FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The sexual misconduct trial of a former North Dakota teacher of the year has ended with no verdict after the presiding judge was prompted to dismiss the jury following the medical emergency of a juror.
A female juror in the Aaron Knodel (kah-NOH’-dehl) trial was dismissed Wednesday after she was taken from the courthouse where the jury was deliberating to a hospital. The juror was disoriented and couldn’t recognize her sister at the hospital.
The 36-year-old West Fargo High School English teacher is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student over a period of several weeks in early 2009. He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of felony corruption or solicitation of a minor.
The prosecution could ask for a mistrial to try to put the case before a new jury. Prosecutors didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
Knodel’s attorney Robert Hoy says he hopes the prosecution decides against pursuing a new trial.
