Jamestown – Following the recent severe storm that caused significant property damage in the Jamestown area, the City of Jamestown Inspection Department is advising residents and property owners to exercise caution when hiring contractors for repairs.
With an influx of contractors, including those from outside the community, the City reminds the public that any individual or company performing work on a project exceeding $500 in value is required by the City of Jamestown Municipal Code to obtain a City of Jamestown Contractor License.
Sec. 9-43. – License—Required.
No person shall engage in the business nor act in the capacity of a contractor within the city when the original contract cost, value, or price of the proposed building project exceeds the sum of five hundred dollars ($500.00) without first having a license as required in this chapter. This section shall apply to all proposed building projects regardless of whether the contract price is in writing or the subject of an oral agreement.
(Ord. No. 663; Ord. No. 696; Ord. No. 776)
When selecting a contractor, residents should always ask for proof of licensing, verify references, and obtain at least three written estimates before proceeding with any work. A current list of contractors licensed to operate within the City is available on the City’s official website at www.jamestownND.gov.
The licensing process ensures that contractors meet the City’s standards for insurance, compliance with Local, State, and International Building Codes. Hiring a licensed contractor helps protect homeowners from potential fraud, liability issues, and poor workmanship.
Residents seeking more information or wishing to verify a contractor’s license status are encouraged to contact the City of Jamestown Inspection Department directly at (701) 252-5900 or visit the Building Department’s webpage at https://www.jamestownND.gov/180/Building.
