Valley City (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, four individuals were injured in a crash 4 miles southeast of Kathryn at around 12:21 a.m. Sunday.

35 year-old Tylando Laroque of Fingal, was traveling North when he lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway, striking a tree head-on.

29 year-old Chad Henderson-Doyle of Reynolds, 27 year-old Eronna Laroque of Valley City, and 21 year-old John Flores of Fargo, were injured in the incident and transferred to Mercy Hospital in Valley City.

Tylando Laroque was charged with driving under the influence.

 

 

 VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – The annual North Dakota Winter Show begins its six-day run in Valley City on Tuesday.
 
     The state’s longest-running agricultural show is in its 78th year. It runs through the weekend.
 
     The headline entertainer this year is country singer Rodney Atkins. His concert is scheduled Friday night.
 
     The Winter Show features livestock and crop shows and exhibits, a rodeo and other events.
 
     Two people also will be inducted into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame on Saturday – potato farmer, businessman and philanthropist Ron Offutt, and John Bollingberg of Bremen, who has worked in the state’s agriculture industry for more than six decades.

 HARVEY, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say no foul play is suspected in a fire that displaced residents of an apartment building in Harvey. The Harvey Police Department says nine of the building’s 11 units were occupied when the blaze began last week. Police say 16 people have been displaced from their homes.

The American Red Cross reports that volunteers across North Dakota are assisting to open a service center in Harvey, North Dakota to aid families displaced by a Thursday afternoon apartment fire.

Volunteers from Jamestown, Minot, and Fargo, were on their way to the acene Friday morning, to meet immediate needs.

They provided seasonal clothing, shoes, toiletry items and toys for children.

Wells County Emergency Management was also assisting in recovery needs and plans.

 

　Jamestown (CSi)  Jamestown Police is warning residents regarding two convicted sex offenders who have changed addresses.

Matthew Jacob Lee Graham is a 26 year old white male, 5’11″ tall weighing 172 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair.

He currently has no vehicle.

He now resides at 223 1st Ave South Apt#4 in Jamestown.

He has been assigned a high risk assessment by the North Dakot Risk Level Committee, of the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office.

His offense is listed as indecent exposure, stemming from exposing himself to a five year old male family friend.

He was convicted in April of 2004 in Kidder Count.  Disposition:  remanded to the Mesabi Academy treatment facility.

Graham is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.

Smith is a 19 year old white male 6’4″ tall weighing 190 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair.

He currently does not have a vehicle.

Smith has been assigned a high risk assessment by the North Dakota risk level committee of the Attorney General’s Office.

Smith was convicted of gross sexual imposition, involving a 14 year old girl he was sharing an apartment with. He was convicted in July of 2014 in Stutsman County District Court.

Disposition: one year, one day, with 239 days suspended with credit for time served, 127 days…5 years supervised probation.

Smith is currently on probation with North Dakota Parole and Probation.

Smith is on GPS monitoring.

Smith is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.

 WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) – A weekend fire destroyed the home of the manager at Cross Ranch State Park.
 
     Washburn Fire Chief Clayton Verke  says  the blaze was reported about 5 a.m. Sunday. No people were hurt, but one of the family’s dogs died in the fire. The house could not be saved.
 
     A heat lamp used to keep dogs warm is suspected as the cause of the fire.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) is urging the federal government to offer training for train derailments to first responders. The Minot Daily News reports Heitkamp has reintroduced the RESPONSE Act, which would work to ensure local firefighters and other emergency crews know how to handle an emergency caused by a train derailment.
 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota college presidents are worried about the impacts of the higher education budget approved by the state House, but lawmakers in both chambers say it’s a work in progress.
 
     The presidents say the bill has less money than the governor’s proposal and changes a well-researched funding formula they believe was fair to all schools.
 
     Opponents of the new formula say it hurts, among other things, schools with students who may need additional math and English classes and could eventually lead colleges to turn away people who are needed in the workforce. Proponents say the changes will increase the incentive for students to graduate on time.
 
     Senator Tim Flakoll and Representative Mike Nathe, who chair their respective education committees, say the final product will likely look different.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – An upright piano at the Minot Air Force Base that is more than a century old is being auctioned.
 
     The  Chickering and Sons piano was made between 1905 and 1910 and is currently at a storage facility at the base. The piano’s sale is being coordinated by Government Liquidation, which handles military surplus auctions.
 
     Pianos manufactured by Chickering and Sons during the time that the piano at auction was completed were made of rosewood and mahogany imported from South America. Similar pianos have sold for up to $16,000.
 
     Dennis Goldade with Government Liquidation says he doesn’t have information about where the piano had been before getting to the base.
 
     The auction closes Tuesday.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – College professors are being invited to the North Dakota oil patch for a two-day tour.
 
     The Lignite Energy Council and North Dakota Petroleum Council are hosting the energy tour on Aug. 5-6. It will be limited to 30 professors.
 
     The first day will focus on the oil industry and will include tours of a refinery and a man camp. The second day will include tours of a power plant and coal mine.
 
     There is no cost for the event. Professors may register at www.lignite.com/nd-energy-tour .

 

 DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman has earned her GED more than 50 years after dropping out of high school to help in her family’s farm.
 
 Katherine Schuler left school when she was in 10th grade in 1959. She spent the next 50 years raising four children and working various jobs.
 
     Schuler says she drew inspiration from her 14 grandchildren and reached out to the adult learning center at Lake Region State College last October to start studying for the GED.
 
     She passed the reading and social studies tests quickly, and last month, she passed the math test.
 
     April Duchscher with the school’s adult learning center says Schuler is a role model for the community.
 
     Schuler says she wanted her grandchildren to see how much she wanted an education.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck officials are reminding residents that the toilet is not a trash can.
 
     Officials say the city is experiencing an increase in wastewater pump station malfunctions. They say crews are regularly unclogging mounds of rags and wipes from pumps at a considerable expense.
 
     Officials say residents shouldn’t flush wipes because they can damage the city’s sewer system and may cause basement sewer backups.
 
     Increasingly popular bathroom wipes that are often advertised as flushable are being blamed for creating clogs and backups in sewer systems around the nation.
 
     Wastewater authorities nationwide say wipes may go down the toilet, but even many labeled flushable aren’t breaking down as they course through the sewer system. That’s costing some municipalities millions of dollars to unclog pipes and pumps and to replace and upgrade machinery.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Hall of fame boxer Virgil Hill says his final fight was everything he expected – and more.
 
     The five-time world champion from North Dakota beat Jimmy Campbell with a TKO in the second round on Saturday night at the Bismarck Event Center.
 
     Hill tells The Bismarck Tribune that he feels blessed to end his career in front of a boisterous crowd at the venue where he fought many bouts throughout his career. He never lost there.
 
     The 51-year-old Hill won an Olympic silver medal in 1984 and went on to win 50 of 57 fights as a professional in different weight classes. He earned five world titles and made 20 successful title defenses. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013.
 

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Spring light goose hunters in North Dakota can track the general locations of birds as they migrate through the state.
 
     The Game and Fish Department says hunters can call 701-328-3697 to hear recorded information 24 hours a day, or can check the agency’s website at www.gf.nd.gov for periodic updates.
 
     North Dakota’s spring light goose season opened Feb. 21 and continues through May 17.
 
     Wildlife officials say the availability of food and open water dictate when snow geese arrive in North Dakota. Huntable numbers usually aren’t around until late March or early April.

 

Valley City (CSi)  It will be the University of Jamestown and VCSU women squaring off for the NSAA basketball conference championship game.

It’s the Vikings  fourth conference championship game appearance in five seasons.

The Vikings won an 80-62  over Mayville State in Saturday’s NSAA semifinal.

Vikings improve to 22-8 overall. Comets drop to 18-8.

They take on the  Jimmies on Tuesday night at 5:30pm in Jamestown.

Tuesday’s winner will get an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.

The Jimmies will earn an at-large to the NAIA National Tournament, even if they lose, but the Vikings will need to win to get back to Sioux City.

VCSU had a streak of three-straight national tournament appearances snapped last year.

 

Jamestown (CSi)   Monday’s play at the Jamestown Civic Center starts with the Class B Region III Qualifying games. Ellendale and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler play at 4:30pm, followed by Carrington and Midkota-Kensal at 6 p.m.

The 2015 North Dakota Class B Boys District 5 Championship Game is set for 7:30 with Oakes meeting LaMoure-Litchville/Marion.

On Saturday, the second day of the 2015 North Dakota Class B District 5 Boys Basketball Tournament results from the three games  all went down to wire.

Grand Forks Central girls defeated Valley City  63-59.

The loss eliminates the Hi-Liners from the Eastern Dakota Conference Tournament. They end the season 7-16 overall.

VCHS boy’s basketball…

The Valley City Hi-Liner boys were eliminated from the Eastern Dakota Conference on Saturday afternoon in a 58-50 loss to Devils Lake.

The loss ends the Hi-Liners boy’s regular season at 4-16 overall.

 

 WYNDMERE, N.D. (AP) – A coach at Wyndmere school is offering a free live stream of sporting events to fans who can’t make it to games. WDAY-TV reports Shelly Orth has been broadcasting high school games and activities for the past few months. She uses her iPad to capture the action and then shares the video in real time through a streaming service called Cube.

(AP) – Frank Kaminsky scored 31 points in his final home game as No. 5 Wisconsin clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season title with a 68-61 victory yesterday over Michigan State. The Spartans trailed by 22 points before rallying in the second half. Bryn Forbes’ open 3 from the corner got them within 64-53 with about 2:30 left. Forbes finished with 21 points.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) – Jimmie Johnson has won the second race of the Sprint Cup season, pulling away following a restart with 13 laps remaining before beating Kevin Harvick by 1.8 seconds. Johnson had the fastest car after starting 37th because of inspection issues before Friday’s qualifier at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third, followed by pole-sitter and Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Padraig Harrington captured his first PGA Tour title in more than six years on Monday when he birdied the final hole in regulation and then beat 21-year-old rookie Daniel Berger on the second hole of a playoff.
 
     Leaving to Harrington to win the wildest finish of the season on the PGA Tour. It took two days to complete and included one stunning collapse after another, including one by Harrington.
 
     The three-time major champion had a one-shot lead until hitting into the water on the 17th hole for double bogey. On the same hole in the playoff, Harrington hit his tee shot to 3 feet. Berger, who closed with a 6-under 64, followed with a shot into the water.
 
     Ian Poulter hit five balls in the water and shot 75.

 LPGA-THAILAND
 
     CHONBURI, Thailand (AP) – South Korean Amy Yang has earned her second career LPGA title at the Honda Thailand, finishing two strokes ahead of third-round leader Stacy Lewis, two-time champion Tseng Yani of Taiwan and South Korean Mirim Lee. Yang closed with a 3-under 69 for a 15-under total.
 
     Lewis led after three rounds and remained in contention until she double-bogeyed 15 while Yang birdied.

     CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) – Top-ranked Lydia Ko shot a 1-under 70 to win the New Zealand Women’s Open by four shots.  The victory comes on the heels of the 17-year-old’s win last week in the Women’s Australian Open.
 

OBIT MINOSO…
 
     CHICAGO (AP) – Former Chicago White Sox outfielder Minnie Minoso (mih-NOH’-soh) has died, according to the Cook County medical examiner.  The Cuban-born Minoso became the majors’ first black player for a Chicago team and played 12 of his 17 seasons with the White Sox hitting .304 with 135 home runs and 808 RBIs for the franchise. The White Sox say Minoso was 90.

 

In world and national news…

MOSCOW (AP) – The killing of a prominent opposition figure in one of the most secure parts of the Russian capital is producing conflicting reports about possible surveillance footage of the slaying. The business daily newspaper Kommersant quotes anonymous sources as saying that closed circuit TV cameras in the area were not working. But a spokeswoman for Moscow’s information technology department says all city cameras were operational.
 
     KIEV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukraine is about to appeal to the United Nations and European union for a contingent of peacekeepers to be deployed in the country’s east where government forces are battling Russian-backed separatists. President Petro Poroshenko’s (por-oh-SHEHN’-kohz) office gave no specific details on the mission’s composition or any timetable for it but Russia is strongly against the idea. Fighting has waned in recent days as a cease-fire increasingly takes effect.
 
     GENEVA (AP) -Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met for a little less than an hour-and-a-half today in Geneva. Kerry tweeted that they talked about Ukraine, Syria and ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. Neither man smiled or spoke substantively as they shook hands during a photo op.
 
     KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – Officials say a pair of roadside bombings killed at least eight civilians in eastern Afghanistan, including women and children. Taliban insurgents frequently target the army and police with roadside bombs, which have also taken a heavy toll on civilians. Afghan security forces are embarking on a major offensive against the Taliban.
 
     BEIJING (AP) – A slick new documentary on China’s environmental woes is becoming all the rage. Hosted by former state television reporter Chai Jing, “Under the Dome” offers a well-produced look at the cost to the environment of 30 years of breakneck economic development. The program has racked up more than 28 million online views in two days, underscoring growing concern in the country over the impact of pollution.
