Zachary “Zach” Schlecht, 44, of Bismarck, ND, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck after a courageous two-year battle with oral cancer.
Zach was born December 10, 1980, in Jamestown, ND, to Mark and Ameta Schlecht. He grew up in Jamestown, where he attended St. John’s Academy and later graduated from Jamestown High School. During his school years, Zach enjoyed playing both hockey and football, building friendships and memories that lasted his lifetime.
Zach’s love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hunting and fishing. He was happiest when spending time in nature, surrounded by family, friends, and his dogs. Over the years, Zach worked as a plumber and an electrician, and in recent years, he found pride in his work placing microfiber optics.
For the past eight years, Zach made his home in Bismarck with his beloved partner, Amber. Together they shared a deep and meaningful life, celebrating their love with a commitment ceremony on March 29, 2025. Zach was devoted to Amber and their two dogs, Capone and Penelope, who brought him constant joy.
Zach will be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty as a friend. His empathy and compassion for others touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love and selflessness. Above all, Zach valued his family and cherished every moment spent with them.
He is survived by his partner, Amber; his parents, Mark and Ameta Schlecht; his grandparents, Darwin and Shirley Hoggarth; and numerous aunts, uncles, and extended family members including Brenda and Rob McDonnell, John and Teri Hoggarth, John and Diane Schlecht, Dan and Marion Schlecht, Pat and Cathy Schlecht, Russ and Carol Schlecht, Deb Oakley, Tim Schlecht, Jamie and Rosie Schlecht, and Kay and Rick Albrecht. And many cousins.
Zach was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don and Phyllis Schlecht; his aunt, Laura Hoggarth-Fossum; Tom Schlecht; Elizabeth Doyle; and many other loved ones who welcomed him into eternal peace.
A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Basilica in Jamestown, ND. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor Zach’s memory at this time.
Zach’s courage, kindness, and love will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
