Grace Eunice (Johnson) Scallon left this world onThursday, December 11, 2014 at her home near Edgeley, ND.

She was born to Lottie (Bahl) and Carl Johnson on March 25, 1926 at the family farm near Lucca, ND. She was given the name Grace and lived her life fulfilling the meaning of her name. Grace went to school in Lucca for six years and then to Fingal, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Ellendale Industrial and Normal College where she obtained her teaching degree. Grace taught in several rural schools during WWII where she also performed all the other tasks a rural school teacher was expected to do.

Grace married Robert Scallon in 1950. They built a house near Edgeley, ND where they raised their seven children. Bob passed away in 1975, but Grace continued to live on the farm until her death. She always referred to her life on the farm as “heaven on earth.”

Grace was a member of the Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley. She was a member of the Altar Society and taught 2nd grade Catechism for many years.

Grace spent many hours crocheting and embroidering. In her later years, she took art lessons. She loved to garden and did lots of canning.(Her pickles are a family favorite). She was a wonderful cook and every year hosted Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for her large family, even this past year Attending family events was a priority for her and also an opportunity for her to travel to many destinations. Grandma Grace loved spending time with her grandchildren when they shared their summer vacations with her on the farm. Unknown to many, she loved to polka. She danced her last polka at her granddaughter’s wedding in Arizona on September 13th, 2014.

Grace is survived by her daughters, Annette (James) Schmidt, Nancy (Karl) Schladweiler, and Carol (Bruce) Flanigan; her sons, Lee (Luanne) Scallon, Kenneth (Elaine) Scallon, and Jim (Carol Ann) Scallon. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, Angela (Mike) Matson, Cody (Lori) Carter, Lance (Nicole) Carter, Chelsey (Aaron) Asiala, Kayne, and Roman Quin Schmidt, Ben, Joey, Jessie, Zach, and Quentin Scallon, Kent and Tim (Rebekah) Scallon, Adam (Liza) and Scott (Kristi) Schladweiler, Nicole (Mateo) Graziosi, Brett, Josh, and Trey Flanigan and Anna Grace Scallon. Also surviving are eleven great grandchildren; her sister, Phyllis; sisters-in-law, Esther and Delane Scallon; brother-in-law, Quin Scallon; and sister-in-law, Betty Gibbons and Luverne Johnson; many nieces and nephews who were all very special to her; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; daughter, Roberta; brothers, Earl, Clifford, and Leslie; and sisters, Luella and Hazel.

 

Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 p.m., December 13, 2014 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley.

Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.

Interment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
