TRAC floorplan1Jamestown (CSi)  On Tuesday June 2, 2015, City of Jamestown voters approved a one percent city sales tax to support the proposed Two Rivers Activity Center (TRAC).

 

The unofficial vote tally posted after counting the ballots:

Yes: 1771

No: 1178

The Jamestown City Council will canvass the votes on Monday June 8, 2015.

Stutsman County CEO Casey Bradley said voter turnout at the Civic Center polls, throughout the day on Tuesday, was steady.

The ballot measure did not specify when the sales tax would start. The earliest it could begin is October 1, 2015. The one percent city sales tax will be in place until 2035 or until the project’s debt is retired

The $28.6 million first phase of the Two Rivers Activity Center is a “go.”

The 172,000-square-foot facility will house an aquatic center, a childcare facility, three basketball courts, a walking and jogging track, a weight training area and an indoor turf field under a dome.

TRAC will be located on land near Jamestown High School, with . half of the property, or, 7.5 acres, needed donated by Jamestown Public School in exchange for use of the facility in Jamestown school activities.

Jamestown Public Schools will trade an additional 7.5 acres to TRAC for a nearby parcel that Parks and Recreation plans to purchase from Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

A proposed second phase would expand the facility for a final estimated cost of $40 million.

In reaction to the vote. TRAC board member Mark Ukestad thanked those who voted to approve the one percent sales tax.

TRAC Board President Rachel Liechty says the vote was important to Jamestown’s future.

Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Rob Lech, who is also a member of the TRAC Board, said the vote indicates Jamestown residents are looking forward.
