Jamestown (CSi) With a slight drizzle, but no heavy rain Thursday evening, a large crow estimated in the hundres gathered in downtown Jamestown for the annual Block Party.

Neither the threat of rain, or the University of Jamestown Jimmies playing at 7-p.m., at VCSU could hold down the crowd (See sports for the game results),

About 100 booths consisting of businesses, churches and other organizations welcomed students and residents.

Each year the the Block Party welcomes University of Jamestown freshmen to town and allows them to network with the community.

The freshmen are required by the university to attend, however many upper class students participate as well.

Co-Chairs and organizers of the Block Party are University of Jamestown Dean of Students, Gary Van Zinderen, and Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, Excutive Lisa Hicks.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says its officers will be out in force during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
 
     The agency is planning extra patrols, some of them focusing on alcohol violations, along with sobriety checkpoints in Burke, Cass, Ward and Williams counties. Troopers statewide will be working overtime hours.
 
     The Patrol says the goal is to enhance safety.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office had received a $20,000 grant from the North Dakota Department of Transportation to cover overtime pay for deputies to patrol area roads and highways over the Labor Day weekend.

 

 MAX, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a Bismarck man who died after rear-ending a payloader on U.S. Highway 83.
 
     Police say 55-year-old Roger Steckler died Wednesday afternoon in the crash near Max.
 
     Authorities say Steckler was driving a van that rear-ended the payloader, which was traveling about 20 mph. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
     The driver of the payloader was taken to a Minot hospital with unspecified injuries.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Texas man who pleaded guilty to distributing chemicals that resulted in the synthetic drug deaths of two teens in the Grand Forks, North Dakota, area has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison.
 
     Charles Carlton, of Katy, Texas, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Fargo.
 
     Carlton pleaded guilty in March to three counts, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.
 
     Authorities say the chemicals sold by Carlton’s company, Motion Resources LLC, were manufactured into hallucinogens. They say they wound up in the hands of 18-year-old Christian Bjerk, of Grand Forks, and 17-year-old Elijah Stai, of Park Rapids, Minnesota.
 
     They died within a week of each other in June 2012.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Probation for a man charged in a brutal beating on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has been revoked after authorities say he had contact with the victim on social media.
 
     Ryan Thunderhawk, of Fort Yates, is charged in federal court with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
 
     Witnesses say the victim was knocked unconscious three separate times in the July 6 attack. The woman suffered a broken nose and several facial fractures.
 
     Authorities say Thunderhawk violated two terms of his parole. Court documents show he admitted to sending messages to the victim on Facebook, and he was discovered with synthetic marijuana in his possession.
 
     Thunderhawk was ordered to be held in jail. Trial is set for Oct. 28.

 

 BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – A judge will decide if statements made to FBI agents by a Colorado man accused of murder in Montana’s oil patch should be suppressed because the defendant is mentally disabled.
 
     Judge Richard Simonton on Thursday scheduled an October 1st hearing in Glendive in the case of 25-year-old defendant Michael Keith Spell of Parachute, Colorado.
 
     Spell is accused of killing 43-year-old Sherry Arnold during an attempted abduction as the high school teacher and mother of two was jogging in Sidney in January 2012. Her body was found more than two months later in North Dakota.
 
     Richland County prosecutors dropped their pursuit of the death penalty for Spell after experts testified he has a mild mental disability.
 
     Accomplice Lester Van Waters Junior has pleaded guilty to deliberate homicide by accountability in a deal with prosecutors.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation are criticizing Canadian Pacific Railway, saying it’s forcing grain elevators to cancel backlogged orders as it implements a new shipping system.
 
     U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) sent a letter to CEO E. Hunter Harrison on Thursday. The Democratic senator says last week the railway reported being behind somewhere from 200 to 2,000 cars. The senator says the company reports being behind around 50 cars this week.
 
     She says Canadian Pacific is making grain elevators cancel most of their open orders, not fulfilling more requests.
 
     Heitkamp says the cancelled orders are leaving large quantities to sit on roadsides.
 
     Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer also says he has heard similar reports. Cramer says he will not “tolerate bullying” of the state’s agricultural industry.

 

  RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – Airman from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota who fly and work on B-52 bombers say they’ve learned a lot from their counterparts at Ellsworth Air Force Base who fly B-1 bombers. Eight B-52s and about 300 airmen from Minot have been based at Ellsworth this summer. A $67 million runway upgrade at Minot is expected to wrap up by the end of September.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – More than half a million bee colonies have been registered in North Dakota this year, a record for the state.
 
     State and industry officials credit more beekeepers, a better attempt to register colonies and a unique effort to help beekeepers and landowners live in harmony.
 
     Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says 221 beekeepers have registered 510,000 colonies this year, compared to 205 beekeepers registering 482,500 colonies last year. More than 12,200 hive locations have been registered, compared to 11,000 last year.
 
     Goehring says that at the same time, his office is getting fewer landowner complaints about bee colonies.
 
     North Dakota last year became the first state to develop a formal plan to help beekeepers and landowners resolve differences. North Dakota Beekeepers Association President Will Nissen says he thinks it’s working.

 

 BOWMAN, N.D. (AP) – Officials are starting construction on a $28 million hospital and clinic in the southwestern North Dakota town of Bowman. The current Southwest Healthcare Services facilities were built in the 1950s. The new 60,000-square-foot structure will more than double the size of the existing hospital and clinic by late 2016.

Valley City (CSi)  At  Shelly Ellig Field, Thursday evening, the VCSU Vikings defeated the Jamestown Jimmies in the season opener for both teams 31-7.  The Vikings won back the Paint Bucket, with the win. 

Vikings quarterback Kurtis Walls threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns.

Freshmen receiver, Antoine Griffin, netted158 yards and two touchdowns.

Vikings’ linebackers had two interceptions.

Up next VCSU  hosts the third ranked team in the country, Morningside, on September 6th.

Also that day the Jimmies are home versus NCAA Division III’s Concordia College.

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State’s quest for a record four straight Football Championship Subdivision titles will be built around a defense that returns six starters.
 
     The Bison bring back strong safety Colton Heagle, who is a nominee for the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive player in FCS.
 
     Last year’s team leaders in tackles, sacks and interceptions are back, too. NDSU also has running back John Crockett and wide receiver Zach Vraa, who set a school record last year with 15 touchdown receptions.
 
     There are holes to fill. The Bison lost its quarterback, four starters on the offensive line and three starters on the defensive line.
 
     NDSU head coach Chris Klieman (KLY’-min) says the newcomers have looked good in practice but isn’t sure how they’ll respond Saturday at Iowa State.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo-based sporting goods company has pledged a million dollars to Minnesota State University-Moorhead in exchange for the naming rights of its football field.
 
  Scheels All Sports has promised to donate the money in hopes of putting artificial turf on the Dragons’ stadium.
 
     Incoming university President Anne Blackhurst is running 50 laps around the school in honor of her first year.
 
     Scheels’ CEO Steve Scheel says he will donate $20,000 to the school for every lap Blackhurst completes up to 50.
 
     Blackhurst herself is donating $1,000 to school scholarships for every lap she completes.
 
     The university will rename its field to Scheels Field.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Former Bismarck High and University of North Dakota standout wide receiver Weston Dressler has re-signed with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.
 
     The Roughriders released Dressler early this year to give him the opportunity to sign with an NFL team, but it didn’t work out. The Kansas City Chiefs released Dressler on Monday.
 
     Dressler has played six seasons with the Roughriders, topping the 1,000-yard receiving mark five times and being named a CFL All-Star twice. He also was the CFL’s rookie of the year in 2008 and won a Grey Cup championship with the team last year.
 
     Dressler is third in franchise history with 442 receptions and 6,536 yards.
 
     Terms of his latest contract with the team were not released.

Teddy Bridgewater threw a touchdown in his first NFL start.  The Vikings defense had three sacks in a game where both coaches protected their starters by keeping them safely on the sidelines.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Blake Jurich threw three touchdown passes, ran for another score and San Jose State beat North Dakota 42-10 on Thursday night.
 
     Jurich was 22 of 25 for 250 yards and connected with Tyler Winston on two touchdown passes. Winston had 10 receptions for 96 yards and Thomas Tucker gained 81 yards rushing on 20 carries.
 
     North Dakota was held to 244 yards of total offense and turned the ball over two times. Freshman Reid Taubenheim kicked a 42-yard field goal with 1:53 left in the first half and Jer Garman scored on a 7-yard run with 1:17 left in the game.
 
     San Jose State led 21-3 at halftime and scored the next 21 points.

 

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Mitch Leidner ran for two scores and threw a touchdown pass to Donovahn Jones to lead Minnesota to a season-opening 42-20 victory over Eastern Illinois last night. Leidner finished 9 for 17 with 144 yards. Jalen Whitlow went 14 for 23 passing for 110 yards and rushed 19 times for 77 yards.

 

 ATLANTA (AP) – Bo Wallace threw four TD passes in a sloppy season opener, and No. 18 Mississippi pulled away to beat Boise State 35-13 in another Top-25 game last night. Ole Miss led only 7-6 entering the fourth quarter before finishing off Boise State when Wallace threw for TDs on three consecutive throws, ruining the debut of new Broncos coach Bryan Harsin.

  PHOENIX (AP) – The Minnesota Lynx will face the Phoenix Mercury in what could be considered a dream matchup in the WNBA’s Western Conference finals. The series will feature the WNBA’s top two teams. It also will be the third meeting in four years in the West finals between these two budding rivals.

 

TENNIS…

  NEW YORK (AP) – Top seeded Serena Williams is through to the third round at the U.S. Open after easily beating Vania King 6-1, 6-love. It took Williams just 56 minutes to run her winning streak in the tournament to 16.
 
     Eighth-seeded Ana Ivanovic (ee-VAH’-noh-vich) is the biggest name to lose on day four. She’s out after being knocked off by Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-4 in the second round.
 
     – CiCi Bellis, the first 15-year-old since 1996 to win a U.S. Open match, could not follow that up with another victory, losing in the second round. Bellis, a Californian who is ranked 1,208th and playing in her first tour-level event, won seven games in a row during one stretch but wound up getting beaten 6-3, love-6, 6-2 by 48th-ranked Zarina Diyas.
 
     Top men’s seed Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) also had an easy time winning his second round match. He rolled to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-love, rout of Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.  Next up for Djokovic is American Sam Querrey.  Joining the second round winner is 13th seed John Isner.  He pounded out 30 aces and 54 winners in his straight-set victory.
 
     Eighth-seed Andy Murray moved easily into the third round with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matthias Bachinger.

John Isner (IHZ’-nur), the highest-ranking American male player at the U.S. Open, will next play a third round in a match against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber (FEE’-lihp KOHL’-shry-bur). The 13th-seeded Isner hit 30 aces and saved the only break point he faced in a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2 victory over 77th-ranked Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany yesterday at Flushing Meadows.

     CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)- Tony Stewart is returning to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway. That will end a three-week self-imposed break from NASCAR after the three-time NASCAR champion’s car hit Kevin Ward Jr. at an Aug. 9 dirt car race in New York.

 UNDATED (AP) – Acknowledging he “didn’t get it right” with a two-game suspension for Ravens running back Ray Rice, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) has announced tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence. The new sanctions include a six-week suspension for a first offense and at least a year for a second.

 DAKAR, Senegal (AP) – The World Health Organization is warning of a worsening crisis over the spread of Ebola in West Africa. The U.N. health agency said more than 500 cases were recorded over the past week, by far the worst toll of any week so far. The vast majority of the cases were in Liberia, but the agency said it was also the highest number of cases in one week for Guinea and Sierra Leone. The outbreak has killed more than half of the 3,000 people it has sickened.
 
     GENEVA (AP) – The U.N. human rights office says reports from a 34-member U.N. monitoring mission in Ukraine, show both sides committing a range of abuses targeting civilians trapped in urban areas or trying to flee through so-called safe corridors. Officials say around three dozen people a day are being killed in eastern Ukraine and the death toll has risen to at least 2,220.
 
     JERUSALEM (AP) – Israeli forensic investigators on Friday identified A recently discovered body in Israel has been identified by forensic experts as that of seminary student Aharon Sofer. Sofer disappeared while hiking in Jerusalem last week. Authorities say, however, that there is no evidence of foul play.
 
     REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) – Icelandic authorities say no volcanic ash has been detected by they are raising the aviation warning code to red after a small fissure eruption near a volcano that lies under a large glacier. The event was described as being not highly explosive – and thus not producing much of the fine ash that can affect aircraft engines.
 
     BERLIN (AP) – Police say a leftist group is claiming responsibility for an arson attack on Berlin’s subway system that is causing delays for thousands of commuters. Police spokesman Klaus Schubert says an anonymous online message from the group claims it set fire to a power-cable shaft to call attention to the conditions of illegal refugees in Germany.
