Otter Tail Customer Service Manager, Jeff Hoff in Jamestown says, at 1:12 p.m., a high profile vehicle snagged a line on a power pole taking it down, falling northward, with lines across the road.

Law enforcement was on the scene diverting traffic around the downed power lines.

Later in the afternoon,  a second  pole fell over, as a result of the previous damage.   Law enforcement is investigating the incident.  Anyone with information about the vehicle or equipment that struck the line should contact Jamestown Police.

Hoff says the power was off in a section of Northwest Jamestown from around downtown, into the Fort Seward area, from about 1:12 – p.m., to 1:35-p.m. The power outage affected 830 customers. All affected areas near Fort Seward had power restored late Thursday afternoon.

Otter Tail crews were installing the two new poles and re-stringing the lines, which was expected to be completed by later Thursday.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says Luke Meiers was killed in the August 28th afternoon wreck on Frontage Road a block south of Main Street after the SUV hit a Canadian Pacific rail car. The crash partially derailed the car and came to rest under its belly.

ALEXANDER, N.D. (AP) – A 28-year-old McKenzie County sheriff’s deputy pulled from his burning department sport utility vehicle following a crash with a semi-truck has been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Deputy Chris Cloud was on his first day of patrol after completing field training Wednesday morning when he slowed to make a U-turn to go after a speeding vehicle. The SUV was rear-ended by a semi on Highway 200 and the vehicle burst into flames.

Cloud was airlifted to Bismarck for treatment, and he has since been transferred to the Mayo Clinic.

The truck driver was not injured.

Friends and loved ones have set up an online fundraiser for the deputy and family. The group had raised more than $11,000 by Thursday afternoon.

Feist was ordered to forfeit more than $8,600 that was seized when he was arrested in June 2014.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A northeastern North Dakota farmer charged with terrorizing law enforcement officials in 2011 has been acquitted.

Defense attorney Mark Friese says a jury in Grand Forks found Rodney Brossart, of rural Lakota, not guilty on one count of felony terrorizing on Wednesday.

Prosecutors accused Brossart of threatening law enforcement officials in June of 2011 who came to his property look for missing cattle.

A jury in 2013 found Brossart guilty of terrorizing and misdemeanor charges of preventing arrest and failing to comply with state laws on wandering cattle. The North Dakota Supreme Court in January threw out his terrorizing conviction, citing a mistake in jury instructions.

Friese says he and his co-counsel requested the case not be tried again, but prosecuted successfully sought a retrial.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp has come out in favor of the Iran nuclear deal that helps preserve a top foreign policy achievement for President Barack Obama.

The North Dakota Democrat’s declaration Thursday gave Democrats 37 votes – or three more than the 34 votes necessary to sustain Obama’s promised veto of legislation aimed at blocking the deal.

Republicans unanimously oppose the deal that aims to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

Heitkamp says the deal is the best chance to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and keep America safe.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A member of the state Board of Higher Education says he mulling over a measure that would refund fees to Williston State College students.

Some lawmakers were surprised to learn that the college in the North Dakota oil patch raised its mandatory fees by nearly 60 percent and its room and board by more than 25 percent. Williston State officials say the Legislature’s decision to cap tuition is a major factor.

Board member Don Morton, of Fargo, says he plans to propose a motion at the next board meeting that addresses fee increases.

North Dakota University System Chancellor Mark Hagerott says it’s a “dynamic situation” because the school is worried about maintaining its bond rating. But he says the system doesn’t want to give the impression that it’s circumventing lawmakers.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A group in Minot wants to reduce the size of the city council from 14 members to five.

The  group (hash)MakeMinot expects to be circulating petitions within the next few days.

Spokesman Shaun Sipma says the coalition is advocating for choice and accountability, as the five members would be elected at large rather than from wards.

Sipma says 25 council seats have been on the ballot in the past three election cycles. And of those 25, only six had contested races.

Council president Mark Jantzer says residents have a right to consider changes in their government and elected officials need to listen. But he says the city should proceed carefully as every system has its strengths and weaknesses.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – A year ago, new Wyoming coach Craig Bohl vowed to field a team that was “Cowboy tough” and disciplined.

In year two, Bohl is talking about adding speed and athleticism.

When Wyoming hosts Football Championship Subdivision opponent North Dakota on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium, Cowboy fans will see some familiar names playing different roles, more than a dozen freshmen and a new quarterback.

It’s all part of the effort to bring more speed and athleticism to the field.

Cameron Coffman will be making his first start at quarterback for Wyoming after transferring from Indiana.

Bohl says playing more athletic freshmen will be a part of his goal of continual improvement in the team. Another part is moving some players to new positions to improve speed on defense.
