah Wiese and Kassidy Kapaun. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by siblings, sister Bethel Flick – B.C. Canada and brother Elmo Kvislen – Jamestown, ND.
Al was proceeded in death by her husband Gary, her parents Elmo and Florence and two infant great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass for Al (Alice) Kapaun will be celebrated Monday, June 30, 2025, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fingal. Visitation will begin that morning at 9:30. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 with Mass starting at 10:30. She will be laid to rest in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
