  The National Weather Service forecast calls for a chance of snow in western North Dakota on Wednesday, the day many people travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. High temperatures are expected to range from the single digits in the northeast to the mid-20s in the southwest.
 
     The forecast for Thanksgiving on Thursday calls for a chance of snow in the west and central parts of the state, and high 10-15.  Light accumulating snow is possible Thanksgiving night, into Friday, followed by another shot of cold air into the weekend, producing wind chills near 25 below in the north on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

 

MONDAY MORNING NDDOT ROAD REPORT….

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Rain and snow have created treacherous traveling conditions in eastern North Dakota.
 
     The state Transportation Department has issued a travel alert for the region. That means people can still travel but should use caution because of the conditions.
 
     The alert includes the cities of Fargo, Grand Forks and Wahpeton.
 
    

Valley City, ND CHI Mercy Health (Mercy Hospital) is excited to announce the upcoming 19th Annual Festival of Trees to be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Valley City Eagles Club.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Mercy Health (Mercy Hospital’s) Foundation Director, Stephanie Mayfield, said, that with the support of individuals and area businesses, Mercy Healthcare’s Foundation raised $12,000 at last year’s event and was able to complete the renovation of Inpatient Rooms at the Hospital! Funds raised at this year’s Festival of Trees will go towards purchasing new equipment for our Physical Therapy department. The Physical Therapy Department has identified four pieces of new equipment totaling $24,000—so the goal is being stretched for this year’s event.

The event will feature a Silent and Live Auction and offer live Musical Entertainment, Hors d’oeuvres, Quilt Raffle, and Fellowship. New this year will also be a Deluxe Trip Raffle (valued at $5000), with the winner having a choice of trips to one of three locations, New Orleans, Cancun, or Boston, with airfare for two, paid.

There will also be a Wine Pull, and a Designer Purse (to be filled with an undetermined amount of cash!) featured on the live auction. The Hospital Staff create and donate many beautiful gift baskets for the Silent Auction along with terrific donations from local businesses. The Live Auction will feature uniquely decorated live and artificial Christmas trees, wreaths, center pieces, and mantle pieces. Another new item for the Live Auction will be Stephanie preparing a New England Shrimp Boil Experience for a lucky bidder and 7 of their friends to be prepared in their home and paired with wine, appetizers, and homemade Chocolate Rum Cake for dessert.

Tickets are available at Mercy Hospital’s lobby admission desk, $20 per person, or at the door the night of the event. The doors (and silent auction) will open at 6-p.m, and at 8-p.m. the live auction starts.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – West Fargo police have arrested a man who they say assaulted his wife and bit off a portion of a taxi driver’s nose.
 
   The 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday after the cab driver called 911. Police say the suspect began assaulting his 21-year-old wife during a cab ride from Fargo to West Fargo. They say he assaulted the 32-year-old taxi driver and bit off a portion of his nose after the driver called police.
 
     Police say both victims were taken by ambulance to a Fargo hospital for injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
 
     The man is being held without bond at the Cass County jail. He faces charges of aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault, preventing arrest and interfering with a 911 call.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota lawmaker wants to end the state income tax. Representative Scott Louser says he’ll introduce a bill to set it at 0 percent, rather than push for an outright repeal. Mandan Republican Sen. Dwight Cook says it’s unclear if the GOP-controlled Legislature “has the political will” to do away with the levy.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota health officials have put together a set of guidelines to advice individuals traveling to Ebola-affected nations in West Africa.
 
     Officials say people traveling to Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mali or Liberia should inform the Department of Health about their plans prior to traveling. Officials also ask that individuals coordinate their travel with a well-established group that routinely operates in those countries.
 
     Upon returning to North Dakota, travelers should follow all protocols issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials add residents should contact the Health Department as soon as they return to the state to coordinate their 21-day monitoring period.
 
     The World Health Organization has said the Ebola epidemic in West Africa has sickened more than 15,100 people and caused more than 5,400 deaths.

 

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – A citizens group in Devils Lake is pushing for a public vote on a proposed oil refinery.
 
     Mary Lundy is a spokeswoman for the Devils Lake Oil Refinery Citizens. She tells saysthe city should have gathered input from residents before signing a letter of support for the project.
 
     Mayor Dick Johnson says the letter falls far short of any commitment on the city’s part and only signifies a willingness to look into the project.
 
     Canada-based Eagles Ledge Energy wants to build a $200 million refinery in Devils Lake’s industrial park to process 20,000 barrels of oil daily. The city scheduled a Monday night meeting to unveil the plans to the public.

 

In sports…

Helena MT   Carroll College, Saturday, tallied a 49-0 win in Helena,  eliminating  the VCSU  Vikings from postseason play, in the opening round of the NAIA National Football Playoffs

The  Vikings season ends with a 9-2 overall record, while,  the Saints stopped the second longest winning streak in the country at eight games, as Carroll College holds the longest winning streak in the nation, currently at 10 games.

The  Vikings end the 2014 season 14th in the national rankings and the North Stat Athletic Association champions with a perfect 6-0 conference record.

 

Jamestown  (CSi) The  victorious UJ Jimmies volleyball team defeated Kansas Wesleyan in Jamestown Friday  in a NAIA opening round match, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20).

 The Jimmies travel to Sioux City, Iowa December 2, 2014,  one of the final 24 teams in the opening round.

It’s pool play in Sioux City and if the Jimmies finish in the top-2 of their pool they will enter a single elimination tournament. The pool play match schedule will be released on Sunday night.

This was Jamestown’s third appearance in the NAIA opening round, but had not ever advanced passed the first match.

 

Meanwhile  the Blue Jays volleyball team still managed the second best finish in school history with 5th place in the consolation round of volleyball tournament action in Minot defeating Bismarck for thr consolation championship,  3-1 (27-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-22).

Two years ago, Jamestown lost in the consolation championship to Shanley in a five-setter which had been the best finish until last year’s state title.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State will begin its quest for its fourth straight FCS national championship as the Number 2 overall seed in the playoffs.
 
     New Hampshire (10-1) earned the top seed in the 24-team tournament pairings released Sunday. The top eight seeds receive first-round byes.
 
     The field includes 11 conference champions who automatically qualified and 13 teams with at-large bids. All games will be played at home sites starting Saturday, except the Jan. 10 championship game in Frisco, Texas.
 
     North Dakota State (11-1) will play its first game Dec. 6 against the winner of South Dakota State and Montana State.
 
     New Hampshire will play Dec. 6 against the winner of the Sacred Heart-Fordham game.
 
     Other top seeds receiving byes were: No. 3 Jacksonville State, No. 4 Eastern Washington, No. 5 Illinois State, No. 6 Villanova, No. 7 Coastal Carolina and No. 8 Chattanooga.

 

Valley City (CSi) Valley City State University head baseball coach Casey Olney has announced that Oakes native Jon Tyre has signed a letter of intent to play baseball with the Vikings in 2015-16.

A 6-foot tall pitcher and infielder from Oakes, N.D., Tyre pitched 68 innings during the high school and summer baseball seasons. He finished with a 2.15 ERA, 73 strikeouts and an 8-3 record on the mound.

Olney says, “We are excited to welcome Jon to the Viking family. We have been following him for awhile now and think that he will be a great addition to the program. Pitching is most likely the future for Jon, and he will have the chance to compete for innings early on in his career. We are looking forward to seeing him continue to develop and fill out during his senior year. Jon is a great student and bright young man that we think brings a lot to the program on and off the field. ”

He plans to major in athletic training while at VCSU.

The Viking baseball team finished last season third in the North Star Athletic Association and posted an 8-3 record this fall under head coach Casey Olney.

 LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A Gophers team picked fifth in the seven-team Big Ten West in the preseason will play at Wisconsin on Saturday for the division title and a matchup with East champ Ohio State next month. Minnesota has lost 10 straight and 15 of the last 17 to Wisconsin. The Gophers haven’t won in Madison since 1994 in the series that dates to 1890.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Game and Fish Department is holding meetings around the state to give residents an opportunity to talk about outdoors issues.
 
     The agency’s annual fall advisory board meetings were getting underway Monday in Watford City and Cogswell. They wrap up Dec. 2 in Bismarck and Killdeer. In between there will be meetings in Fordville, Jamestown, Bowbells and Langdon.

     The advisory board meetings are held each spring and fall to give the public a chance to discuss fish and wildlife issues and ask questions of department officials and district advisers. The governor appoints eight Game and Fish advisers to each represent a section of the state and serve as liaisons between the department and the public.

 

St. Cloud   The St. Cloud State University Huskies won their home opener and third straight game overall, defeating the University of Jamestown 70-62 on Sunday. 

Lexy Petermann and Kyli Van Klei led four Huskies in double figures with 11 points each. Chelsea Nooker and Andrea Thomas scored 10 each for SCSU.

Jessica Buck had 24 points to led the Jimmies, who outshot the Huskies 48.1% to 39.7% as well as outrebounded them 43-31.

Kyra Dewald joined Buck in double figures with 10 points. Chelsey Frydenlund added 9 points and 11 rebounds for the Jimmies, who will face Concordia-St. Paul in an exhibition on Tuesday.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Eddie Lacy rushed for 125 yards on 25 carries as the Green Bay Packers hung on for a 24-21 victory over the Minnesota Vikings yesterday. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and again avoided a turnover for the Packers. They moved past Detroit into sole possession of first place in the NFC North when the Lions lost to the Patriots.

UNDATED (AP) – It was just another garden-variety, fourth-quarter Mile High miracle for Peyton Manning. Manning directed the Denver Broncos to 22 points in the fourth quarter in orchestrating a 39-36 come-from-behind victory over upset-minded Miami.
 

Matt Forte (FOR’-tay) rushed for two touchdowns in the third quarter, and the Chicago Bears beat their ex-coach Lovie Smith and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21-13 in his return to Soldier Field. The Bears improved to 5-6. Tampa Bay is 2-9.

     UNDATED (AP) – The new Associated Press Top-25 football poll has been released with no change at the top from last week’s poll. Florida State remains No. 1 with Alabama No. 2, Oregon third and Mississippi State fourth. Baylor and TCU flipped positions with Baylor now ranked fifth and TCU sixth. The rest of the top-10 teams features Ohio State, Georgia, UCLA and Michigan State.
 
     As far as first-place votes are concerned FSU got 37 with Alabama 21 and Oregon 2.

     KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Longtime LSU coach Dale Brown and Shaquille O’Neal were inducted together into the College Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday night in Kansas City.
 
     They were joined by six other luminaries, including former Duke star Grant Hill, Louisville standout Darrell Griffith, longtime Maryland coach Gary Williams, Stetson’s Glenn Wilkes Sr., Five-Star Basketball Camp founder Howard Garfinkel and the late Prairie View A&M star Zelmo Beaty.

     LILLE, France (AP) – Roger Federer defeated Richard Gasquet (ree-SHARD’ gas-KAY’) 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the first reverse singles match to give Switzerland the Davis Cup final against France. The win put the Swiss on top 3-1 in the best of five competition.
 
     The 17-time Grand Slam champion gave Switzerland its first title in the team competition and added the only big trophy in tennis missing from his collection.

     Hamilton wins race and world title
 
     ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – A dream season for British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has ended with a victory in the final race of the season and the World Championship.  Despite not sleeping the night before the Abu Dhabi (AH’-boo DAH’-bee) Grand Prix, Hamilton finished first in a race he only needed to finish first or second in to clinch the title, his second. Hamilton also won the F1 title in 2008. Mercedes teammate Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg started the day on the pole and just 17 points back of Hamilton but he never recovered from a poor start.
 
     Overall, Hamilton finished the season with 384 points, with Rosberg notching 317 and Daniel Ricciardo (rih-KAR’-doh) 238 to finish third.

GOLF…

    DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – Henrik Stenson successfully defended his DP World Tour Championship title at the European Tour’s season-ending event. The Swede shot a final-round 2-under 70 to win by two strokes over three players, including Rory McIlroy, with an overall 16-under finish.
 
     LPGA…
  
     NAPLES, Fla. (AP) – New Zealand teenager Lydia Ko ended a big year on the LPGA Tour with the largest payoff in women’s golf. The 17-year-old won the final event of the year and in the process won the $1 million bonus from the “Race to CME Globe.” She finished regulation in a three-way tie and eventually defeated Carlota Ciganda of Spain on the fourth extra hole in Naples, Florida.
 
     Ko played the 18th hole five times on Sunday and made par each time. The last par was worth $1.5 million, including the bonus and the $500 payoff for the tournament win.

 

 In world and national news…

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – It’s warm today and the snow is melting in parts of the Buffalo, New York area slammed last week by some 7 feet of snow, but that’s not giving residents much to cheer about as they now worry about flooding. Schools are closed and families rushed to move any valuables out of vulnerable basements. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning.
 
     FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) – A grand jury is widely expected to meet again today to consider whether to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black 18-year-old in Ferguson Missouri. There’s still no firm indication of when a decision will be announced. Protesters continue to demand justice for Michael Brown. Authorities have called for calm but prepared for possible violence, depending on the decision.
 
     VIENNA (AP) – Western diplomats say there is last-minute progress on a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers but talks are still expected to go beyond today’s deadline for an agreement. The West wants restrictions on the nuclear program and Iran wants relief from international sanctions.
 
     BAGHDAD (AP) – Iraqi troops backed by Shiite militiamen and Kurdish security forces have wrestled two eastern towns away from Islamic State militants. Police officials in Diyala province say Iraqi forces entered the towns of Saadiya and Jalula after fierce clashes and that some fighting is still going on against pockets of resistance.
 
     RABAT, Morocco (AP) – Morocco’s government says at least 17 people are dead and another 18 missing after heavy rains brought major flooding in the south of the country. News reports say dozens of homes have been swept away and bridges cut by the flooding.
