FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The reward fund for a cattle shooting near
Hankinson in May has grown to $4,100.
The fund was started after 13 cows and a calf were gunned down
in David Kluge’s pasture near the North and South Dakota border.
The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association says it recently
received $500 donations from Ransom Angus of Rutland, Sundance Farm
Distributing of Hankinson, Wade and Lynn Moser of Bismarck, and
Leona Bush of Bismarck.
Richard Clise (klys) of Camano Island, Wash., was the first
person to contribute to the fund. He gave $1,000.
A $10,000 reward is being offered in a separate Oliver County
case where nine head of cattle were shot. The owners of those
animals put up $9,000.
The stockmen’s group offers a standing $1,000 reward in cases of
livestock criminals.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Officials say lightning struck a
saltwater tank near Williston causing the contents and the tank to
burn.
The Williston Rural Fire Department responded to the blaze last
week.
Fire Chief Dave Benth tells the Dickinson Press that the
fiberglass tank held a mixture of gas and saltwater. When the
lightning struck the tank, the gas caught on fire, causing the tank
to burn.
Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A proposed budget for North Dakota’s
colleges includes $10 million to help ease the impact of oil
development in Williston and Dickinson.
The presidents of Williston State College and Dickinson State
University say the oil boom in western North Dakota is making it
tougher to find and keep employees.
They say student housing is short and there are some security
concerns because of the influx of new workers.
The Legislature will have to decide whether to provide the
money. Williston State President Ray Nadolny says it would be “a
great start” for easing the campus impacts of oil development. He
says he’d like to see more campus housing.
Dickinson State President D.C. Coston says the money could help
raise wages and provide security improvements.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of
Fargo is being installed this week as the archbishop of the Denver
Archdiocese.
The ceremony for the Most Rev. Samuel Aquila (ah-KWIHL’-ah) is
Wednesday afternoon at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate
Conception in Denver.
The Vatican announced Aquila’s new position in May. He gave his
farewell Mass in Fargo on June 24.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An analyst says North Dakota should try
harder to recruit women to run for state offices and the
Legislature, and to serve on state boards and commissions.
Linda Wurtz says North Dakota would get economic and public
policy benefits from having women in a more prominent role.
Wurtz wrote a report on the status of women for the North Dakota
Women’s Network. It says North Dakota has only one female elected
statewide official. Only about 15 percent of legislators are women.
Wurtz says there’s already a state law that requires more gender
balance on state boards and commissions, and it should be taken
more seriously. She says at least one woman should be on every
“short list” for an appointment.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Officials are expecting a higher-than-normal
turnout at this year’s North Dakota State Fair, after flooding
forced the cancellation of last year’s event.
Fair General Manager Renae Korslien (KOHRZ’-leen) tells The
Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/NCUR7x ) that the off year has
increased the anticipation for this year’s fair, which starts
Friday at the fairgrounds in Minot and runs through July 28. The
fair has added more than 200 camping spots to keep up with extra
demand this year.
Korslien says all 180 acres of the fairgrounds have been cleaned
and fixed up after last year’s historic Souris River flood.
The fair typically attracts about 300,000 people.
