Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) – The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon, (Oct 12,2012) reminded county residents that the burn restriction remains in place.

Outdoor burning is not allowed in the county whenever the Fire Danger Index is in the Very High and Extreme categories.

The fine for burning during the burn restriction is up to $1000.

Fire Danger Index information can be found at StutsmanCounty.org or by calling the Stutsman County Dispatch Center at 701-252-1000.

On Saturday afternoon, (Oct 13, 2012) about 3-p.m., the Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called to a a slough west of Cavendish Farms, east of Jamestown, where about 10 acres of cattails were on fire.

Rural firefighters were on the scene about 90- minutes.

The Rural Fire Department went out about 7 p.m. Sunday.

No details were immediately available.

With the strong wind and dry conditions, the Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called out to a grass fire Friday afternoon about 1:30-p.m, (Oct 12, 2012) east of Buchanan.

The fire started in a ditch, spread for about half a mile with the likely cause a discarded cigarette.

There was no major property damage reported.

About 2:15 –p.m., Friday, the Kensal Fire Department was call to a corn field fire southwest of Kensal, 3 to 4 miles northwest of the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters.

Later Friday, he Jamestown Rural Fire Department was dispatched again to a report of a fire south of Eldridge, about 5:45 p.m. in a field about one-quarter of a mile south of the Eldridge I-94 Exit, about five miles west of Jamestown.

The property owners had the fire contained, and the call was cancelled.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Jamestown Police report a railroad crossing arm was struck about 11:30 a.m. on Friday (Oct 12, 2012) at 3rd Street, Southeast, in Jamestown.

Police on the scene said a vehicle struck the crossing arm on the south side of the crossing, as it was heading east on 3rd street.

No vehicle was at the scene when police arrived.

Damage was confined to knocking the arm loose from the unit, and some dangling wires.

A BNSF worker was getting material to reattach the arm.

The crossing arms at that location have been hit a few times over the past few months, with the installation of the median as part of the railroad Quiet Zone

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) —  On Friday’s (Oct 12, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, James River Humane Socity President, Jennifer Barnard, said October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, as all dogs over the age of one year can be adopted at a discount of $75.

Ms. Barnard said, for the first time in a few years, the Humane Society has to increase the cost of the adoption fee, for dogs and cats, from $100 to $135, effective, November 1, 2012.

She pointed out that the increase is necessary to support the costs of operating the shelter.

All animals are spayed or neutered, with all shots given.

Fundraisers coming up include, October 27, 2012, Taco in a Bag will be sold at the Buffalo Mall from 11-a.m., to 2-p.m., for $5 including a beverage, with items donated by local businesses.

Cookbooks will be sold for the holidays, beginning in November, at a cost of a $20 donation to the shelter, which Ms. Barnard says make great Christmas gifts.

She added that individuals recycling beverage cans at Gerdau Ameristeel in Jamestown may designate the money received to the James River Humane Society.

The recycler is at 1510 10th Street Southeast in Jamestown, open Monday through Friday from 8-a.m., to 5-p.m.

She noted that the Lloyd’s Motors fundraiser is now through November this year, with a portion of sales donated to the shelter.

She points out that the Festival of Trees is such a wonderful way to get you in the Christmas spirit!

The money raised this year is going towards furthering the development of new programs within Mercy Hospital and aiding the funding of equipment that is in need of replacement or upgrading.

She adds, this event is one of the greatest ways that Mercy Healthcare Foundation gives back to our community.

 

 LITCHVILLE, N.D. (AP Oct 15, 2012) – A weekend tractor fire in southeastern North Dakota’s Barnes County killed an 87-year-old rural Litchville man.
Sheriff Randy McClaflin says,Wesley Ten Pas was burning a slough Saturday when the flames grew out of control and burned the tractor he was driving.

     Ten Pas was taken to a Minneapolis burn hospital, where he died.

 

CASSELTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 69-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a train in Casselton.

He has been identified as Eugene Kaatz, of Casselton.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon (Oct 13,2012) at a crossing on state Highway 18, or Langer Avenue.

Witnesses say a westbound train had cleared the intersection when Kaatz began to cross the tracks while the crossing gates were down. He was struck by an eastbound train.

Authorities say the engineer of the train had sounded his horn to warn the pedestrian.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Police say a Bismarck man has been
arrested for stealing from the sub shop where he worked.
     The 42-year-old man was reportedly identified from the
restaurant’s video surveillance tape, which showed him stealing a
safe, as well as money from the cash register.
     The burglary happened between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Saturday at a
Quiznos restaurant. A store manager told police that the suspect
was an employee who had closed the store the night before.
     A police spokesman say the investigation cleared up a previous
burglary at the restaurant.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Fargo School District is suing a
contractor for what it calls bad workmanship on the ceilings of the
Trollwood Performing Arts School administration building.
     The suit against Contemporary Builders Inc. seeks more than
$50,000, but the school district’s lawyer says fixing the wood
ceilings could cost as much as $300,000.
     The building is part of the Bluestem Center for the Arts in
neighboring Moorhead, Minn.
     Joe Wetch, the school district attorney,says  the amount of cost for any repairs is “widely in dispute.”
     Randall Bakke, attorney for the contractor, was not available
for comment.
     More than two months ago the Fargo School District took over
operation of the Bluestem Center, following the financial troubles
of the nonprofit fundraising group that had been running the
facility.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Ten neighbors of a North Dakota farmer
who is battling cancer have banded together to harvest his sugar
beets.
     The beets belong to Manvel’s Thomas Ronan, who is recovering
from surgery to treat the cancer. His treatment kept him out of the
field.
     The volunteers harvested about 65 acres of beets with five
harvesters, four roto-beaters and several trucks.
     Donn Knutson, one of Ronan’s neighbors, says the volunteers
jumped at the opportunity to work. He says  “It’s just something you do when a friend needs help.”

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo’s largest hospital has opened up seven
new emergency rooms and another local hospital is planning to
expand its emergency services.
     Sanford Health officials say a $1.7 million expansion and
renovation project has doubled the capacity the emergency center
was designed to handle.
     Officials say the addition has resulted in a more efficient
suite of 27 emergency rooms to better handle almost 60,000 patient
visits a year.
     Sanford’s emergency center is one of the busiest in the
tri-state region, and sees almost twice as many patients as
Sanford’s hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
     Officials at Essentia Health in Fargo say  its 19-room emergency department also is experiencing an increase in visits, and there are plans to
increase the capacity to as many as 35 rooms.

 MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – One of North Dakota’s top t

ourist
destinations in the summer is looking to add some winter fun.
     The city council in the Old West town of Medora has approved an
outdoor ice skating rink that will be built near a downtown hotel.
     Council members say the rink is the first step in making the
western North Dakota town a winter recreational destination.
     The town traditionally closes up at the end of the summer
season, but several shops and restaurants now plan to remain open
year-round.
     Cost of the project is $3,000.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Soybean Council is hosting a
group from the Philippines for a day.
     The guests on Monday are touring a greenhouse, feed mill and
commodity trade room at North Dakota State University, as well as
the Northern Crops Institute.
     The council says the goal is to promote soybeans grown in North
Dakota.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A western North Dakota legislator says the
state’s increased oil production shouldn’t all be exported.

     Dickinson state Rep. Shirley Meyer is supporting a proposed tax
break for oil refining. It would exempt oil from North Dakota’s 6.5
percent extraction tax if the oil is processed at a North Dakota
refinery.
     Meyer says the idea will promote more refinery development. She
says although North Dakota is now the nation’s No. 2 oil producer,
the emphasis is on exporting the oil instead of encouraging
refinery construction here.
     North Dakota is now producing an average of more than 700,000
barrels of oil each day. There’s only one North Dakota refinery –
the Tesoro refinery near Mandan. It can process about 68,000
barrels a day.

 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
 
   SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – David Freese and Carlos Beltran hit two-run
homers to help St. Louis build a six-run lead and go on to a 6-4
win over San Francisco in Game 1 of the NLCS.

St. Louis knocked out Giants starter Madison Bumgarner after just 3 2-3 innings.

San Francisco has yet to win a home game in the post-season.

NEW YORK (AP) – Anibal Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup minus
injured Derek Jeter, and Detroit capitalized on a missed call by an
umpire to beat New York 3-0 for a 2-0 lead in the AL championship
series.
     Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda (hih-ROH’-kee kuh-ROH’-duh)
pitched perfect ball into the sixth inning. But the slumping New
York hitters looked lost a day after Jeter broke his ankle in the
12th inning of a 6-4 loss.
     Sanchez pitched three-hit ball deep into the game.
 
    NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) – Robert Griffin III ran for two touchdowns
and threw for another in the Washington Redskins’ 38-26 win over
the Minnesota Vikings yesterday.

The Redskins snapped an eight-game home losing streak, while the Vikings saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder threw for 352 yards and two TDs.
     
  HOUSTON (AP) – Aaron Rodgers tossed a career-high six touchdown
passes to lead Green Bay to a 42-24 win over Houston to hand the
Texans their first loss of the season.

    WNBA BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS
 
 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Erlana Larkins had 16 points and 15 rebounds
last night as the Indiana Fever topped the Minnesota Lynx 76-70 in
Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.

Tamika Catchings added 20 points for the Fever, who played without leading scorer Katie Douglas. Seimone Augustus scored 23 points for the defending champion Lynx.

 

NFL…

 LANDOVER, Md. (AP) – The Vikings will host a game at London’s
Wembley Stadium next year.

Team vice president Lester Bagley says the details will be worked out at the NFL owners’ meeting tomorrow in Chicago.

The 2013 season marks the first time the NFL will play
two regular-season games in London in the same year.

 

 COLLEGE FOOTBALL-BCS STANDINGS
      UNDATED (AP) – Alabama and Florida are at the top of the
season’s first BCS standings, making it yet another all-SEC top
two, with Oregon and Kansas State close behind the Gators.
     The Crimson Tide in first was no surprise. Alabama is an
overwhelming No. 1 in both polls used in the BCS formula. Florida
in second was less anticipated.

The Gators are No. 3 in the polls,
but rated best by the computer rankings that gave them a slight
edge over Oregon and Kansas State when the numbers were crunched.
Florida’s BCS average is .9092. Oregon’s is .8993 and Kansas
State’s is .8963.
     Notre Dame is fifth and not too far back at .8774.
     Despite the strong showing by the Southeastern Conference,
another all-SEC national championship game is still a long shot.
Oregon’s schedule is back loaded with strong opponents and the
Ducks will likely be able to close the gap in the computers if they
keep winning.
     
     T25-POLL
         UNDATED (AP) – The top five in The Associated Press college
football poll has been rearranged for a second straight week, with
Florida, Kansas State and Notre Dame moving up in the rankings.
     No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon hold the top two spots for a
fourth straight week. The changes came behind them. The Gators move
up one spot to No. 3, and the fourth-ranked Wildcats and
fifth-ranked Fighting Irish both jump two places.
     The shuffling comes after a second straight Saturday in which
multiple top-five teams lost. South Carolina fell 23-21 at LSU on
Saturday night and drops from No. 3 to No. 9.

West Virginia slides from No. 5 to No. 17 after getting routed 49-14 at Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders move into the rankings at 18th.

 

 GOLF-FRYS
    

     SAN MARTIN, Calif. (AP) – Sweden’s Jonas Blixt won the Frys.com
Open for his first PGA Tour title, holing a 4-foot par putt on the
final hole for a one-stroke victory. Blixt became third PGA Tour
rookie to win this season, closing with a 3-under 68 for a 16-under
268 total.
     Tim Petrovic and Jason Kokrak tied for second. Petrovic had a
64, and Kokrak shot a 68.
     Third-round leader John Mallinger failed to earn his first PGA
Tour win in seven years. He shot a had a 72 to tie for fourth.
     
     GOLF-CHAMPIONS TOUR
   

     CONOVER, N.C. (AP) – Fred Funk sank a two-foot putt for birdie
on the final hole to win the Greater Hickory Classic by one shot.
It capped a round of 3-under-par 69 that left him 15-under for the
tournament.
     Duffy Waldorf fired a 66 to grab second place at the Champions
Tour event in North Carolina.
     It’s Funk’s second title of the year and the eighth of his
career on the 50-and-over circuit.

 

 TENNIS-SHANGHAI
          SHANGHAI (AP) – Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak YOH’-koh-vihch) saved
five match points in the second set before outlasting two-time
defending champion Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the final of the
Shanghai Masters. The second-ranked Serb claims his fifth title of
the year and gains a measure of revenge for a five-set loss to the
third-ranked Scotsman in this year’s U.S. Open finale.
    
     TENNIS-LINZ
     

     LINZ, Austria (AP) – Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka
(ah-zah-REN’-kuh) of Belarus won her sixth WTA title of the year,
by beating Germany’s Julia Goerges (GOHR’-gehs) 6-3, 6-4 in the
final of the Generali Ladies in Austria.
     Azarenka has won 13 straight matches without dropping a set
since losing the U.S. Open final last month.
    
     TENNIS-OSAKA
     

     OSAKA, Japan (AP) – Heather Watson became the first British
woman in 24 years to win a WTA title by beating Chang Kai-chen of
Taiwan in the final of the Japan Open.
     Watson outlasted Chang 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 in 3 hours, 11 minutes to
end the long drought for her country. It comes just three weeks
after Laura Robson became the first British woman in 22 years to
even reach a WTA final.

 

In world and national news…

 STOCKHOLM (AP) – Americans Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley are the
winners of the Nobel economics prize.

It’s not technically a Nobel
Prize, because unlike the five other awards it wasn’t established
in the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist also known for
inventing dynamite.

The prize for economics originated in 1968.
     
     CHICAGO (AP) – A quarterly survey by the National Association
for Business Economists predicts the jobless rate next year will be
about 8 percent.

But the economists surveyed have upgraded their
prediction for growth in the housing market.
     
     WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) – The Obama campaign has released a new
TV ad today that features factory workers praising the president’s
record on job creation.

It will air in Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and
Virginia, all key battleground states. Monday will be low-key for
the hopefuls. They’re preparing for tomorrow’s debate.
     
     ISLAMABAD (AP) – A Pakistani girl shot in the head last week by
the Taliban for promoting education for girls is being transported
to Britain for treatment and specialized medical care.

The air ambulance transporting Malala Yousufzai (mah-LAH’-lah
yoo-SOOF’-zeye) has made a stop in the United Arab Emirates, which
donated its use.

In Pakistan, officials say more than 100 Taliban militants have attacked a police station near city of Peshawar (puh-SHAH’-wuhr), killing six officers, including two who were beheaded.
     
     GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) – A U.S. military judge is
considering broad security rules for the war crimes tribunal of
five Guantanamo prisoners charged in 9/11 attacks.

Prosecutors have asked the judge at a pretrial hearing starting today to approve what is known as a protective order that is intended to prevent the
release of classified information during the eventual trial of
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Some relatives of 9/11 victims will be able to view the proceedings from several U.S. military installations.
     
     MIAMI (AP) – Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to reach
hurricane strength in the Atlantic later today.

Rafael’s maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph. The storm is centered about 290 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is moving north-northwest near 10 mph.
