Romeoville IL (UJ) – The ninth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men’s hockey team bounced back in a big way on Sunday, closing out their weekend road trip with a convincing 4-1 victory over No. 17 University of Utah.
After splitting their first two games of the showcase, the Jimmies (11-7) found themselves trailing early but rallied behind a three-goal third-period explosion to put away the Utes (8-9) at Canlan Sports Romeoville.
Utah controlled the early tempo, outshooting UJ14-9 in the opening period. They were rewarded for their efforts at the 12:22 mark when Gion Coray netted a power-play goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Paul Waldhauser and Matthew Delany.
Despite the early pressure and trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes, Jimmie goaltender Brandon Weare kept his team within striking distance, turning aside 13 shots in the first frame.
The momentum shifted in the second period as Jamestown began to assert themselves offensively, firing 13 shots on the Utah net. The Jimmies finally broke through on the power play at 10:59. James Hooton tallied his fifth goal of the year, with assists from Carson Brown and Weare, to tie the game at 1-1.
The middle frame was a physical affair, featuring multiple penalties on both sides, but neither team could find the go-ahead goal before the second intermission.
The third period belonged entirely to UJ. Marcus Fritel broke the deadlock at 8:41 with the eventual game-winning goal, assisted by Hooton and Jordan Baranesky, giving the Jimmies a 2-1 lead.
Jamestown’s special teams then put the game out of reach. Brown scored a power-play insurance marker at 11:08, his ninth of the season, set up by Ray Warrack.
As the game grew increasingly chippy—highlighted by a major penalty and game misconduct to Utah’s Coltin Johnson for grabbing a face mask—Jamestown added one final blow. With just under a minute remaining, Wyatt Johnson scored an unassisted empty net goal at 19:05 to seal the 4-1 victory.
Weare stopped 33 shots to earn the win. Garrett Fuller made 28 saves on 31 shots for Utah in the loss.
The Jimmies return home to host University of Mary on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 p.m.
