Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is hosting a Widow’s Retreat September 19th -21st at Maryvale Retreat Center in Valley City, ND. The weekend will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19th and concludes after a brunch on Sunday, September 21st. The cost of the retreat is $125.00 and includes 2 nights lodging in a private room, 5 meals and all supplies.

In Genevieve Davis Ginsburg’s book, Widow to Widow, she states “Widowhood is a club no one elects to join.… Only another widow knows what it feels like to become a widow. … Most widows are comforted and reassured when they can connect with others in the same human struggle.” These quotes describe the theme of the JAGST Widow’s Retreat. Women who have experienced the death of their husbands deal with many emotions, challenges and struggles as they grieve their loss. Although no one can take these struggles away and even though every widow’s experience is unique, spending time with others who have had a similar experience can often help in the journey of grief.

This retreat is an opportunity for widows to immerse themselves in healing with no distractions in a relaxing, supportive and positively charged atmosphere with others who have experienced the loss of a husband.   Participants will learn coping skills and about resources that may help during the grieving process.

The weekend will include special guest speakers, Tracy Johnk, Social Worker at Jamestown Regional Medical Center and Grief Recovery Specialist, Jeanne Putnam from Wahpeton, ND. The weekend will also include a panel of Jamestown Area Grief Support Team members who are widows; time for personal sharing and discussion; a Service of Remembrance and workshops on journaling, self-nurturing/pampering and understanding the grief journey. There will be time for informal interaction among those attending and time for private reflection while walking the beautiful Maryvale grounds.

For a brochure and registration form, please call Eileen at 701-251-1280 and leave a message that includes your name and mailing address. Registrations are due by August 25th and space is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first- serve basis. For more information, please call Carol at 701-320-3801 or Kathy at 701-952-8001 or 701-659-8001

ANTLER, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials Wednesday afternoon temporarily closed the border station at Antler because of a propane leak.

The Antler port of entry is located north of Minot on U.S Highway 256 and Canada Highway 256. It is normally open seven days a week.

Authorities say travelers should take an alternate route into Canada, either at the Sherwood port to the west or the Westhope port to the east.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Federal and state investigators are at a Williston oil supply and logistics company where a massive fire erupted and disrupted road and air traffic.

Williams County Emergency Services spokeswoman Lorrie Wilson said officials with the state fire marshal’s office and the federal Environmental Protection Agency were at Red River Supply on early Wednesday.

She said it’s uncertain when they’ll determine the cause of the blaze that started midnight Monday and sent fireballs hundreds of feet into the air. The fire has since been extinguished.

No one was hurt but people within a half-mile area were urged to leave. Wilson said some did but most stayed.

State records show several flammable chemicals were on the property. The state Health Department and other agencies had monitored air quality in the area.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say they’re encouraged by proposed rules for rail tank cars that carry crude oil.

Sen. John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer say the issue of rail safety is important, though they also want commonsense rules that are workable. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp adds that it takes a comprehensive approach that includes government and industry in the discussion.

U.S. regulators are proposing to phase out thousands of older rail tank cars that carry crude. It’s the government’s response to a series of fiery train crashes over the past year, including one at Casselton in December that left an ominous cloud over the town and led some residents to evacuate.

Casselton Mayor Lee Anderson says anything that will make oil shipments safer is welcome news.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal grant is aimed at strengthening businesses and creating jobs in Indian Country in North Dakota.

The state’s congressional delegation says the U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving a $175,000 grant to the Coalition of Indian Housing Authorities of North Dakota.

The funds from USDA’s Rural Business Enterprise Grant program will be used to establish a revolving loan fund for small and emerging businesses that benefit Native Americans living on or near reservations in North Dakota.

The money is part of $2.7 million awarded in 19 states.

In world and national news…

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – There is no sign of a letup in fighting between Israel and Hamas, even though Secretary of State John Kerry is speaking of progress toward a cease-fire. The head of Hamas Wednesday called for the opening of Gaza’s borders, and the end of a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt on the Gaza Strip more than seven years ago. He said Hamas can’t abandon those terms in a cease-fire agreement.

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands (AP) – On a day in which the first remains of the victims of last week’s shootdown of a Malaysia Airlines jet over Ukraine were flown back to the Netherlands, two more aircraft have been shot down over eastern Ukraine. Rebels Wednesday hit a pair of Ukrainian fighter jets. It happened about 20 miles south of the site of the Malaysia Airlines wreckage.

FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) – Arizona’s highest court is allowing the execution of a condemned inmate to proceed after considering a last-minute appeal that put his lethal injection on hold. Lawyers for Joseph Wood claimed that he received inadequate legal representation at his sentencing. They also challenged the secrecy of the lethal injection drugs. The planned execution is occurring amid new scrutiny nationwide over lethal injections after several controversial executions.

NEW YORK (AP) – The head of the government lab that potentially exposed workers to live anthrax has resigned. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Michael Farrell submitted his resignation yesterday. He’d been the head of the CDC lab since 2009, but was reassigned after an incident last month at an Atlanta lab that handles bioterrorism agents. The lab didn’t completely kill anthrax samples before sending them to two other labs that had fewer safeguards.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Manhattan district attorney says six people have been indicted in an international ring that managed to take over the accounts of more than 1,000 StubHub users accounts. The accounts were then used to fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game, the U.S. Open and Broadway shows. According to the D-A, the thieves would then re-sell the tickets. He says the scheme was the work of a “global network of hackers, identity thieves and money-launderers.”
