Jamestown (CSi) Heavy rains drenched the Jamestown area this past weekend, starting with training thunderstorms Saturday evening, and continuing on Sunday with periods of heavy rain, followed on Sunday evening and overnight with snow, and sleet. Through Saturday & Sunday, the Weather Station at Jamestown Airport had recorded 5.29 inches of rain this weekend.

On Sunday a pump was running along 13th St NE Jamestown, to remove standing water from a parking lot. Water was standing in fields near the airport. In SE Jamestown, a tree came down blocking most of 9th Av SE in the 1500 block. The “spillway” on the James River near the oxbow, which had no water passing into the bypass channel just a few days ago, was running almost level.

LEC dispatchers also received calls Saturday evening about sewage backing up into some homes in southeast Jamestown.
Surface damage was noted at the base of the stadium hill (3rd Street Northeast, near the University of Jamestown football field). The asphalt buckled at the base of the hill, which may have been caused by a storm sewer failure there.”
Reports of water over the road on Sunday on N.D. Highway 9 in Courtenay and on Old Highway 10 between Jamestown and Spiritwood. Road crews were been dispatched to both locations Sunday afternoon.
At 7-a.m. Monday the James River gauge in Jamestown show the river level had dropped to about 5 and a half feet, compared to just over 7 feet at 7-p.m., on Sunday.
Before the heavy weekend rain the river level in Jamestown was maintaining three feet.
On Monday morning at 7am. the Sheyenne River at Valley City was at 7.56 feet, a rise of about a foot from Sunday at 7-a.m.

Thunderstorms between 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday resulted in rainfall accumulations of more than 1 inch per hour contributing to the nearly 5.4 inches Jamestown recorded officially as of 9 p.m. Sunday.
A record for daily maximum rainfall was broken on Sunday. As of 9 p.m. Sunday, 2.56 inches of rain had fallen in Jamestown, which breaks the old record in 1996.
