BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp has come out in favor of the Iran nuclear deal that helps preserve a top foreign policy achievement for President Barack Obama.

The North Dakota Democrat’s declaration Thursday gave Democrats 37 votes – or three more than the 34 votes necessary to sustain Obama’s promised veto of legislation aimed at blocking the deal.

Republicans unanimously oppose the deal that aims to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

Heitkamp says the deal is the best chance to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and keep America safe.
