Jim Nelson is accused of punching and breaking the nose of a man at a party in August. He had earlier pleaded guilty to obstructing Fargo police who came to investigate the incident.

KGFO radio officers found the injured man in a parking lot outside an apartment building where the party was held.

Painte is accused of fleeing from deputies during a traffic stop on Oct. 11, as the officers were preparing to arrest him. He eventually was arrested at a relative’s residence after an officer subdued him with a stun gun.

Painte is due in court on Nov. 5 and could enter pleas at that time. His public defender did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – AARP North Dakota says its president has resigned after publicly supporting a measure that would define life as starting at conception.

AARP says in a statement that Roger Wetzel “has become aligned with one side of the issue.”

The proposed constitutional amendment would provide for the “inalienable right to life” at “any stage of development.”

AARP says it’s a nonpartisan organization and has not taken a position on any of the eight ballot measures to be decided by North Dakota voters on Nov. 4.

A telephone number listed for Wetzel is disconnected.

Wetzel issued a statement on ND Choose Life’s website. Wetzel says he quit AARP “to devote more time to advocating for the passage” of the measure.

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) – A climatologist with the National Drought Mitigation Center says some corn fields in the Dakotas might not be harvested until spring.

Brian Fuchs says the cool, wet growing season has created concerns about the moisture content of the corn. He says some farmers might leave corn standing in the field through the winter so it dries properly.

The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan reports a similar situation occurred in the winter of 2008-2009.

The corn harvest in both Dakotas is well behind average. The federal Agriculture Department says only about 12 percent of the South Dakota crop and only about 2 percent of the North Dakota crop is in the bin.

Farmers in the two states are projected to produce more than 1 billion bushels of corn this year.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Police at the Pentagon have shut down a building entrance and a portion of a parking lot. This, after a woman became sick there and told emergency personnel that she had recently been to West Africa. Authorities in Arlington County, Virginia, responded with a HazMat team and treated it as a possible Ebola case. Officials say the woman was taken to a local hospital. An official at the company where the woman works says she has not, in fact, been out of the Washington area.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is reaffirming its opposition to a travel ban that would stop people from coming to the United States from West Africa. Among those now calling for such a ban is Texas Gov. Rick Perry. He also says he has asked President Barack Obama to have Ebola cases sent quickly to facilities that are better able to deal with the disease. A man from West Africa died of Ebola at a Dallas hospital, and two nurses involved in his care became infected.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The World Health Organization is criticizing its own staff, as it admits to mistakes in the handling of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In a draft internal document, the U.N. health agency says the response was marred by incompetency and by an ineffective bureaucracy.

PHOENIX (AP) – Gay marriage has become legal in Arizona. The state’s conservative attorney general says he’s not going to challenge a federal court decision that cleared the way for same-sex unions in the state. The announcement prompted gay couples to line up at the downtown courthouse in Phoenix, where they began to marry immediately.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The debit cards that are used to transmit federal benefits like Social Security to millions of Americans will now have an internal chip, instead of a magnetic strip, to reduce potential for fraud. It’s among the steps announced Friday by President Barack Obama to tighten security for those cards. An estimated 100 million people have been affected by breaches in the past year, at retailers including Target and Home Depot.
