Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is hosting a Widow’s Retreat September 19th -21st at Maryvale Retreat Center in Valley City, ND. The weekend will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19th and concludes after a brunch on Sunday, September 21st. The cost of the retreat is $125.00 and includes 2 nights lodging in a private room, 5 meals and all supplies.

In Genevieve Davis Ginsburg’s book, Widow to Widow, she states “Widowhood is a club no one elects to join.… Only another widow knows what it feels like to become a widow. … Most widows are comforted and reassured when they can connect with others in the same human struggle.” These quotes describe the theme of the JAGST Widow’s Retreat. Women who have experienced the death of their husbands deal with many emotions, challenges and struggles as they grieve their loss. Although no one can take these struggles away and even though every widow’s experience is unique, spending time with others who have had a similar experience can often help in the journey of grief.

This retreat is an opportunity for widows to immerse themselves in healing with no distractions in a relaxing, supportive and positively charged atmosphere with others who have experienced the loss of a husband.

Participants will learn coping skills and about resources that may help during the grieving process.

The weekend will include special guest speakers, Tracy Johnk, Social Worker at Jamestown Regional Medical Center and Grief Recovery Specialist, Jeanne Putnam from Wahpeton, ND. The weekend will also include a panel of Jamestown Area Grief Support Team members who are widows; time for personal sharing and discussion; a Service of Remembrance and workshops on journaling, self-nurturing/pampering and understanding the grief journey. There will be time for informal interaction among those attending and time for private reflection while walking the beautiful Maryvale grounds.

For a brochure and registration form, please call Eileen at 701-251-1280 and leave a message that includes your name and mailing address. Registrations are due by August 25th and space is limited.  WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston man accused of tying nooses around the necks of his ex-wife and his son and pulling them behind an SUV has pleaded guilty to terrorizing and reckless endangerment.

Isaac Gould was accused of tying nooses around his family members’ necks in July 2013. At a court hearing Tuesday, Gould’s defense attorney said he admitted the charges as described by prosecutors.

Gould pleaded guilty to charges involving his wife as part of a plea agreement that would drop the same charges involving his son. Judge David Nelson said he will review the results of a presentence investigation and decide whether to accept the agreement.

The terms of the deal call for Gould to be sentenced to serve eight years in prison, with credit for time already served.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police arrested a woman who allegedly became drunk and unruly on a flight into Hector International Airport.

The  35-year-old Fargo woman was taken to jail late Wednesday on a charge of resisting arrest. Formal charges were not immediately filed.

Authorities allege the woman assaulted a flight attendant and was combative with police officers. The FBI is investigating.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The manager of the Bismarck airport and federal officials say they’re investigating the report of a man who says he was allowed to board a plane to Denver with someone else’s ticket.

Mick Turner, of Bismarck, says  he received the wrong boarding pass when he checked in for the July 10 flight, and then made it past the security checkpoint and onto the plane.

Turner says he didn’t realize he had the wrong boarding pass until he got to his seat. He told a flight attendant about the mistake and was asked to leave the plane.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lorie Dankers says TSA is reviewing the allegations. Airport manager Greg Haug calls the incident a “legitimate concern.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man who has been questioned in an alleged murder-for-hire scheme in Spokane, Washington, has won his fight for evidence to be used against him in a separate illegal weapons case.

James Henrikson was arrested for being a felon in possession of firearms after investigators found guns in a safe in his Watford City home. His lawyer argued that the warrant did not authorize police to contact the safe manufacturer for the combination of the safe and the evidence should be excluded.

Henrikson requested a new attorney and asked a judge to withdraw the motion to suppress evidence. The motion was granted.

Henrikson did business in the North Dakota’s oil patch with Doug Carlile, who was shot and killed by an intruder in his Spokane home in December.

ANTLER, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have reopened the border station at Antler.

The facility had been temporarily closed Wednesday after a propane leak was discovered. The building was declared to be safe after an inspection by a propane service provider.

The Antler port of entry is located north of Minot on U.S Highway 256 and Canada Highway 256. It is normally open seven days a week.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – An emergency manager says this week’s fire at a Williston oil field supply company likely burned dozens of different chemicals that were stored there. Williams County Emergency Manager Mike Hallesy says the fire at Red River Supply will need to be fully extinguished before investigators can determine what caused it.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say they’re encouraged by proposed rules for rail tank cars that carry crude oil.

Sen. John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer say the issue of rail safety is important, though they also want commonsense rules that are workable. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp adds that it takes a comprehensive approach that includes government and industry in the discussion.

U.S. regulators are proposing to phase out thousands of older rail tank cars that carry crude. It’s the government’s response to a series of fiery train crashes over the past year, including one at Casselton in December that left an ominous cloud over the town and led some residents to evacuate.

Casselton Mayor Lee Anderson says anything that will make oil shipments safer is welcome news.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Mayor Dennis Johnson says Devils Lake is opposed to a proposal by BNSF Railway to allow increased train speeds on a section of track in the city.

BNSF is planning to double the current 30 mph limit on a nearly mile-and-a-half-long section of track, starting next month. The mayor says the city believes that will create a safety risk.

BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth says the section of track is rated for the higher speed. And she says it doesn’t necessarily mean that all trains will be traveling that fast.

McBeth says the railroad is always looking for ways to improve the efficiency of its trains.

The City Commission plans a special meeting on Monday with railroad officials.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Eight projects are getting a total of nearly $285,000 in funding this quarter from the North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission.

The group funds developers of North Dakota farm products. It’s a program of the state Commerce Department.

The largest grant this quarter is going to North Dakota State University’s Department of Veterinary and Microbiology Sciences, which is getting about $76,000 to defray costs of a program aimed at preventing illness from the transmission of bacteria to food processing equipment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal officials and conservationists say a recent report detailing annual wetland losses in the five-state Prairie Pothole Region highlights the need for increased protection for birds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report shows the wetlands in the region declined by an average of 6,200 acres per year. And some conservationists say the trend isn’t slowing down.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Twins have designated right-hander Matt Guerrier for assignment and will recall right-hander Ryan Pressly from Triple-A Rochester to take his place in the bullpen. NBA…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The summer of LeBron has quickly turned into the summer of Love.  The Minnesota Timberwolves are weighing their options when it comes to trading All-Star Kevin Love. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls both trying to land the versatile forward. Any talks are complicated by a league rule that requires a 30-day waiting period to trade any rookie that signs his contract.

DALLAS (AP) – The Dallas Mavericks have voided the contract of Rashard Lewis because the free agent forward needs surgery on his right knee. President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson says the team discovered the need for surgery during a physical. Lewis had signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $1.4 million.
The 34-year-old Lewis spent the past two seasons mostly coming off the bench in Miami. He was expected to back up Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT’-skee) at power forward.

NFL…

DENVER (AP) – Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is giving up control of the team to deal with Alzheimer’s disease. The team has announced that the 70-year-old will no longer be a part of the team’s daily operations. Team president Joe Ellis will take over after being named the Broncos’ chief executive officer.

After acknowledging in 2009 that he suffered short-term memory loss, he stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2011 when he promoted Ellis to president.

The Broncos say the ownership of the team is held in a trust and the hope is that one of Bowlen’s children will run the team one day.

Under Bowlen’s guidance, the Broncos made six Super Bowl appearances.

TOUR…

Update…

ARGELES-GAZOST, France (AP) – Vincenzo Nibali has won the 18th stage of the Tour de France, emphatically stamping his dominance on the race in its last mountain leg with a solo breakaway on the day’s last climb.

After setting off from Pau, riders tackled the famed Tourmalet pass – the highest Pyrenean peak on the Tour – before heading up to Hautacam ski station at the end of the 145.5-kilometer (90-mile) leg. Both climbs are among the toughest in professional cycling.

The Italian, winning his fourth stage of the Tour, essentially turned the race into a competition for second.

Alejandro Valverde of Spain, who began the day in second but with a thin lead on two Frenchmen behind him, was losing key seconds.

The race’s last big challenge is Saturday’s time trial.

PLA D’ADET, France (AP) – Race leader Vinzenzo Nibali of Italy gained key seconds during the 17th stage of the Tour de France to pad his lead. The winner of the race was Poland’s Rafal Majka, who took the lead with a late breakaway on the last of four tough climbs in the Pyrenees (PIHR’-eh-nees).

The 17th stage covered around 77 miles and was the shortest stage in this year’s Tour.

In world and national news….

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) – A plane carrying 116 people is missing over northwestern Africa. The private Spanish airline that owns the plane says it disappeared from radar during a flight from Burkina Faso to Algeria. The flight had been missing for hours before the news was made public. Between Burkina Faso and Algeria is Mali, where unrest continues in the north.

HILVERSUM, Netherlands (AP) – Twenty-five forensic experts and dozens of support staff are now working to identify the remains of victims from the Malaysia Airlines plane that was shot down over eastern Ukraine last week. The work began in the Netherlands late yesterday, after the remains of 40 victims arrived from Ukraine. Two more military aircraft with additional remains left Ukraine today.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – Gaza police and health officials say six members of a family and an 18-month-old boy have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a refugee camp. The number of dead from 16 days of fighting now stands at 736 Palestinians and 32 Israeli soldiers, along with three civilians in Israel. Hamas militants are sticking to their demand for the lifting of an Israeli and Egyptian blockade of Gaza.

BAGHDAD (AP) – Iraq’s parliament has chosen a moderate Kurdish politician, Fouad Massoum, as the country’s new president. Massoum is known for keeping good relations with Sunni and Shiite Arab politicians. The vote for president — a largely ceremonial post — was delayed for a day when the Kurdish bloc requested more time to select a candidate. Under an unofficial agreement dating back to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, Iraq’s presidency is held by a Kurd while the prime minister is Shiite and the parliamentary speaker is Sunni.

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after a video surfaced of another officer using an apparent chokehold on a suspect during an arrest. Police say the July 14 incident happened at a subway station in East Harlem, where a man was arrested on a fare-evading charge after walking through an emergency gate without paying. It happened three days before another man, Eric Garner, died in police custody after an officer apparently placed him in a chokehold. That officer has been placed on modified assignment. Garner’s funeral was held yesterday.
