ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Police have identified the man fatally shot by a former CNN reporter at an Albuquerque motel as Tomorio Walton.

Chuck de Caro and his wife, Lynne Russell, both formerly with CNN, were in the room.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Tanner Tixier (tih-SHAY) says Walton, 27, had absconded from parole out of Memphis, Tennessee. He says police don’t know how long he had been in Albuquerque.

Russell, a former CNN anchor, says her husband and Walton exchanged gunfire Tuesday night after the man entered their room at a Motel 6 and tried to rob them.

Russell says Walton opened fire and struck de Caro three times. He returned fire, killing Walton.

Tixier on Thursday said the shooting is being investigated as a homicide.

Russell told the AP that de Caro was recovering at a hospital.
