Mary Bergman, 92, of Edgeley, ND, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at

Manor St. Joseph, Edgeley.

Mary Elizabeth Shockman was born on December 8, 1922, at the hospital

in Dickey, ND, the daughter of Michael and Kathryn (Rausch) Shockman.

They lived on a farm high on a hill overlooking Grand Rapids. In 1928

when Mary was 5 her parents bought a home in Berlin where the family

moved and their farm was rented out. Her family was always members of

St. John’s Catholic Church in Berlin. They attended school in Berlin

until moving back to the farm about four years later. She then went

to school in Grand Rapids where she played basketball and softball;

she was athletic and very competitive. Her senior year she attended

and graduated from St John’s Academy. Mary then spent 1 year in

business school in Fargo, ND followed by a short stay in Minneapolis,

MN where she worked until returning back home.

She met Harold Bergman at a barn dance and on Nov. 17th, 1942 they

were married in Berlin, ND They lived and farmed on the Bergman

homestead in Russel Township, they were members of the Assumption

Catholic Church in Dickey where she was active in altar society. She

was a homemaker, loved to sew, garden, plant flowers and watch things

grow especially her children and grandchildren.

They enjoyed as a family visiting relatives, friends and neighbors,

playing cards, going to parks, and having 4th of July picnics.

They were fortunate to be able to travel and see places all over the

world.

When they retired they enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter.

Her husband Harold passed away in 1987, she moved to Jamestown and

continued to winter in Arizona until about 2002. She moved to Manor St.

Joseph in Edgeley in 2011 where she was well cared for until going to

her eternal home.

Mary also loved to golf in her later years, she and Harold were

charter members of the Grand Rapids Memorial Country Club and she was

a member of Hillcrest Country Club in Jamestown.

She is survived by her children, James (Jan Webb), Francis (Deone

Redmann), David (Linda Swanson), Pat (Lynnae Litt), Louis (Julie

Guthmiller), Annette (David) Redmann, Harold, Jr., Rosemary (Tom)

Cashman, Ralph Matthew (Jennifer Moore), Joe (April Webb), Cathy

(Kurt) Brandenburg; 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren;

brother, Kelly Shockman(Maxine Rasmusson) and sister in-laws Dorothy

(Cross) Shockman, and Mary (McKown) Shockman Mary was preceded in

death by her parents Michael and Kathryn (Rausch) Shockman; husband,

Harold; daughter, Mary Margaret; brothers, Clifford, Victor, Joseph

(Loraine Johnson), Roman, James, Thomas, Kenneth (Joan Sperlein), Baby

boy, and Michail; sisters, Grace (Bill Hartman), LaRayne (Andrew

Lightfoot), Lois(Albert Mases), and Phyllis (Hayes).

 

Mary worked hard at caring for her large family. She weathered many

trials but her strong and enduring faith, love of God and Church was

always a part of who she was. She lived and taught by example.

 

Mary was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt

and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her and always live in

our hearts.

 

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at St.

James Basilica, Jamestown, ND.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at

Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown and an hour before the

services at the church.

Vigil: 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at St. James Basilica,

Jamestown, ND.

Interment: Assumption Cemetery, Dickey, ND.
