WINDTURBINEBISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A company that for years has been planning a wind turbine farm in southeastern North Dakota is now proposing significant changes.
 
     The Merricourt Wind Power Project in McIntosh and Dickey counties was to have up to 100 1.5 megawatt turbines. EDF Renewable Energy is now proposing 75 2-megawatt turbines. It would reduce the project area by half.
 
     The state Public Service Commission needs to approve the change. The PSC is holding a Thursday hearing in Ashley.
 
     EDF Renewable Energy says the newer, larger turbines are better technology. But officials also hope the move would help reduce the potential impact on two endangered species of birds.
 
     The proposed wind farm area is on the edge of the whooping crane migration corridor, and habitat in the area is suited to piping plovers.
