Reverend Doctor Wade Schemmel, 80, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2025, Ellendale, North Dakota, on the day of his 80th birthday. Born on December 11, 1945, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Wade dedicated his life to faith, family, and service.

Wade’s journey of faith began early in life at his home church in Wisconsin, where he participated in Sunday School and choir and later helped teach both. His passion for ministry was evident from a young age and only deepened as he pursued his education. He graduated from Random Lake Community High School in Random Lake, WI, and continued his studies at Lakeland College in Sheboygan earning a degree in instrumental music education. He later earned theological degrees from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, earning a Master’s in Theology, and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois earning a doctorate in Theology.

Answering the call to ministry with the United Church of Christ, Wade embarked on a pastoral career that spanned over five decades. He began serving in Springfield, South Dakota in 1970. In 1977, he moved to Prescott, Wisconsin; then to New Bremen, Ohio in 1983; followed by St. Paul, Minnesota in 1989. In each community he served, Wade brought compassion and leadership to his congregations.

In 2001, Wade accepted the role of Conference Minister for the United Church of Christ in North Dakota. During this time, he played a pivotal role in establishing new churches across the region-including one in Winnipeg, Manitoba-while also supporting numerous community programs tailored to local needs. His commitment to nurturing spiritual growth extended especially to youth ministry; he loved teaching young people and organizing youth trips that left lasting impressions.

Even after decades of service, Wade’s dedication never waned. In 2013 he returned to South Dakota to serve as pastor in Brookings until 2017. He then continued his ministry at a church in Winfred until retiring from active pastoral work in 2019.

Wade was deeply devoted to his family. He is lovingly remembered by his sons Damond and Brice; daughters-in-law Crystal and Kira; and all those whose lives were touched by his kindness and unwavering support. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Peg Schemmel; his parents Golda and Charles; and all of his brothers.

Beyond the pulpit, Wade cherished simple joys-especially sharing a good cup of coffee with loved ones. Known for his kind heart and generous spirit, he was always ready to lend a hand or offer words of encouragement.

Reverend Doctor Wade Schemmel leaves behind a legacy rooted in faithfulness, compassion, and community service. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who continue the work he so passionately embraced.
