Update…

Spiritwood (CSi) (photos posted on line at CsiNewsNow.com) Authorities are investigating a crash on I-94 near the Spiritwood Exit that occurred Monday morning about 10-O’Clock.

The accident stemmed from an investigation into a van fire, by the Sheriff’s Office, and led to a crash at mile marker 270 at the scene between a semi and a Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office pickup. The westbound semi struck the rear of the Sheriff’s pickup. (Photo provided by passing trucker).

The Volvo was traveling westbound on Interstate 94. A deputy with Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office was conducting traffic control for a vehicle on the shoulder of the road that had burned up.

The deputy was standing outside of the patrol vehicle. The driver of the Volvo truck pulling a trailer, 39 year old Travis Bell, of Belmond, Iowa, failed to move over and began reaching for a water bottle. The Volvo struck the back end of the patrol vehicle and then traveled into the median. The patrol vehicle which had its flashing light on, was totaled.

The deputy was not hurt.

 The driver of the semitrailer was not hurt. The semitrailer had an estimated $40,000 in damage.

The K-9 in the patrol vehicle “Dreamos,” received several cuts and was transported to the vet and will be fine. The crash is is still under investigation by the NDHP.

The owner of the van provided a photo showing extensive fire damage to the van.

The fire was extinguished by the Jamestown Rural Fire Department.

Eight firefighters and three units responded,  on scene about 20 minutes.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office is informing residents in the area of 8th Ave NW & 17th St NW that the area will experience intermittent water outages throughout the day starting at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.

Residents in the area of 9th Ave SE & 11th St SE and 12th Ave SE & 11th St SE will experience intermittent water outages throughout the day starting at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 and possibly during the daytime hours on Thursday, April 30, 2015. It is anticipated that the utility repairs will be completed within the two working days in this area.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC), Finance Committee is setting guidelines to prevent reporting financial errors.

The JSDC Executive Committee recommended approval of the recent audit to the board of directors which will meet as part of the JSDC annual meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Quality Inn & Suites.

The recent JSDC audit also included its subsidiary Spiritwood Energy Park, and contained, “material weaknesses” in the internal financial bookkeeping of the organization, according to Schauer and Associates, Audit Manager, Linda Mohn.

The Spiritwood Energy Park Association (SEPA) Board of Directors also approved the audit at a Special Meeting.

JSDC owns 71 percent of the Energy Park while Great River Energy owns the remaining 29 percent.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Public is cordially invited to a celebrationas the Jamestown Kiwanis Club will be giving eight Jamestown Schools a Buddy Bench .

The Buddy Benches are supported locally by the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 4, the Jamestown Kiwanis Club, and is being coordinator by the local FOP Liason, Nellie Degen.

On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Nellie said, when a student sits on the Buddy Bench , it’s a signal for other students to approach them , asking them to join play . A Buddy Bench eliminates loneliness and fosters friendship.

She added that here are Buddy Benches all over the United States; however this is the first time any community will receive eight Buddy Benches as a donation. The eight schools receiving a Buddy Bench are Gussner, Lincoln, Louis L’Amour , Roosevelt, Washington , Victory Lutheran, Hill Crest, and St. John’s Academy.

She said to support our children and our schools the public is invited to join the Jamestown Kiwanis Club, Jamestown students, School principles, board members, Senator John Grabinger, Jamestown City Council Member Charlie Kourajian, and other government officials and the North Dakota Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 4 ( who helped put them together and will be delivering the benches) in a brief ceremony, at the Jamestown middle school, 203 2nd Ave SE , Friday , May 8, 2015, at 10: 30 am .

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Kiwanis Club is holding the annual Pancake Day on Monday May 4, 2015, from 7-a.m., to 7-p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are expecting to wrap up their session today. They’re working on the final bills of the 2015 Legislature.
 
     Both the House and Senate adjourned late Monday night.  Both chambers will resume work at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
 
     House Majority Leader Al Carlson of Fargo and his Republican Senate counterpart, Rich Wardner of Dickinson say they are hoping to adjourn the session sometime Tuesday once lawmakers finish work on remaining bills.
 
     One of the last bills is state Office of Management and Budget’s spending bill. The bill is often used for last-minute amendments. 
 
     Today will be the 77th day of the 2015 session. The North Dakota Constitution limits the Legislature to 80 days of meetings every two years.
 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The jury in the sexual misconduct trial of a former North Dakota teacher of the year will continue to discuss the fate of the educator for a second day Tuesday.
 
     Jurors in Aaron Knodel’s (kah-NOH’-dehl’s) case didn’t reach a verdict Monday after the defense and prosecution finished their closing arguments.
 
     The 36-year-old West Fargo High School English teacher is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student over a period of several weeks in early 2009. He’s pleaded not guilty to five counts of felony corruption or solicitation of a minor.
 
     Knodel and the student testified during the trial.
 
     Knodel was named North Dakota teacher of the year in 2014, before the allegations surfaced. He was suspended without pay when the charges were filed.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police in Fargo say the man who they suspect robbed a Gate City Bank over the weekend has been arrested in Minnesota.
 
     The 34-year-old man was arrested on an initial charge of robbery. Authorities say they used information from the man’s cellphone to locate him in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where he was taken into custody Sunday.
 
     Authorities say the man entered the bank on South University Drive around 12:20 p.m. Saturday and gave a bank teller a note demanding cash.
 
     The suspect was given an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot.
 
     The man of Litchfield, Minnesota, will remain at the Stearns County Correctional Center until he is extradited to Fargo.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An elderly woman from North Dakota who was identified by investigators as the first victim in a Jamaican lottery scam says she lost $300,000 and cashed in her insurance policy.
 
     Sanjay Williams is one of 32 defendants charged in a global case that allegedly involves at least 72 victims, most of them elderly. Several defendants have pleaded and others are awaiting extradition from Jamaica. Williams is the first person to go to trial.
 
     Eighty-six-year-old Edna Schmeets of Harvey, North Dakota, testified Monday that scammers told her not to tell anybody about the lottery until she collected her prize. She says she planned to give the money to her children.
 
     Defense attorney Charlie Stock told jurors it’s difficult to believe witnesses because a lot of them used fake names and IDs

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature has decided to take over operations of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn.
 
     Lawmakers in the House and Senate agreed Monday to spend just over $2 million to buy the center and its assets from the Lewis and Clark Fort Mandan Foundation.
 
     The Legislature also included $950,000 to operate the center over the next two years.
 
     The center opened in 1997. Officials say the foundation has had problems in recent years raising enough money to operate and pay for the facility.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 26-year-old Bismarck woman is dead after a single-car rollover in Burleigh County. The Highway Patrol says the woman failed to negotiate a curve on state Highway 1804 in foggy conditions Monday. Her car went into the ditch, struck an approach, because airborne, landed and rolled before coming to rest on its wheels.
 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Formal charges are pending against a Grand Forks man who authorities say crashed his vehicle into a house.
 
     The 26-year-old man allegedly crashed his pickup truck into two cars, a tree, a fence and then into the home shortly before 6 p.m. Monday. No one was hurt.
 
     The driver fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later. He was arrested on numerous charges including reckless endangerment and driving under suspension.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck woman faces charges on accusations she bit a 2-year-old girl under her care.
 
     Twenty-eight-year-old Jade Savior was charged Monday with felony child abuse in South Central District Court. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
 
     Bismarck police say they received a report from someone who said she saw Savior excessively spank and neglect the child. Authorities say they also found a visible bite mark on the child’s left arm.
 
     Savior is in custody at the Burleigh County Detention Center.
 
     It wasn’t immediately clear if she has an attorney.

 

CASSELTON, N.D. (AP) – Federal investigators have released hundreds of pages detailing the fiery 2013 oil train derailment near Casselton, North Dakota, that forced 1,400 to evacuate for several days. Interviews with the BNSF workers operating the two trains in the derailment are included in what the National Transportation Safety Board posted online. Everyone aboard both trains escaped unharmed. But just a couple minutes after conductor Pete Rigpl exited the oil train he looked back to see flames engulf the locomotive he had been in.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the GOP-led Legislature are at odds over how earnings should be budgeted from the state’s trust fund for oil taxes.
 
     The Legislature passed a measure this session that bars the governor from considering money from the fund’s principal when crafting budgets.
 
     Dalrymple vetoed the legislation but the House voted 67-23 Monday to override the veto. It now goes to the Senate.
 
     North Dakota voters approved the Legacy Fund in 2010. The fund gets 30 percent of the state’s oil and gas tax collections. None of the money can be spent until 2017, and only then if the Legislature decides by a two-thirds vote to dip into it.
 
     The fund is expected to top $3 billion this month.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Residents of North Dakota’s largest city are choosing a mayor.
 
     Acting Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney is squaring off against former city commissioner Brad Wimmer in Tuesday’s election.
 
     Mahoney took over the position when then-Mayor Dennis Walaker died in December after a battle with kidney cancer.
 
     Wimmer lost to Walaker in last June’s election.
 
      Voters also will decide a measure requiring a city commissioner to resign in order to run for mayor.

 

  WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota first lady Betsy Dalrymple is heading to Williston to promote her book.
 
     The book is titled, “Building a House, Making a Home: A History of the North Dakota Governor’s Residence.” It was unveiled in October.
 
     The current Governor’s Residence has stood since 1960. The prairie-style home is the second official residence that has been built for North Dakota’s governors. The original Governor’s Mansion was built in 1884 a few blocks south of the Capitol.
     The state Legislature last week approved a new $5 million home for North Dakota’s first family, with 20 percent to be funded by private donations.

MOTT, N.D. (AP) – A California man is accused of hunting crimes in southwestern North Dakota.
 
     Myron Rick, of San Diego, is accused of several violations including guiding without a license and exceeding a possession limit. Court documents do not list an attorney for him.
 
     Rick was caught last fall with more pheasants than legally allowed. He’s also accused of helping conceal unlawfully taken game.
 
     Authorities used two undercover hunters in the investigation.
 
     Rick is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in June. He could face more than three years in prison and $13,500 in fines if convicted.

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – One of professional wrestling’s most celebrated performers and promoters, Verne Gagne, has died at age 89.

Gene Okerlund, who was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame with Gagne in 2006, says his longtime friend died Monday in Minnesota.

WWE says Gagne turned professional in 1950 and won several regional championships before heading to the newly formed American Wrestling Association in 1960.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Gagne became a promoter and eventually became the sole owner of the AWA. He remained an active competitor until the early 1980s, holding the AWA World Heavyweight Championship 10 times between 1960 and 1981.

Okerlund calls Gagne one of the pioneers of professional wrestling who helped “put it on the map.”

     Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, at the stadium for a previously planned visit, said Tuesday night’s game between the Orioles and White Sox could be moved – possibly to Nationals Park in Washington – if safety continued to be an issue.

     NEW YORK (AP)- Deron (DEHR’-ihn) Williams rebounded from two dismal games with 35 points, and the Brooklyn Nets pulled out a 120-115 overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks to tie that series at two games apiece. Brook Lopez had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets.

 UNDATED (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers are still alive in the NBA playoffs. Damian Lillard made sure of that. Lillard scored 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Blazers rallied to beat Memphis 99-92 and avoid a four-game sweep by Memphis.

 UNDATED (AP)- In the NHL playoffs, the Washington Capitals advanced to play the New York Rangers by beating the Islanders 2-1 in Game 7 of that first round series.

It will be the Washington Capitals against the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

And Tampa Bay got two goals from Tyler Johnson and beat Detroit 5-2 to force a Game 7 Wednesday night to decide that first round series.
 
     CHICAGO (AP) – Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said goalie Corey Crawford will start Game 1 of the team’s second-round series against the Minnesota Wild. Crawford was shaky early in the Blackhawks’ six-game win over Nashville in the opening round and lost the starting job to backup Scott Darling. The Wild and Blackhawks will meet in the postseason for the third straight year.

 UNDATED AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals say ace Adam Wainwright is out for the season because of a torn left Achilles. Wainwright will have surgery later this week. Wainwright was hurt while batting Saturday in Milwaukee.
 
     This is the second major injury of Wainwright’s career. The right-hander missed the 2011 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

 

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Josh Hamilton is back with the Texas Rangers. The Los Angeles Angels wanted to get rid of him so much they are expected to pay most of the remaining $80.2 million on his contract. Hamilton, who has a history of drug and alcohol issues, never reported to the Angels this season after offseason right shoulder surgery.

BALTIMORE (AP) – Some fires are still smoldering in Baltimore today in the aftermath of looting, arson and violence following the funeral of Freddie Gray, the black man who died after being arrested by police. Some of the violence yesterday spread close to downtown and near the baseball stadium. There’s a state of emergency, and a curfew will take effect tonight. National Guard troops are on the streets. Police say they made 24 arrests and at least 15 officers were injured.
 
     GORKHA, Nepal (AP) – The injured are being ferried to clinics and supplies are being carried back to the most stricken and isolated areas of Nepal after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed thousands of people. Across central Nepal, including the capital Kathmandu, hundreds of thousands of people are still living in the open without clean water or sanitation. It rained heavily in the city today.
 
     KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – A massive landslide in a remote part of eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 52 people. The provincial governor in the area says roads to the region are snow covered. The area often experiences major slides when the snow starts to melt in spring.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – Supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage could get their first clues today from the Supreme Court justices as arguments are heard in a pair of cases. One concerns whether states can ban same-sex marriage. The other is whether states must recognize such unions from states where they are legal. Questions asked by the justices during arguments sometimes suggest which way they lean.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – Japan’s prime minister is coming to dinner at the White House tonight. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay) will work to strengthen economic ties while confronting stiff resistance to a massive new Pacific Rim trade deal. Abe’s visit takes a historic turn tomorrow. He’ll be the first Japanese prime minister to address a joint session of Congress.
