VCFDVALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – The Valley City fire department is actively seeking recruits, for volunteers.

Fire Chief Gary Retterath says people sometimes don’t want to commit because of their families, children and jobs. He says volunteers have to work harder when there is less personnel. He adds that it also takes more time to get the job done.

The fire department averages two calls per week and among the incidents they respond to are structural and grass fires, river rescues and severe floods.

Retterath says he hopes to bring the number of volunteers to at least 40.
