BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Future North Dakota college students will have to meet tougher entrance requirements.
The state Board of Higher Education on Wednesday approved the more stringent standards.

Chancellor Ham Shirvani says they will take full effect for students who enroll in 2015.

They won’t apply to students who are in college now.
The plan will use a formula to decide whether a student is
eligible to go to a North Dakota college.

It will use high school grades, course work and ACT test scores. North Dakota resident students will get a small bonus.

Board members approved the changes unanimously.
Some students at Minot State University protested the change.
They say some elements of the plan will raise tuition costs for
Canadian students, and they may enroll elsewhere.
