The University is accepting donations as well as items for the auction. They announced that with the funds they receive in the event, they are able to provide scholarships to almost 100% of their students. The auction book will be online at uj.edu.

RAY, N.D. (AP) – Memorial services have been scheduled for three Ray High School students killed in a vehicle crash.

Services for 17-year-olds Dalen Dorval and Waylyn McRae and 18-year-old Tanner Garman will be held in the school gymnasium

A joint service was scheduled Friday night for Dorval and McRae, and a Saturday morning service was set for Garman.

The Highway Patrol says the teens were in a westbound pickup truck that collided with a semitrailer on an icy U.S. Highway 2 on Monday night.

All three boys were members of the Ray basketball team. The team and fans planned to wear green in their memory at this weekend’s district tournament.

HARVEY, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that displaced residents of an apartment building in Harvey.

The blaze began Thursday afternoon, and it took firefighters several hours to bring it under control. The building was destroyed.

It was not immediately known how many people lived in the building. Two nearby hotels offered free housing to those who were displaced.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are asking for the public’s help in finding a 12-year-old girl who has been missing since Wednesday morning.

Police say Lena Grace Deoliveira was last seen at her home in southwest Fargo at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Deoliveira is described as a five-foot-eight-inch white girl with brown eyes and brown hair. She is about 120 pounds.

Anyone with information of Deoliveira’s whereabouts should call Fargo police.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The attorney for the reigning North Dakota teacher of the year is petitioning a judge to release the medical records of the student with whom his client allegedly had sexual contact.

Defense attorney Robert Hoy says he can show that Aaron Knodel’s former student has a history of mental health issues and that her credibility could be in question.

Knodel is accused of having sexual contact with a 17-year-old female student more than five years ago. He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of felony corruption or solicitation of a minor. He could face up to 35 years in prison if convicted.

The prosecutor wants the information limited to what the student told a doctor about her and Knodel’s alleged relationship.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Board of Higher Education spent several hours listening to college presidents criticize a House budget bill and then adjourned before deciding whether to take a stand on the legislation.

The board discussed a so-called position paper that would ask legislators to fund certain capital projects and allow the board to have the authority to set tuition and fees “as has been done for most of the past 100 years.”

Some presidents told the board that the budget proposal would result in a high turnover of employees and substantial cuts to academic programs.

Board members had mixed feelings on a proposal to switch legal and audit services from the university system to other state agencies.

Thursday’s meeting in Bismarck started at 2 p.m. and adjourned at 6:45.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general’s office says the Lindahl Township Board of Supervisors violated the state’s open meetings laws by not posting any notice of a December meeting.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEN’-juhm) says the board in Williams County admits it did not post any notice before its Dec. 8 meeting. The attorney general’s office says it doesn’t appear the board was trying to keep it a secret.

Stenehjem says his office received a request for an opinion from Joel and Stephanie Vagts about the issue. Stenehjem said in a ruling Thursday that a township is a political subdivision, which means it’s a “public entity” subject to open records and meeting laws.

The attorney general says the minutes from the meeting must be provided to the Vagts for free.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Commerce Department has awarded workforce development grants to Bismarck State College and the State College of Science in Wahpeton.

Science is getting about $265,000 to support the training of students in a robotic welding technician program.

BSC is getting about $406,000 for several programs, including welding and power plant technology.

State workforce enhancement grants require a dollar-for-dollar match with private money.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A third person is facing federal charges in connection with several overdose cases in the Grand Forks area that involved the powerful synthetic drug powdered fentanyl.

Twenty-year-old Joshua Fulp pleaded not guilty Thursday to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.

Kain Schwandt and David Noye Junior are facing the same charge in the case. Authorities say two people died from drug overdoses and three others became seriously ill.

Fulp made his first appearance Thursday in Fargo, dressed in orange prison clothing. He was ordered to return to a Minneapolis substance abuse treatment center. Trial is set for April 28th.

A federal public defender could not immediately be reached for comment.

A detention hearing was scheduled later Thursday for Noye.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A TV news anchor from Fargo heard President Obama’s plans on expanding trade during a rare one-one-one interview at the White House.

Obama told Kirsten Kealy of WDAY-TV on Thursday that he believes his greatest accomplishment has been saving the economy and promoting exports. He said it’s helped to create 125,000 jobs in North Dakota and Minnesota and generated over $20 billion worth of exports.

Obama also mapped out his proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement to sell products to Japan, Australia and Vietnam. The president told Kealy that the plan would provide a better deal for U.S. workers and businesses, and “make sure China isn’t writing the trade rules.”

Kealy told viewers that the interview was scheduled for 4 minutes, but she “managed to stretch it” to 6 minutes.

The league suspended Peterson through at least April 15th for his involvement in a child abuse case.

GOLF…

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Jim Herman fired a bogey-free 5-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the PGA’s Honda Classic in Florida. Top-ranked Rory McIlroy struggled in his first round in the US this year, shooting a 3-over 73 that leaves him eight back.

CHONBURI, Thailand (AP) – Americans Stacy Lewis and Brittany Lang share the lead with Yani Tseng (YAH’-nee sehng) after the first round of the LPGA event being played in Thailand. In world and national news…

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) – A militant group called Ansar Banglar 7 is tweeting that it carried out the meat cleaver attack on prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger Avijit Roy. Roy was killed and his wife was wounded as they were returning from a book fair last night in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. Police tell a local newspaper that Ansar Banglar 7 was previously unknown. The group says the attack was carried out because of Roy’s “crime against Islam.” Roy was known for speaking out against religious extremism.

LONDON (AP) – A former head of Britain’s National Counterterrorism Security Office says police and intelligence agencies lack the resources to monitor a growing number of terror suspects. Chris Phillips says the fact that a young Londoner can travel to Syria and become the masked militant known as “Jihadi John” shows that current control systems are not working and the number of people being radicalized via the Internet is increasing. Officials say “Jihadi John” is Mohammed Emwazi (ehm-WAH’-zee), who’s in several beheading videos.

PARIS (AP) – A global agency fighting terrorist financing is urging governments to do more to starve the Islamic State group of funds. The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force says the extremists are financially vulnerable as oil prices have fallen and their ability to extort resources in Iraq and Syria is peaking. A task force report says most of the militants’ money comes from looting banks and farms, selling oil, kidnapping for ransom, remittances from abroad and donations.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Republican leaders are hoping that a short-term funding bill for Homeland Security will be passed before a midnight tonight deadline. But they’re getting heat from their conservative colleagues. Numerous House Republicans say they’d rather let the department go unfunded for a few days than pass a bill that no longer tries to block President Barack Obama’s executive actions to stop the deportations of millions of immigrants in the U.S. illegally. They say the last government shutdown had minimal impact.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) – A South African couple have found their daughter 17 years after she was kidnapped. Police say the newborn was abducted from a Cape Town hospital in 1997, and the Cape Argus newspaper reports that she had been living just a couple of miles from her biological parents. The discovery happened after the girl attended school with her biological sister, and people noticed their similarities. Police took DNA samples before making an arrest.
