VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – A memorial service is planned Saturday for a perennial third-party candidate who sparked a change in North Dakota’s election ballots.
Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home says the service for Harley McLain is 11 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Valley City. McLain died Sunday Feb. 9, 2014 at age 62.
McLain ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House and Senate, state offices including the governor and even for U.S. president, from the late 1970s through the 1990s. He is best known for winning a late 1970s court battle to reform North Dakota election ballots, so they rotate which candidates are listed first.
