FARGO, N.D. (AP) – No one was hurt in a fire that caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to an apartment building in Fargo.

Firefighters responded to the building about 4:30 a.m. Friday after a report of smoke in a hallway, and discovered a bed on fire in one of the apartments. They extinguished the blaze in a matter of minutes.

The building was evacuated, but all tenants were able to return after smoke was removed from the building.

Investigators determined an improperly disposed cigarette caused the fire.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Flaxton man has been sentenced to spend five years in prison after pleading guilty to raping a girl in Burke County.

Michael Hardaway will begin serving the time after finishing another five-year sentence for providing methamphetamine to the girl. He started serving that sentence in May after pleading guilty to endangering a child.

Hardaway is in his early 40s. Prosecutors say he had sex with the girl in April 2013. He could have faced life in prison under the initial charge against him. Prosecutors say they offered a plea deal to avoid putting the victim through a trial.

With credit for time served, Hardaway will serve about 10 years in prison before he’s eligible to be released.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A jury has found an Arizona man guilty for his role in one of the state’s largest heroin busts.

Charles Ahumada, of Tucson, Arizona, was charged with two counts, including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin. His trial wrapped up Thursday.

Authorities say the 56-year-old Ahumada was a passenger in a car that was pulled over on Interstate 94 near Bismarck in December. Authorities say there was 4 1/2 pounds of heroin valued at $2.5 million hidden in the trunk.

The driver of the vehicle, 48-year-old Frank Villa, of Tempe, Arizona, has pleaded guilty. He is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 4.

Ahumada is set to be sentenced on Jan. 11. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Investigators say a gay man who reported being the victim of a hate crime at a University of North Dakota fraternity made up the story and actually instigated the fight.

Police recommended charges against 18-year-old Haakon Gisvold but prosecutors declined, saying  a conviction would be unlikely.

Gisvold told police in early September that he was the victim of homophobic taunting and an assault at the Lambda Chi Alpha house. He said he was called anti-gay slurs, choked and stripped of his clothes while attending a party.

Authorities say their monthlong investigation that included 150 witnesses concluded there was no evidence of a hate crime, and that Gisvold instigated a fight.

The Associated Press left a message with Gisvold’s father seeking comment. It was not immediately returned.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Representatives of North Dakota’s most successful companies say it can be challenging to recruit workers to the state, but it’s getting easier to keep them.

The state has been trying to manage the largest job growth in the nation in the last decade. Business leaders who attended Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s economic summit in Fargo Thursday took turns reeling off the number of job openings at their companies.

David Batcheller, president and chief operating officer at Appareo in Fargo, says his company has grown from “five stupid college kids in a research park office” to 190 people. It has doubled in size every two years.

Batcheller says Appareo attracts and keeps young workers by making their jobs challenging and rewarding. He also says the company also likes to recruit husband-and-wife teams.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota is marking the completion of an $11.4 million project to expand and renovate its law school.

UND scheduled a Friday afternoon dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The 2013 Legislature approved funding for the project. It’s only the second major upgrade to the law school in its more than century of existence.

School of Law Dean Kathryn Rand says the project will enhance the educational experience for students.

In sports…

Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown has unveiled plans for a proposed $14 million, 49,000 square-foot arena, on campus.

A generous donation from the late Harold Newman launched the project, part of a $60 million campaign initiated by the University in 2013.

The new arena plans to include a training facility, training tables for athletes, treadmills and stationary bikes.

Newman Arena will have 2,000 seats with room for overflow.

After the arena opens, the Hansen Center on the UJ campus will be converted into a lower level dining area and gathering spot for students.

Other possible facilities at the area may include a bowling area or indoor theater. An exterior addition of an ice rink for wintertime and sand volleyball area may added as well.

A bell will be constructed and after each Jimmie win, the bell will be rung that may be heard all over town.

Construction may start in the spring of 2016, and is estimated to be completed in about 15 to 18 months.

Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown concluded the fall baseball schedule undefeated with an 8-0, record nipping VCSU, 5-4, in comeback fashion at Jack Brown stadium, Wednesday.
