FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Shoppers are hitting stores throughout the Dakotas to take advantage of Black Friday deals, but some say they’ve found the scene a bit calmer than in previous years.

Shawna Steen, of Maplewood, Minnesota, tells The Associated Press that Black Friday is an annual outing in Fargo for her and her sisters. But she says this year’s event was remarkably quiet, and she speculates that a lot of people did their shopping on Thursday.

The day after Thanksgiving is generally considered the kickoff to the holiday shopping season. People lined up outside stores throughout the Dakotas early Friday. But many stores opened even earlier, on Thursday.

At the Gordmans in Sioux Falls, Manager Jacob Rhodes told KDLT-TV that 150 people were in line at suppertime Thursday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Retailers in the Dakotas are expecting a strong holiday shopping season.

The day after Thanksgiving is generally considered the kickoff to the season, with stores offering “Black Friday” deals that draw shoppers to stores in droves.

Nationally, holiday sales are forecast to grow 4.1 percent over last year, the highest increase since 2011.

South Dakota Retailers Association Executive Director Shawn Lyons says he expects a similar increase in South Dakota. He says better weather than last year is one reason. An early October blizzard put a damper on many families’ Christmas budgets last year.

North Dakota Retail Association President Mike Rud (rood) says holiday sales in North Dakota might be up 5-6 percent over last year. He cites not only the western oil boom but a strong overall economy.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police are searching for a man who allegedly assaulted five people in a mobile home, at least one of whom was attacked with a baseball bat.

A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Attorneys for a Fargo man who was arrested when police took a drug-sniffing dog into his apartment complex without a warrant are deciding whether to appeal their case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The North Dakota Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to reconsider the case of Matthew Nguyen, who was arrested in December 2012 and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. The court earlier ruled that the search was legal.

Police got into Nguyen’s secured apartment complex when one of the officers grabbed the door after a woman opened it to enter or leave. Nguyen says it’s a violation of privacy.

Defense attorney Mark Friese, of Fargo, said Thursday that Nguyen’s representatives are “evaluating the options.”

Nguyen has 90 days to petition the U.S Supreme Court.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A jury has convicted a North Dakota man in a sexual abuse case that goes back 17 years.

A sentencing date has not been set.

BISMARCK, N.D. NEW YORK (AP) – One of the unanswered questions for now is how much has Thanksgiving Day shopping hurt the more traditional Black Friday sales. Last year, sales on Black Friday slumped 13.2 percent as more stores opened on Thanksgiving Day.
IERAPETRA, Greece (AP) – A town in southern Crete is serving as a temporary shelter for nearly 600 men, women and children who arrived in a crippled smuggling ship after more than a week at sea. Earthquakes and other seismic activity had increased in late August.
