Jamestown ND (UJ) – Three players scored in double figures and the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team dominated the interior to earn a 91-69 victory over Bismarck State College Tuesday evening at Harold Newman Arena.
The victory was number 200 in the career of Jimmie head coach Thad Sankey, who improved to 125-88 since joining Jamestown prior to the 2018-19 season.
Allie Berns led the way with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while the Jimmies (2-0) controlled the glass and the paint to remain unbeaten early in the season.
Jamestown held a narrow 43-35 advantage at halftime but broke the game open in the third quarter. The Jimmies poured in 28 points in the third frame, shooting 58.8 percent from the floor during that stretch to take a 71-57 lead into the fourth.
Berns added seven rebounds and three assists to her 20-point night. Emily Kurkowski and Daviney Dreckman provided strong offensive support, chipping in 15 points apiece. Kurkowski did much of her damage from deep, connecting on 4-of-6 three-point attempts while also grabbing seven rebounds and swiping three steals. Dreckman was efficient from the charity stripe, hitting 7-of-9 free throws.
Jessika Lofstrom anchored the defense with three blocks and matched teammates Berns and Kurkowski with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Jimmies’ size and physicality proved to be the difference maker. Jamestown outscored the Mystics 44-8 in the paint and held a commanding 51-31 rebounding edge, including 15 offensive boards that led to second-chance opportunities.
Jamestown shot 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the field compared to just 28.8 percent (19-of-66) for Bismarck State (0-2). The Jimmies also shared the ball effectively, racking up 19 assists on their 34 made field goals.
Kennedy Stormer turned in an impressive individual performance for the Mystics, matching Berns with 20 points while recording a game-high five steals. BSC relied heavily on the three-ball, attempting 42 shots from beyond the arc, but connected on just 12 (28.6 percent).
The Jimmies head to Bilings, Mont., for the Yellowjacket Classic Friday and Saturday at Montana State University Billings. UJ faces the host Yellowjackets on Friday at 8 p.m. Central and finishes the weekend against Simon Fraser University on Saturday at 1 p.m. Central.
