oldschoolhouseBISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota University System will begin accepting applications for the 2015 teacher shortage loan forgiveness program from April 1 – June 30, 2015. North Dakota has a loan forgiveness program that helps pay student loans if eligible.

“This program is a great incentive to teachers who choose to stay in North Dakota to lead our students into successful careers,” said Larry Skogen, Interim Chancellor of NDUS.

Applicants may be eligible if they held a full-time teaching contract in a defined teaching shortage area in North Dakota for a full academic year. Grade levels or teaching areas identified as having a shortage are defined by the Department of Public Instruction. In 2014, nearly 400 applicants were awarded loan forgiveness through this program.

  • Amount: Funded recipients are eligible for up to $1,000 (maximum of $3,000)
in loan forgiveness for each year they teach in a teacher shortage area.
  • Who is eligible: Educators who teach in North Dakota at a grade level or in a content area identified by the Department of Public Instruction as a teacher shortage area. The number of loan forgiveness applications approved each year is contingent upon legislative appropriations. Not all qualified applicants are assured funding.
