Harley J. “Stogie” Stoltenburg, 86, of Jamestown, ND, died Monday, January 19, 2015 at Sanford in Fargo.

Harley Jacob Stoltenburg was born on March 20, 1928, in Altamont, SD, the son of Fred and Ida (Bogenrief) Stoltenburg. He was raised on the family farm and spent his youth in and around Clear Lake. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1946 and entered the United States Marine Corp that year. Harley served during the Korean War and was a champion boxer in the USMC with a record of 15-0, winning all by KO, and was honorably discharged in 1951. Harley had several jobs during his lifetime. He worked for Johnsonville Gas & Grocery Store, and Turnerville. He owned and operated Harbor Lights. Harley was one of the largest cream and egg buyers, owning 11 creameries and, at the same time, a dozen laundromats. Harley was also in the wool & fur buying and selling business. He owned the former School for the Blind in Gary, SD and converted it into a nursing home, along with a partner. Later, he went into the insurance business. Harley married Irene Sanchez on February 17, 1949 and had two sons by that marriage. He met Pauline Jungen and had one daughter. Later, Harley met LuElla Matt Schock and had one daughter. They wed in 1989 in Nevada. Harley enjoyed his life, working hard and playing even harder. He had a very strong love for his wife, all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be missed by all and forever in our hearts. Harley also loved his two Dachshunds, Stogie and Peanut; they brightened his days. He enjoyed ice fishing, hunting, playing pinochle, golfing, dancing, crossword puzzles, coin & stamp collecting. Harley was a member of the St. James Basilica, the American Legion, and the Republican Party.

Harley is survived by his wife, LuElla; sons, Laren (Renee) Stoltenburg, Rick (Lori) Stoltenburg; daughters, Sharon (Nick) Mack, Lisa (Chad) Davis; son, Tony, who moved home to help Harley remain in his home; daughter, Danette (Roger) Mindt; daughter-in-law, Dawn Schock; grandchildren, Maxwell (April), Geoffrey (Laura), Jason (Rebecca), Jessica (Ryan), Francis, Audrey, Joseph, Elizabeth (Chris), Jacob, Leah, Kara (Jeremy), Eric, Erin, Joshua, Bryan (Keri), and Stephanie; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Mavis) Stoltenburg; sister, Nadine (Marvin) Goens; brother-in-law, Larry (Mary Ann) Matt; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sarbaum; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven Schock; daughter-in-law, Francine; brothers, Delbert, Darwin, and Ardell Stoltenburg; and sisters-in-law, Pat Weixel and Mary Trzpuc.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Vigil: 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Interment: St. Hubert’s Cemetery, Montpelier, ND
