CASSELTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 69-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a train in Casselton.

He has been identified as Eugene Kaatz, of Casselton.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon (Oct 13,2012) at a crossing on state Highway 18, or Langer Avenue.

Witnesses say a westbound train had cleared the intersection when Kaatz began to cross the tracks while the crossing gates were down. He was struck by an eastbound train.

Authorities say the engineer of the train had sounded his horn to warn the pedestrian.
