Jamestown, ND (Aug 30, 2012) — The College Community Connection Block Party, Thursday evening, featured 95 booths, with an estimated 3,000 people visiting booths and getting aquatinted with Jamestown College freshman, and upper class students.

The annual event gives the community the opportunity to mingle, and businesses, churches, and organizations to make hires, and find more volunteers.

Organizer, Lisa Hicks says if the the event continues to grow, a fourth block of downtown Jamestown may be needed, as some requesting booths this year had to be turned away, due to lack of space.

flags in North Dakota be flown at half-staff today in honor of

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of trying to extort $50 million
from various agencies and threatening to hold tribunals for
politicians told U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson that Erickson
should be arrested for ruining his life.
Brian Jacobson, of Battle Lake, Minn., unleashed the tirade on
Erickson Thursday in a brief hearing to update the case.

Jacobson first complained that he wasn’t receiving proper liquids in jail
and then blamed Erickson for his plight.
Said Jacobson, “I want to see you in cuffs today.”
The judge responded that it wasn’t likely to happen.
Jacobson is charged with two counts of transmitting threatening
communications.

He allegedly demanded to be paid $50 million for an
alleged contract with the city of Fargo and told three North Dakota
politicians he could put them on trial.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A charitable program that distributes
donated deer meat to food pantries across North Dakota also is
accepting goose meat this fall.
Hunters can donate meat from birds killed during the early
Canada goose season to processors that take part in the Sportsmen
Against Hunger program.

There are 11 sites across the state handling the goose donations.

Ann Pollert is executive director of North Dakota’s Community
Action Partnership, which sponsors the charitable program as part
of efforts to help low-income families.

She says the group is “testing the waters” to see if goose donations will work as well as deer donations have in the past.

In the region, Reister Meats in Streeter is participating.
North Dakota’s early Canada goose season opened Aug. 15 and
closes Sept. 7 in the Missouri River zone and Sept. 15 elsewhere in
the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Forest Service is implementing fire restrictions on some national grasslands in the Dakotas because of dry conditions that have elevated the danger of wildfires.

Fires and campfires are being restricted to developed recreation sites equipped with metal fire rings or elevated charcoal grills.

Smoking is being prohibited except within enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed recreation sites and barren areas at least three feet in diameter.

The restrictions go into effect Friday on the Little Missouri, Grand River and Cedar River national grasslands.

Forest Service spokeswoman Babete Anderson says the 5-square-mile Deep Creek 2 fire on the Little Missouri grasslands in western North Dakota is now fully contained.

The fire was sparked by lightning late last week. No structures burned and no people were hurt.

The city recently built a new middle school in the area and is considering a new elementary school. A Walmart also is planned.

St. Alexius’ competitor, the former Medcenter One, recently completed a merger with Dakotas-based Sanford Health.

In world and national news….

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Aides say Republican presidential nominee
Mitt Romney will be laser-focused on jobs and the economy during
the final push to the November election.

Part of the strategy will be to woo voters who put their faith in President Barack Obama four years ago but have soured on him with unemployment stuck at 8.3 percent and the economy sputtering.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Chairman Ben Bernanke delivers a much
anticipated speech today to a Federal Reserve conference today in
Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Investors will be listening closely to detect any hint of Fed action to boost a sputtering economy, but experts don’t think that will happen because of recent, slightly brighter economic news.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – A law enforcement official says a New
Jersey supermarket is the scene of a deadly shooting.

The official says at least three people died early today inside a Pathmark
grocery store in Old Bridge, a suburb about 25 miles from New York.
The store was closed at the time.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Isaac is now a tropical depression swirling
slowly in the nation’s midsection, but Louisianans could face
several more days of misery amid persistent floodwaters and a lack
of electricity.

Officials are pumping water from a reservoir to ease the pressure behind an Isaac-stressed dam in Mississippi on the Louisiana border. In Arkansas, power lines were downed and trees knocked over.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A three-judge federal panel has ruled that
Texas has failed to prove voter ID legislation wouldn’t harm
low-income and minority voters.

The Texas law requiring voters to show picture ID at the polls was struck yesterday in the second legal defeat in three days. Texas’ congressional redistricting was rejected by a different panel Tuesday.
