Jamestown (CSi) The grassland fire danger index for Stutsman County and eastern North Dakota is rated “High,” with dry conditions following warm temperatures over the weekend.

Authorities remind residents with dry conditions, to hold off on any outdoor burning.

The fire danger index indicates the likelihood that a fire will grow out of control, and includes information such as including heat, wind, relative humidity, cloud cover and precipitation – as well as information on the dryness of grasses – to assign one of five ratings to each county.

 

Valley City (CSi) Two people were rescued and this morning another is missing, after the three individuals fell out of a rubber raft on the Sheyenne River in Valley City early this morning, about 1:15 a.m.

Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath says the two individuals were rescued from the river by Valley City police officers  and local residents this morning as the two men were in the river near a dam in Southwest Valley City.

The two men rescued were  taken to  Mercy Hospital, in Valley City, where they are recovering.

Retterath says members of Valley Water & Rescue out of Fargo are assisting Vally City crews by using a sonar device to help search for the missing man.

He says searchers have been using boats and walking along river banks looking for the missing person.

Retterath says the river is high and dangerous. He says flows at Baldhall Dam have been reduced to help aid in the search.

 

Update….

Jamestown (CSi) The trial of a former University of Jamestown student, Robert Flores started Monday morning in Southeast District Court in Jamestown.

Jury selection started for a 12-person jury selected from a pool of 30 potential jurors.. Judge Thomas Merrick is scheduled to preside over the trial.

Prior to jury selection no plea agreement was reached.

Flores is accused of terrorizing, a Class C felony, in a November 7,  2013 incident, with the charge stemming from allegations he threatened to kill and drink the blood of certain UJ students.

The incident resulted in a lockdown of the UJ campus for about one hour. No one was injured in the incident.

Flores was picked up in downtown Jamestown.

The charge is a Class C felony, punishable by five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

 

Jamestown (CSi)  The Jamestown Rural Fire Department fought high wind and another grass fire Friday afternoon at the Pipestem shooting range.

The call came ib about 4:20-p.m., with the fire burning about 200 acres.

Seven fire units  and 22 firefighters responded to Friday’s fire.

In addition to the strong wind, the muddy soft soil hampered fire fighting efforts.

No injuries reported with the JRFD on the scene over three and a half hours.

The  cause is under investigation.

Rurual fire fighters put out four grass fires this past week.

On Thursday, an estimated 120 acres burned southeast of Jamestown.  A fire Tuesday near Highland Home Cemetery burned a small area .  On Monday a small grass fire was put out near the National Guard shop.

Areas residents are cautioned to use care even when the present modertate fire index is present.

At this time there is no burn ban in Stutsman County, but that could change.

Valley City (CSi) The North Dakota Academy of Science will hold its annual meeting Thursday, April 24, 2014, in Rhoades Science Center on the campus of Valley City State University.

The meeting includes professional symposia and presentations, graduate and undergraduate student presentations, and the A. Rodger Denison Award competition for best graduate and undergraduate presentations.

At 6 p.m., Donald Schwert, Ph.D., professor of geology and chair of the Department of Geosciences at North Dakota State University, will present the keynote address, “The Geology of Surface Waters of North Dakota,” in the Student Center Skoal Room on the VCSU campus.

Valley City (CSi) Officials have announced that Pizza Ranch will open its Valley City location on West Main Street on Monday, May 12, 2014, the 14th Pizza Ranch to open in North Dakota.

The Valley City Pizza Ranch will employ 45 to 50 workers.

The restaurant is owned by Bob Bergan and his son, Tommy Bergan, who also co-own the City Lights Supper Club and Taco John’s in Valley City.

The new construction 4,000 square-foot restaurant seats up to 144 guests in a dining room designed after the Old West.

Hours are planned for every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with all day delivery.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police are searching for a man who robbed a local convenience store.

Police say the suspect walked into a Loaf ‘N Jug shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday. Police say the man displayed a handgun to the clerk after demanding money.

Police say the robber then exited the store and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No injuries were reported.

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a 34-year-old man died in a motorcycle accident in Williams County after he failed to see a parked semi-truck.
 
     The Patrol says David Mecham was heading west on a 2000 Harley Davidson on West Front Street near Williston Saturday night when he didn’t see a semi-truck that was parked at a construction site waiting to unload dirt.
 
     The Patrol says the motorcycle and the semi-truck came to rest facing west.
 
     Authorities say Mecham, of Williston, was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.
 
     The incident report shows no charges were filed against the truck driver and the damage to the semi was estimated at $1,000.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Law enforcement authorities in eastern North Dakota say a 48-year-old man has been arrested on a driving under the influence of alcohol charge following a 2-vehicle crash.
 
     Grand Forks Police say the incident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 28th Avenue South and South Washington Street.
 
     Police say a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by 27-year-old Jessica Borowicz was struck by a 2002 Ford F150 driven by the Grand Forks man. Both vehicles went off the roadway and struck separate traffic signs.
 
     Borowicz was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. The man was taken into custody. Police haven’t released his blood alcohol level at the time of the incident.
 
     Police are asking any witnesses of the crash to contact the department.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who led police on a vehicle chase through a North Dakota town and then fought with officers says he will plead guilty in federal court.
 
     The incident happened near New Town in April 2013. Authorities say Dezmond Andres Sr. was pulled over for a traffic violation, but sped off after a passenger left the vehicle. Andres eventually stopped after his front tires blew out.
 
     Court documents show that Andres tried to take refuge in a semi-trailer and was eventually subdued with use of a Taser.
 
     Andres faces a maximum penalty of eight years in prison.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man is facing a counterfeit charge in federal court.
 
     Authorities say Justin Schaden admitted to making counterfeit money last month at a trailer home in Granville. Court documents show that a search of the residence uncovered about $2,000 worth of phony bills in various stages of production.
 
     Schaden told police he passed counterfeit bills at a Wal-Mart and a hotel in Minot.
 
     Schaden has not been asked to enter a plea. His attorney was not available for comment.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota is among 10 states getting more than $95 million from the federal government to address low-achieving schools.
 
     The money is through the Department of Education’s School Improvement Grants program. North Dakota is getting $1.1 million.
 
     Federal Education Secretary Arne Duncan says in a statement that when schools fail, children and neighborhoods suffer. He says turning around low-achieving schools helps provide a better education for students who need it most.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation are criticizing the Obama administration for putting off its decision on the contentious Keystone XL pipeline.
 
Democrats and Republicans alike are calling on President Barack Obama to make a decision on the project.
 
     The pipeline would travel through Montana and South Dakota to a hub in Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines to carry oil to refineries in Texas.
 
     Obama must approve the project, but his administration last week announced it is extending indefinitely the amount of time federal agencies have to review the project.
 
     Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says the delay will hurt federal agencies, and construction and energy industries.
 
     Sen. John Hoeven says Obama is playing a political game on an issue that’s widely supported.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The head of the Federal Aviation Administration is slated to visit North Dakota.
 
     The state’s congressional delegation says FAA Administrator Michael Huerta will make stops in Grand Forks and Williston on Tuesday to review North Dakota’s growing unmanned aircraft industry and get a firsthand look at airport infrastructure needs in the western oil patch.
 
     The FAA late last year named North Dakota as one of six states that will be test sites for integrating drones into civilian airspace.
 

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakotans will be able to get a look at two new galleries at North Dakota Heritage Center next week.
 
     The Heritage Center on the state Capitol grounds is home to the State Historical Society of North Dakota and is the state’s official history museum.  
 
     The museum has been closed since fall 2012 while the facility is undergoes a $51.7 million makeover that will expand the facility by about 100,000 square feet. 
 
A “soft opening” is planned for April 28.
 
     The grand opening for the expanded and renovated center is scheduled for November 2014, which is the 125th anniversary of North Dakota statehood.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston is planning its annual spring cleaning and the mayor says the task has grown with the city’s increased population.
 
     Williston is in the heart of western North Dakota’s oil patch. Mayor Ward Koeser says the  annual cleanup always has relied on volunteers and even more are needed this year with the booming activity in the city.
 
     The cleanup begins Saturday and runs through May 3.
 
     Volunteers will be supplied gloves, safety vests and garbage bags. They also will also receive free T-shirts with the slogan “I Will Keep Williston Clean. Will You?”

 

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. (AP) – Great Lakes Airline suspended its service from Thief River Falls in February, but the small northern Minnesota town has lost more than simply a few weekly flights.
 
     The airline’s suspension has cost a handful of residents their jobs and businesses say the lack of immediate air service hinders business and raises their travel costs. Employees and employers alike both say the air service was a crucial link to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and beyond.
 
     The airline also suspended service to other small towns across the Midwest such as Jamestown and Devils Lake, North Dakota, Ironwood, Michigan and Fort Dodge, Iowa.
 
     Many others, including Pierre and Watertown, South Dakota have seen diminished service as cancellation rates soared. The regional airline industry has blamed new federal regulations for pilots aimed at increasing airline safety.

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot State University has named Tyler Hughes as head football coach.
 
     The school says Hughes, who is currently the head coach at Southern Virginia University, accepted the offer Saturday afternoon.
 
     Hughes was named coach just days after newly hired coach Todd Hoffner decided to return to his old job in Minnesota.
 
     MSU hired Hoffner in late January. He decided to return to Minnesota State, Mankato last week. An arbitrator recently ruled that Hoffner had been wrongly fired from the Minnesota school about a year ago after charges were dismissed in an unfounded child pornography case.
 
     Hughes was hired at Southern Virginia in March after spending a year at Ohio State University as an assistant coach. Before Ohio State, Hughes was head football coach at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.
 

 

   BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A world champion cowboy from North Dakota is among this year’s inductees to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Fifty-year-old Dickinson native Wayne Herman won the world bareback riding gold buckle in 1992 in the seventh of his 11 qualifications for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The current Halliday resident will be inducted on August 9th in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

      KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Twins have claimed outfielder Sam Fuld off waivers from Oakland and designated outfielder Darin Mastroianni for assignment.  HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) – Matt Kuchar (KOO’-char) overcame a four-stroke deficit to finally finish on top, when his stunning chip-in on the 18th hole gave him a 64 and a victory at the RBC Heritage.
 
     Kuchar was four shots behind Luke Donald at the start but made that up with seven birdies on his first 10 holes. John Huh and Ben Martin tied for third.

 

OBIT-HURRICANE CARTER…
 
 
     TORONTO (AP) – Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the boxer whose wrongful murder conviction became an international symbol of racial injustice, died Sunday. He was 76.
 
     He had been stricken with prostate cancer in Toronto, the New Jersey native’s adopted home. John Artis, a longtime friend and caregiver, said Carter died in his sleep.
 
     Carter spent 19 years in prison for three murders at a tavern in Paterson, N.J., in 1966. He was convicted alongside Artis in 1967 and again in a new trial in 1976.
 
     Carter was freed in November 1985 when his convictions were set aside after years of appeals and public advocacy. His ordeal and the alleged racial motivations behind it were publicized in Bob Dylan’s 1975 song “Hurricane,” several books and a 1999 film starring Denzel Washington.
 

  DULUTH, Ga. (AP) – Miguel Angel Jimenez is a winner in his first start on the Champions Tour, finishing two shots ahead of Bernhard Langer at the Greater Gwinnett Championship. Jimenez closed with a 67 for a 14-under total, becoming the third player to lead from start to finish in his debut on the 50-and-over tour. The win comes a week after he finished fourth in the Masters.

 BOSTON (AP) – One year after the deadly bombings, the Boston Marathon will launch today even stronger. It’s the second biggest field ever with 36,000 runners and a big boost in spectators is expected too. Boston’s mayor says there are no specific threats and security has been increased significantly to make sure it stays that way.
 
     JINDO, South Korea (AP) – South Korean President Park Geun-hye (goon-hay) says the decision-making aboard a stricken ferry that eventually sank was “unfathomable’ from a common sense perspective and labeled the captain and some crew members guilty of “unforgivable, murderous behavior.” The official death toll is 64 but expected to rise. The captain and to crew members face charges. Four others have been detained.
 
     BAGHDAD (AP) – At least nineteen people have been killed in a suicide attack just outside Baghdad,  and 36wounded.  Iraqi officials say the attack targeted a police checkpoint. A police officer says the bomber drove an explosives-laden car into the checkpoint today, killing four policemen and five civilians.
 
     DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) – Syria’s parliament speaker says the government plans to hold a presidential election despite the civil war. The speaker says it will be on June 3. Today’s announcement came just hours after a pair of mortars exploded near the parliament building, killing five people. President Bashar Assad is likely to seek another seven-year term.
 
     RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) – Saudi Arabia’s health ministry says there’s been a recent increase in infections and three more deaths from a potentially fatal Middle East virus related to SARS. The deaths were among 13 new cases reported in the kingdom. Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabiah says the ministry is making every effort to contain the virus that has killed 79 people in Saudi Arabia since 2012.
