Joseph M. Albrecht, Sr., 87, of Courtenay, ND, died Friday, August 22, 2014, under hospice care surrounded by his family.

Joseph Albrecht was born on March 12, 1927, at home on Moonshine Trail near Fried, ND, the son of Martin J. and Amelia Rose (Nowatzek) Albrecht. He helped on the family farm and attended Gray and Ashland Township schools, graduating from the eighth grade. He married Grace Altringer on October 3, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Joe continued to work on the farm and later drove cab in Jamestown for some time. He worked for Railway Express Agency for 20 years before he began his career as a rural mail carrier in the late 1960’s. Grace died on October 3, 2002 and Joe retired from the US Postal Service in 2008.

Joe’s favorite past times were hunting, visiting family and friends, and touring the country side. “Smokin’ Joe” won many trap shooting tournaments and was a member of the Buffalo City Gun Club and ND Gun Collectors’ Association, the Barnes County Trap Club, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was also a member of the Eagles and Elks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Terrence; brother, Richard; and sister, Rosemary.

Joe was survived by Joe & Nancy Albrecht, Lincoln, ND, Nancy Albrecht, Jamestown, Michael Albrecht, Billings, MT, Tony & Linda Albrecht, Courtenay, ND, Barbara & Anthony Clemens, Jamestown, Mark & Amy Albrecht, North Charleston, SC, and Lynn & Jerome Zimmerman, Spiritwood, ND; 23, grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.

 

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Rev. Erik Weber officiating.

Visitation: 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Interment: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
