Valley City (CSi VCSU Newsletter) As a service learning project, students in Katie Woehl’s VCSU Abnormal Psychology class are helping to organize this year’s Out of the Darkness Walk, a fundraiser through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
The AFSP has two categories of walks: community walks and campus walks. For the past several years Valley City has had a community walk; however, because of the hard work of our students last year, we were asked to make our local walk a campus walk. VCSU will be the first and only campus in North Dakota to have a campus walk, and we’re excited about the opportunity to host such an important event for our community! The students have taken on the challenge and are working very hard to make this year’s walk a success.
Since this is now a campus walk, we would really like to see participation from as many members of the campus as possible. You can participate in a variety of ways:
- Consider taking part in the walk itself on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the football field. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the walk, which will take you through campus and parts of downtown Valley City, begins at noon. You can walk as an individual or form a team. Register yourself as a participant at afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=3664, and you can use your individual link to collect donations.
- Donate to our group’s fundraising efforts at afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=803045. All proceeds from our Valley City State Walk stay in our our local community and provide suicide prevention services, trainings for law enforcement/teachers/etc., and support services for those affected by suicide.
If you have any questions about how to participate or donate, please contact Katie Woehl (kathryn.woehl@vcsu.edu, 845-7316).
