Here is the latest North Dakota news from The Associated Press
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – The federal government won’t compensate ranchers and landowners over a planned burn that flared out of control more than two years ago and scorched over 16,000 acres in the Dakotas. Landowners affected by the Pautre (PAW’-tree) fire have filed $50 million in claims but Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Department of Agriculture determined the government is not liable.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Supreme Court won’t take up the case of a Fargo man. Matthew Nguyen (wihn) was arrested for marijuana possession in 2012 after police took a drug-sniffing dog into his apartment complex without a warrant. He had argued his privacy was invaded. But the state Supreme Court has ruled the search was legal.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Most of the tax and spending bills North Dakota lawmakers passed this year become law on Wednesday, including a change to a formula that’s used to distribute oil and gas tax revenue. It means more money for local governments to help them deal with the impact of the state’s energy boom.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Governor Jack Dalrymple and health officials have unveiled North Dakota’s new Mobile Medical Unit. It’s a rolling emergency room that could be sent in case of a disaster in an area where a regular hospital ER isn’t close by. It has space for 16 patients. North Dakota acquired the unit from Minnesota at no cost.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified the man whose body was found in the Red River near downtown Grand Forks Monday night.

The Grand Forks Police Department on Tuesday said the body is that of 25-year-old Aaron Pigeon of Badger, Minnesota. The body was found hours after authorities began searching the river for Pigeon, who was last seen leaving the Level 10 Bar in Grand Forks Saturday night.

Authorities launched a search of the Red River and nearby riverbanks Monday afternoon. They also conducted an extensive search and neighborhood canvas.

Here is the latest Minnesota news from The Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota students will be taking fewer statewide tests. The Legislature has cut the Minnesota Department of Education’s testing budget from $42 million in the last two-year cycle to $22 million for the next two years. Lawmakers repealed several high school tests and stopped funding for the ACT college entrance exam for juniors.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – A Minnesota man is one of 18 people being honored with a Carnegie Medal for heroism. Ryan Nelson of Eagan saved another man from a burning home in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in March of last year. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awards medals and cash several times a year.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Federal wildlife officials have rejected a petition from more than a dozen groups trying to get gray wolves reclassified as a threatened species list in most of the U.S. Gray wolves across most of the Lower 48 are classified as endangered, which is more protective than a threatened designation. Advocates hoped a change would pre-empt intervention from members of Congress who want to lift federal protections altogether. The wolves are already listed as threatened in Minnesota.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – National Weather Service forecasters say smoke from forest fires in northern Saskatchewan is drifting as far south as Tennessee.

The smoky skies could linger over much of the Midwest through Wednesday before the haze shifts toward the East.
