Jamestown, ND (WDAY TV) – A home invasion in Jamestown turned into a nightmare for the homeowner. The homeowner shot the intruder. Police shot his dog.

Police were called to a home around 12:17 a.m. The homeowner says everything happened within five minutes.

Delmonty Jones, “It was just so crazy. It happened so fast. I don’t even know what happened, it happened so fast. All I know is somebody was in my house that wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Delmonty Jones, the owner of the house on 1st Avenue North, says he was just getting back from a business meeting when he heard a loud noise.

Jones, “I heard this crash. It sounded like a window, but I guess it was him kicking the door in. He came in. He head butted me.”

During the confrontation, Jones says he was able to grab his handgun and shoot the intruder.

Lt. Justin Blinsky/Jamestown Police, “He’s in the Fargo hospital at this time. We believe that the injuries were non-life-threatening.”

Lt. Blinsky, “It’s not taken lightly when you’re using that amount of force and so that’s part of the investigation.”

After the police arrived, Jones was handcuffed and taken outside. That’s when his says he dog came out of the home and someone from the sheriff’s office shot it.

Jones: “He (the dog) didn’t even go for the police officer. He was going for the police’s dog. The Sheriff’s dog. He wasn’t even bothering him. You know he could’ve tazed my dog, but instead he shot my dog. ”

The dog was taken to the vet and put to sleep later Friday morning. Jones says he was very pleased with how the police handled everything up to that point.

Jones, “He was everybody’s family dog and everybody loved Suge. It’s just, Wow. Today’s a sad day for me.”

Police say charges against the intruder and possibly the homeowner could be filed early next week.
