There will be visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Ellendale City Cemetery. Elsie passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Hatton Prairie Village, Hatton, ND with her daughter Shelly by her side.
Elsie was born March 8,1933 to Albert Bertsch and Emma (Heinrich) Bertsch in McIntosh County, ND. She was baptized March 12,1933 at Zion Lutheran Church No. 2., rural McIntosh County and confirmed July 6,1947 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, ND. She attended country school in Beresina Township.
As a young woman, she moved to Ellendale and began working at Hall’s Café. On June 8, 1952, she married Walter C. Schock at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley, ND. Their daughter Shelly was born in 1956. They made their home on a farm 2 miles west and ½ mile south of Ellendale from 1953 to 1998 when they moved to Ellendale. In 2017, she moved into an apartment in Ellendale and later resided in an assisted living facility in Cooperstown, ND and then at Hatton Prairie Village, Hatton, ND until her death.
To help supplement the farm income, Elsie worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store, Whalen’s Meat Market and in the lunchrooms of the East & West Sales Barns.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale, ND and of Circle #3 at her church. She was also a member of a local homemaker’s club, bowling team, and the American Legion Auxiliary and Ellendale/Forbes Drill Team.
Her hobbies were many and varied. She loved to make floral arrangements with her garden flowers and won many ribbons at the Dickey County Fair as well as sharing them with family and friends. She also enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and crafting, making many beautiful things with pinecones. She was an excellent cook, baker and hostess, entertaining for many family and friend gatherings. She loved to dance with her sweetheart and sing with family and friends and loved her clothes and jewelry. She was an avid collector of cups and saucers having amassed over 1000 sets.
Elsie worked side by side Walt in building up their farmstead from scratch and took great pride in keeping their home and yard neat at all times. She helped with most everything in their farming and cattle ranching business, doing most of the combining during harvest.
She was a trusted friend and neighbor and had many adopted daughters. Family meant the world to her. Taylor, her granddaughter, was the light of her life and she spent many hours sharing and teaching her about her hobbies, cooking and baking. When her great-grandson Connor came along, she opened her heart even wider to shower him with love and attention whenever he came to visit.
She had an unshakeable faith and often said she was “ready to go” just not ready to leave her family.
Grateful to have shared in her life are Jim, Shelly, Taylor, Jacob and Connor. She is survived by her sister Esther, brother Leroy (Mary), sisters-in-law Janice and Shari Bertsch and brother-in-law John Weisser and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Walt, her parents, infant sister, brothers Clifford and Delane as well as many in-laws.
