Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office informs motorists that beginning today, Monday, August 3, 2015 – 8th Ave SW will be closed between 26th St SW and 37th St SE for utility work. It is anticipated the work will be completed within 2 – 3 business days. The utility work and anticipated street closure schedule are contingent upon weather conditions.

Motorists and other traffic should use extreme caution when entering road construction areas. The public should consider alternate routes if possible.

Also, Beginning today Monday, August 3, 2015 – The Oxbow area of the James River will be closed for approximately two – four days as needed during sewer utility repairs in the SE area.

This closure and utility work schedule is contingent upon weather conditions.

 
Jamestown  (CSi) District 12  Democratic State   Rep. Jessica Haak has been selected to be on a Human Trafficking Commission by Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. The 19 member Human Trafficking Commission was established during the last legislative session and has representation from state and local leadership, tribal agencies, law enforcement, victim advocates and is led by Attorney General Stenehjem.

Haak  says “I am honored to have been asked by Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem to be a member of the Human Trafficking Commission.  I worked alongside allies such as FUSE North Dakota and CAWS North Dakota, and across the aisle in a bipartisan effort with Senator Dever to provide funds for victims of human trafficking during the legislative session earlier this year. I look forward to continuing our work to end this deplorable crime.”

The commission is tasked with developing a comprehensive plan to provide victims with services, promote public awareness about human trafficking and victim remedies, coordinate training on human trafficking investigation a prosecution with the all law state and local law enforcement agencies. The commission is expected to have their first meeting this month.

This past legislative session, Haak was a cosponsor on several key pieces of human trafficking legislation, including the legislation that provides $1.25 million for victim’s services.

 

Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Education Association and the Valley City School District have ratified a one year contract agreement, at the school board’s Annual meeting.

The agreement includes increasing the base for incoming teachers by $1,500. That moves the starting salary to $37,206. Health insurance remains the same under the agreement, teachers lost two personal leave days.

Also at the annual meeting, Rick Ross was honored for his term on the school board and Rich Schuenman was sworn in as a new school board member.

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A toddler playing outside a home in Fargo was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle.
 
     The incident happened midday Sunday. Police Lt. Joel Vettel says the 20-month-old child was struck in or near an alley at the rear of the home. The child died at the scene.
 
     Vettel says authorities are treating the death as a “tragic accident” and that no charges are expected.
 
     Police did not immediately release the identity of the child or the SUV driver.

 

 KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a Killdeer man who died in a head-on collision in the western North Dakota oil patch.
 
     The Highway Patrol says a car driven by 26-year-old Anthony Miller crossed into the oncoming lane at the crest of a hill on state Highway 200 near Killdeer and collided with an oil tanker shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday.
 
     Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the oil tanker wasn’t hurt.

 

   KEENE, N.D. (AP) – The Highway Patrol has identified three people who died in a three-vehicle crash in the western North Dakota oil patch.
 
     Authorities say a car driven by an Arizona woman tried to pass a pickup Thursday night on a McKenzie County road, then hit the truck after noticing an oncoming vehicle and trying to get back into her original lane. The truck collided head-on with the oncoming sport utility vehicle.
 
     The SUV overturned in the ditch. Twenty-seven-year-old driver Adam Brown, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died at the scene. Two SUV passengers also died – 22-year-old Jerold Bailey, of Watford City, at the scene; and 30-year-old Jason Shelton, of Rigby, Idaho, at a Minot hospital.
 
     Another SUV passenger and one of the pickup’s two occupants were injured. The car’s driver wasn’t hurt.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grease buildup in ductwork from a fryer is cited as the cause of a weekend fire at the Simplot french fry plant in Grand Forks.
 
     The building was evacuated about 6:30 p.m. Saturday and no one was hurt. Firefighters who responded to the scene had the blaze on the roof extinguished in about 20 minutes.
 
     Investigators say the grease buildup in the ductwork ignited and flames traveled up through a vent in the roof, spreading to parts of the roof.
 
     There was no immediate word on the amount of damage.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A baby boy born prematurely has gone home after spending nearly a year at a Fargo hospital.
 
Trevor Frolek left Essentia Health on July 24, his 345th day at the hospital. He was born after a 23-week pregnancy, and weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces.
 
     Trevor was small enough that his father, Bo, was able to get his wedding ring around his foot. His treatment while in the hospital included surgeries on his heart and eyes.
 
     Trevor’s mother, Becky, says it’s “bittersweet” to the leave the hospital, and that it’s “a miracle” to see him come so far.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge in North Dakota says a man who law enforcement authorities arrested following a drug bust at a casino must remain in custody until he faces trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Miller has ordered the detention pending trial of 39-year-old Joseph Lopez Sandoval. A criminal complaint charges Sandoval with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Belcourt woman accused of pulling a clump of hair from the head of a 2-year-old child says she will plead guilty in federal court.
 
     Twenty-year-old Brooke Ann Davis was charged with child abuse for the May 15th incident. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
 
     Davis told authorities she was drinking the day of the incident and does not remember what happened.
 
     A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says six western North Dakota airports are getting nearly $10 million for improvements. The money from the U.S. Department of Transportation is slated for airports in Williston, Stanley, Tioga, Garrison, Dickinson and Mercer County. The Tioga airport is getting $5 million. The Garrison Municipal Airport is getting $2.7 million.
 
     BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Land Board has awarded more than $16 million in grants to schools and airports in the state’s oil-producing region. Officials say the grants are part of a program aimed at helping communities deal with the effects of rapid energy development. The Land Board is headed by Governor Jack Dalrymple.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Biomedical scientists at the University of North Dakota have received a $2 million boost for research that could lead to improvements of oral health in America.
 
     The grant from the National Institutes of Health is meant to study the problem of dry mouth or xerostomia, a result of decreased saliva flow from under-functioning salivary glands. Almost 9 million Americans have this condition with varying degrees of severity.
 
     Research has shown that chronic dry mouth significantly increases the risk of developing dental caries as well as other oral diseases.
 
     Doctor Brij Singh is one of two scientists at UND’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences who received the grant. Singh says their research will be “critical” to explore potential therapeutic interventions and strategies to treat salivary gland conditions.

 

 STURGIS, S.D. (AP) – Never-before-seen crowds are expected to ride into western South Dakota this week for the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
 
     The rally officially kicks off Monday and is famous for bawdy behavior.
 
     But authorities and bikers alike say there’s no indication there will be violence among outlaw clubs like that seen in May in Waco, Texas, where a shootout involving bikers and police left nine dead and more injured.
 
     Law enforcement agencies in Sturgis say they haven’t received intelligence that outlaw gangs are planning violence as an extension of the Waco shootings.
 
     A former Hells Angels chapter leader says it’s likely the gangs will work to keep Sturgis mellow because of the attention on Waco.
 
     Sturgis business owner Randy White says the rally is mostly a place for people to have fun.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Time is running out for North Dakota hunters to apply for a pronghorn hunting license.
 
     The state is making 410 licenses available in three hunting units this fall, up from 250 licenses in only one unit last year. The deadline for hunters to apply is Wednesday. Only North Dakota residents can apply.
 
     Pronghorn have been slowly rebounding after being decimated by three straight severe winters starting in 2008. Last year’s limited hunting season was the first since 2009.
 
     A Game and Fish Department survey this year of nearly 10,000 square miles of pronghorn range in the southwest of the state estimated the population at 5,500 animals. That’s up markedly from 3,600 in 2012.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s early Canada goose hunting season is set. The Game and Fish Department says the season will open August 15th. It will continue through September 7th in the Missouri River Zone and through September 15th in other areas of the state. The season has a limit of 15 geese daily and 45 in possession, the same as last year.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A baseball stadium in Williston is getting spruced up before teenage players arrive next summer for the Babe Ruth World Series.
 
Plans were unveiled Monday for renovations at Aafedt Stadium with an estimated cost of $110,000. Improvements include planting a row of trees, and flowers near first and third base lines. The work would be finished before the first snow this year.
 
     The committee for the event plans to pay for the improvements by selling 8-inch-by-8-inch bricks that can be engraved. Surplus funds could be used to fortify grandstands and improve fencing on the field.
 
     The newspaper says the event was last held in Williston in 2013.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Twins will place pitcher Tommy Milone on the 15-day disabled list with a mild left elbow strain. Milone complained of pain following his Friday start in which he gave up four runs to the Seattle Mariners in six innings. The left-hander is 5-3 with a 3.76 ERA in 14 starts this season.

     LONG POND, Pa. (AP) – Matt Kenseth won the Sprint Cup race at Pocono when Kyle Busch ran out of fuel on the final lap in an attempt to earn his fourth straight win.  Busch and Joey Logano were trying to conserve fuel late in the race in an effort capture the win, but Logano went empty with three laps to go and Busch watched helplessly as Kenseth tracked him down and roared by. Brad Keselowski finished second with Jeff Gordon third.

     LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) – Graham Rahal (RAY’-hahl) won the IndyCar race in his home state of Ohio and made up considerable ground on series leader Juan Pablo Montoya with two events remaining in the season.
 
     Rahal held off Justin Wilson on the final restart of the 203-mile race at Mid-Ohio. Wilson ended up finishing second, 3.4 seconds behind. 
 
     Montoya finished 11th. He held a 42-point lead over Rahal heading into the race, but it’s now down to only nine points.

 

GOLF…

 GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Troy Merritt has earned his first PGA Tour win at the Quicken Loans National near Washington, DC. The 29-year old closed out a 4-under 67 with a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to wind up at 18 under par. Runner-up Rickie Fowler finished three shots back after shooting a 69.
 
     TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) – Top-ranked Inbee Park closed with a 7-under 65 to win the Women’s British Open and become the seventh golfer to capture four different majors.  The LPGA is calling it a career Grand Slam, but Park hasn’t won the Evian Championship since it became a major in 2013. Park has now won seven majors and six of the last 14.
 
     BLAINE, Minn. (AP) – Kenny Perry successfully defended his title in the Champions Tour’s 3M Championship with a final round 4-under 68. Perry’s 18-under total was four shots better than Bernhard Langer, Kevin Sutherland and Scott Dunlap.

     OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) – American Pharoah turned on the speed in the stretch and easily won the million-dollar Haskell Invitational in his first race since sweeping the Triple Crown. With a record crowd of 60,983 cheering him at Monmouth Park, American Pharoah came out of the final turn with a clear lead and cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory without urging from jockey Victor Espinoza. Sent off at odds of 1-10, American Pharoah became the shortest price in Haskell history, returning $2.20 for a $2 win bet.
 

SWIMMING…

 KAZAN, Russia (AP) – American teenager Katie Ledecky has improved her own world record in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the swimming world championships.
 
     The 18-year-old Ledecky completed the marathon-like race in 15 minutes, 27.71 seconds – shaving 0.65 seconds off the mark she set at last year’s Pan Pacific championships in Australia.
 
     The swim came during morning heats Monday. She’ll have a chance to improve it again in Tuesday’s final.
 
     It’s the fourth time Ledecky has broken the record in the 1,500. She also holds world marks in the 400 and 800 free.

 LOWER LAKE, Calif. (AP) – Thousands of California homes remain threatened today as some 21 major fires burn in the state. Fire officials have called for thousands of evacuations in Northern California where the largest blaze is now 84 square miles. Wildfires are also burning in Washington and Oregon as the West Coast suffers from the effects of drought and summer heat.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is taking aim at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mandating even steeper cuts from U.S. power plants than previously expected. The tweaks are being unveiled today at the White House. Immediate lawsuits are expected from many states as well as the utility industry.
 
     DOHA, Qatar (AP) – The six-member bloc of Sunni-ruled Gulf Arab nations is getting a pitch today in support of the Iran nuclear deal from Secretary of State John Kerry in a meeting of foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The members fear Shiite Iran’s increasing assertiveness in the region and the implications of the agreement.
 
     ATHENS, Greece (AP) – It’s an inauspicious day for Greece’s main stock index, which plunged more than 22 percent in its first day of trading in five-weeks. Greek bank stocks suffered the most, hitting or nearing the daily trading limit of a 30 percent loss. Greece is currently in intense negotiations with bailout lenders in an effort to negotiate the terms of a massive new rescue package in the next two weeks.
 
     JERUSALEM (AP) – The National Library of Israel will soon make one of the world’s oldest surviving Hebrew bibles, dating back more than 1,000 years, available online. Aviad Stollman, the library’s chief of collections, says the Gaster Bible will go online as part of a project to digitize all of the 3,200 rare Hebrew manuscripts currently at the British Library. The British Library collection is considered one of the largest and most significant in the world.
