JoAnn “Joie” Heckman, 88, Dilworth, MN formerly Valley City, ND passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Lilac Homes. A Celebration of her life will be held 2pm, Wednesday, August 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City with visitation one hour before the service at the church.

JoAnn Linda Larson, the daughter of John A. and Clarinda (Lewis) Larson of Fertile, MN, on December 1, 1936. Joie went to a one room country school a mile from where she lived. She began her freshman year of high school in Fertile and graduated in 1954. Joie moved to Fargo, ND, where she began her 45-year banking/teller career with First National Bank.

Joey was first married in 1958 and had two beloved children Renae and Mike Boyle. She was later divorced and became a single mother. They were tough years. Joie met her wonderful 2nd husband, Lloyd Heckman from Valley City at a singles dance, she loved dancing! They were married on June 16, 1979, in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Valley City where she continued working with First National Bank, Valley City branch as a teller. As the bank changed ownership over the years, Joie retired from Wells Fargo Bank in 1999. Lloyd passed away September 26, 1995.

On weekends, during the 80s, Joie also was a waitress at the Hilltop Cafe and clerked at Auctions near Valley City. After her retirement, she was a part-time care giver for several ladies in Valley City, running errands for them, dispensing medications, sitting with them, picking up groceries and taking them to lunch. In 2021, at age 85, Joie ended doing care giving but continued to spend time visiting her many friends.

Joie was the type of person that couldn’t say no. She enjoyed being around people and had a very good sense of humor and loved jokes. She always greeted you with a smile. Joie loved her chocolates. She loved shopping. She was always put together with earrings, necklace, lipstick, and a snappy outfit. She looked like a pixie, but was a mighty survivor.

She was on a bowling league in her younger years. She loved to read. She also did beautiful work knitting, crocheting, and had aspirations of quilting.

She was an active member within Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City.

Joie is survived by her daughter Renae Boyle (Curt Woltjer) and son Michael Boyle (Denise); sister Anna Jean (Bunny) Larson; grandchildren Brianna Woltjer, CJ Boyle, Carly Boyle, Laura Boyle Alyssa Fortier; Sisters-in-law, Renee Larson and Clarice Heckman; Brother-in-law Joe Dinich; Nieces Melissa Cox (Larson), Shawn Woolworth, Diane Heckman, Tami Brash, Kathy Langemo, Janet Heckman, and Nephews Kristen Larson Jess Boyle and Greg Heckman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Curt Larson and Sheldon Larson; brothers-in-law Bernie Heckman and Lawrence Heckman, Jack Boyle, Bill Boyle, Delle Boyle, and sisters-in-law Marie Penuel, Gloria Boyle, Maxine Boyle, Kathy Boyle, Ethel Heckman and Geneva Heckman.
