The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the fire, as a smoke alarm alerted other residents who called the fire department.

The fire department’s Ready Squad was called to investigate the smoke, which called the fire units to the scene to further investigate.

Occupants of the building were evacuated as a precaution.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Council’s Public Works committee met Thursday evening at City Hall. Council Member Gumke was not present.

Discussion was held relating to paving of 5th St NE, (gravel road behind Gussner School) from 12th Ave to 27th Ave NE to be included in next year’s paving district.

Mayor Andersen said the city needs to work out an equitable Special Assessment plan in establishing a paving district.

She said new development in the area warrants paving the street, along with storm water management issues.

The Jamestown Public School District will be included in conversations, concerning funding the project.

The committee’s consensus is to have the city research plans.

The committee considered a memo regarding proposed change order no. 2 related to a Water Pump Station Improvements project in Southwest Jamestown.

Darrell Hournbuckle from Interstate Engineering said the project relates to multiple line breaks in the area.

Jamestown water superintendent, Steve Suko said since the new Southwest Jamestown water tower went on line, 26 water main breaks have occurred.

The committee recommends replacing two pumps at a cost of $24,150.

The meeting was shown live on CSi Cable 67 followed by replays.

Deputies who responded to a call to check on Simmons say the smell in the house was so bad it made them sick. A hazmat team was called to the scene.

Ronald Simmons told police his brother suffered from mental illness and hadn’t left the house for five years.

 WORLD SERIES…

UNDATED (AP) – The World Series resumes Friday night in San Francisco after Wednesday night’s 7-2 win by the Royals. That victory evened up the best-of-seven series after the Giants won the opening game Tuesday night. Game 2 was tied at 2-2 before the Royals exploded for five runs in the sixth inning.

Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum (LIHN’-sih-kuhm) was sent for an MRI of his tight back to determine whether he can remain on the active roster when the World Series resumes at AT&T Park.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was walked off the field by athletic trainer Dave Groeschner during the eighth inning of San Francisco’s 7-2 loss in Game 2 when his left lower back tightened. Lincecum retired five straight before exiting during Salvador Perez’s at-bat.

The pitching matchup for Game 3 has Tim Hudson scheduled to start for the Giants against Jeremy Guthrie.

If neither team sweeps the three games in San Francisco, the series will shift back to Kansas City for Game 6 next Tuesday.

 NBA…

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A freak back injury has put the career of 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash in limbo. The two-time NBA MVP has been ruled out for the season after suffering this latest injury a few days ago carrying his bags.

The Lakers and Nash announced their joint decision Thursday, less than a week before the start of what would have been Nash’s 19th NBA season. He played in just 15 games last year with nerve root irritation, but hoped for a comeback season after several months of rehabilitation.

Instead, the Canadian point guard played in just three preseason games before feeling more back pain.

Nash has played in just 65 games since the Lakers traded four draft picks for him in 2012. He is due $9 million this season.
