Baylee was not wearing a seatbelt, and Maci was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.

Arrangements at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel

Jamestown (CSi)  The community dinner provided by Concordia Lutheran Church in Jamestown on Thanksgiving Day served a total of 648 meals, with 326 delivered and 322 meals served in house.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The postal distribution of the newly revised “Are You Prepared” booklets
that was expected to occur late last week was delayed due to a number of
production and distribution issues.  Some of the booklets in the initial
print order were of poor quality and had to be reprinted.  The reprinting
process added several days to the distribution time line.

It’s now anticipated that the majority of the booklet distribution will
occur Friday and Saturday after the Thanksgiving holiday.  The 6″ X 9″
booklet will be mailed in an envelope with the return address of the
Stutsman County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).  We ask everyone
to look at the return address before possibly discarding a very important
resource.

The revised “Are You Prepared” booklet is a project developed by the
Stutsman County LEPC and replaces the original booklet, with the
candy-striped cover page, distributed in 2007.  The primary purpose of the
booklet is to provide Stutsman County residents information regarding
actions that can be taken to save lives, reduce injury and protect property
in the event of an emergency or disaster.

If for some reason, an individual or business does not receive a copy of the
booklet in the mail, hard copies will be available at the Stutsman County
Emergency Management and Central Valley Health District offices.  In
addition, on-line versions are available on the Stutsman County Emergency
Management and Central Valley Health District websites.

The “Are You Prepared” booklet project was paid for with a Homeland Security
Planning grant.

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown City Engineer, Reed Schwartzkoph says, weather permitting, as early as Monday, November 30, 2015, the gates on the Ice House Dam will be “opened” to allow water levels in the rivers to drop to facilitate some City Storm Water Utility Inspections, Repairs and River Bank Survey work. Once these activities are finished, within the following 2 to 4 weeks, the gates will again be “closed” if the weather permits, allowing the water levels in the river to raise.

Along with the forecasted warmer than normal temperatures over the winter, these adjustments to the river levels may affect ice thicknesses and ice integrity/stability as the winter progresses.

The public is therefore advised to exercise caution around the rivers this winter and avoid allowing people and animals on the river ice for the duration of the winter.

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Downtown Association President, Lynn Lambrecht says due to some issues with getting lights on the Community Christmas Tree this year, the ceremony that was planned was cancelled, due to the unavailability of the fire department’s ladder truck for decorating.

However, Northern Tree Service, placed the lights Tuesday afternoon and the switch was flipped.

She adds, since the lights have already been turned on and in the interest of people getting ready for the holiday and spending time with family, JDA Ambassador Charlie Kourajian and Lynn decided to forego the actual ceremony.

The JDA apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Jamestown (CSi) As Jamestown Regional Medical Center gears up to offer the Jamestown community another round of the annual New Year, New You community wellness challenge, we would like to share the outstanding results from our 2015 NYNY challenge.

An impressive 41% were first-time participants with 94% planning to participate in future NYNY events. Each of the 15 healthy lifestyle behaviors discussed showed improvement from the pre-survey data to the post-survey data. 52% of the participants had a weight loss goal and a whopping 445.4 pounds were lost over the 8 week challenge! It was identified that busy work schedules (62.04%) and time demands of family members (42.34%) are the top obstacles to maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

In the 2015 challenge, 83% were aware of a healthy blood pressure, 73% were aware of a healthy cholesterol reading, and 60% were aware of a healthy blood glucose reading. Less than 30% of participants were aware of an appropriate BMI and less than 60% were aware of the minimum physical activity recommendations for the general public. On a positive note, the percent of participants who reached the minimum physical activity recommendation increased from 34% pre-challenge to 72% post-challenge.

Many other great comparison improvements were identified through the challenge’s surveys. JRMC is very pleased with participant successes:

  • General health rating of Very Good or Excellent increased from 34% to 55%
  • Consumption of 3 or more fruit servings increased from 37% to 73%
  • Consumption of 3 or more vegetable servings increased from 40% to 71%
  • Outside the home meal preparation/consumption decreased from 68% to 57%
  • Experience of regular tension decreased from 40% to 20%
  • Experience of sleeplessness decreased from 45% to 27%
  • Increase from 47% to 65% in respondents choosing Rarely or Never in answer to feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope with the pace of life

JRMC invites all community members to participate in our 2016 challenge, which starts Monday January 11th, 2016 and runs through Sunday, March 6th. We will focus on interpersonal wellness, social wellness, and emotional wellness. Weekly focuses will include topics such as quality time, gratitude, affirmations, kindness, relaxation, generosity.

Past mainstays of the annual NYNY challenge will be the underlying drivers of daily lifestyle choices to include physical activity, heart healthy nutrition, sleep, and hydration. We will return to highlighting an aspect of the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 and the importance of knowing your health numbers.

Registration will be open December 1st through the first week of the 2016 New Year, New You challenge. Please visit www.jrmcnd.com/nyny for details. Join us in becoming the healthy difference.

Jamestown (CSi)  United Blood Services announces a community blood drive to stock hospital shelves for this year’s flu season. During the fall and winter flu season, we encourage healthy people to keep their donation appointments since many regular donors find themselves fighting the flu bug themselves.

If you are feeling well, we encourage you to donate at the JRMC community blood drive. This is also a perfect time of year for “first time donors” to help patients who are counting on a volunteer like you to provide the lifesaving blood that they need. Your donation will make a difference for those who are fighting cancer, having a surgery, or facing an emergency.

The next opportunity to donate blood in your community will be on December 1st at Jamestown Regional Medical Center from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Contact Katie Mittleider at (701) 952-4814 to make an appointment.

If you have received the flu shot there’s no impact on your ability to donate blood, you can receive the shot and donate blood that same day.

To save time, donors can now fill out their Health History Questionnaire online at www.unitedbloodservices.org the day of their donation. To donate blood, volunteers must be at least 16 years old (16 year old donors need a minor donor permit which is available online) and be in good health.

Valley City (CSi) The elevation of Devils Lake has dipped below 1450. The outlets were shut off on November 9.

State Water Commission spokesman Jon Kelch says the outlets dropped the lake by one foot and evaporation lowered the lake by another foot for a total of 2 feet in 2015.

Kelsch adds the state water commission will hold discussions concerning where the lake elevation should be before shutting down one or two Devils Lake outlets next spring or summer.

Kelsch says once the lake elevation reaches 1446 on the east side that outlet will shut off and if the lake level reaches 1445 feet the west end outlet will shut down until the lake rises above those elevations.

Carrington (CSi) Sheriff  Ian Mattice, is warning Foster County residents of a scam making the rounds involving the department.

He says a male individual is calling residents and falsely representing himself as a Foster County Deputy. The male says that there are current warrants out for people and that if they pay him the bond money, the department will not have to come and get them.

Mattice says this is a scam because Sheriff Office’s doesn’t handle with warrants in that manner.

The caller is identifying themselves as Deputy Mark Hallowell or Captain Halloway.

Anyone receive a call similar to that should hang up and contact the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office immediately.

The Foster County Sheriff’s Department may also be contacted for a futher explanation.

Valley City (CSi)   CHI Mercy Health Foundation is excited to announce the upcoming 20th Annual Festival of Trees to be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Valley City Eagles Club.

With the support of individuals and area businesses, the CHI Mercy Health Foundation raised over $20,000 at last year’s event to purchase new equipment for the Physical Therapy Department! Funds raised at this year’s Festival of Trees will go towards purchasing new equipment for their Physical Therapy department. This year, they  are raising funds to purchase a new (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), also known as a DEXA Scanner, as their patients’ health depends on accurate diagnosis and preventive treatment. Currently, they provide over 400 DEXA scans per year at the hospital to diagnose osteoporosis. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, as well as structural changes, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break. DEXA is also effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.

This year’s event will be extra special as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Trees Gala!  The event will be upstairs at the Eagles Club this year for a served dinner and a live performance by Kat Perkins! The event will also include a Silent and Live Auction, Quilt Raffle, Deluxe Trip Raffle (valued at $5000), Wine Pull, and a Designer Purse (to be filled with an undetermined amount of cash!) featured on the live auction. New this year will be a Mystery Duffle Raffle with a chance to win one of three Duffle Bags filled with “Mystery” items totaling $250 each! The Hospital Staff create and donate many beautiful gift baskets for the Silent Auction along with terrific donations from local businesses. The Live Auction will feature uniquely decorated live and artificial Christmas trees, wreaths, center pieces, and mantle pieces. Other Live Auction items will be a New England Shrimp Boil Experience for a lucky bidder and 7 of their friends, a John Deere Kids Pedal Tractor, a stunning original canvas print from Dutton’s Valley Gallery, and a pair of Vikings Tickets!

Tickets are $50 per person and will go on sale Monday, October 26, at 10:00am in the Mercy Hospital lobby. Seats are assigned and will be limited to 400 tickets this year. The doors (and silent auction) will open at 5:00pm, dinner served at 6:00pm, the live auction begins at 7:30pm, Kat Perkins Holiday Concert at 8:00pm, and we’ll resume the live auction at 9:30pm.

Please contact Stephanie Mayfield in the CHI Mercy Health Foundation office (direct #845-6557 or stephaniemayfield@catholichealth.net) with any questions you have regarding the event.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – It’s a chilly start to the holiday shopping season in North Dakota.

Temperatures were in the low teens, single digits and in the west below zero as shoppers headed out to the stores on Black Friday to land some deals.

The day after Thanksgiving is generally considered the kickoff to the holiday shopping season. It’s typically the biggest shopping day of the year – the National Retail Federation expects nearly 100 million people to shop.

Valerie Bartsh traveled to Bismarck from Watford City with her two adult daughters. She tells The Associated Press: “It’s mother-daughter time, and it’s savings time.”

Some stores opened Thursday night, including the Sears store in Bismarck. Store manager Chris Ott told KXMB-TV that shoppers were mainly after tools, and washers and dryers.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One person was injured in a fire that caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to a Fargo apartment building.

Fire officials say the blaze late Thursday afternoon started in a basement apartment, and firefighters quickly put it out.

The two occupants of the apartment made it outside on their own. One was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

None of the other apartment units were occupied.

Officials say fire damage was confined to the basement apartment, but there was smoke damage on the building’s second and third floors. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

ARGUSVILLE, N.D. (AP) – No one was hurt in a Thanksgiving Day standoff north of Fargo in which shots were fired.

Cass County sheriff’s deputies and the Red River Valley Swat Team responded to a farm home east of Argusville about 8 p.m. Thursday.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Keenan Zundel says a suicidal man in the house fired several shots that did not appear to be aimed at anyone. The man surrendered about midnight and was taken to a Fargo hospital to be evaluated.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Defense attorneys in Fargo who have argued that unwarranted searches with drug-sniffing dogs are unconstitutional and unfair to lower-income people say an 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling earlier this week backs their premise.

The 8th Circuit says it was wrong for police in Iowa to bring a drug dog within inches of a resident’s apartment window without first obtaining a warrant. The court threw out the evidence.

Fargo lawyers who have had appeals on warrantless sniffs rejected by the state Supreme Court say the opinion shows flaws in the law that allows drug dogs in apartments and condos without warrants, but not in private homes.

Cass County State’s Attorney Birch Burdick says he hasn’t had time to review the 8th Circuit ruling and could not comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The public is getting a chance to weigh in on designs for a new $5 million home for North Dakota’s first family.

Three options will be presented for public input at 1 p.m. Monday at the state Capitol.

A committee is seeking to raise $1 million in private donations for the new governor’s residence.

The Legislature in April approved construction of a new governor’s home, stipulating that 20 percent of its cost must be funded by private donations.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The state Agriculture Department’s annual Pesticide and Fertilizer Forum is set Monday in Fargo.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the forum brings together pesticide and fertilizer users, applicators, dealers, manufacturers and personnel from the North Dakota State University Extension Service to discuss major issues and concerns related to agricultural chemicals.

Goehring says it’s also a chance for people to talk about how the Agriculture Department can better meet their needs. Department officials will lead discussions on a variety of topics including pesticide trends, anhydrous ammonia issues and worker protection laws.

The event gets under way at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on 13th Avenue South. It’s open to the public. It coincides with the annual Ag Expo in Fargo, giving participants the opportunity to take in both events.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Mountain lion hunting during the early season in North Dakota’s Zone 1 closed on Sunday with six cats killed, under the quota of 14.

The state Game and Fish Department says the late season in Zone 1 began Monday and runs through next March or until the quota of seven cats is filled.

The late season allows lions to be pursued with dogs, in addition to other legal methods.

The late season quota in Zone 1 filled early last year, so hunters are advised to check updates on the Game and Fish website, www.gf.nd.gov .

Zone 1 roughly encompasses the southwest and west central parts of the state. There is no quota in Zone 2, the rest of the state. Lion hunting there is open through the end of March.

 NATIONAL  FOOTBALL  LEAGUE

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – The Carolina Panthers are 11-0 after returning two of Tony Romo’s three first-half interceptions for touchdowns in a 33-14 win at Dallas. Romo went to the locker room at the end of the third quarter with another possible left collarbone injury after he was sacked. Kurt Coleman and Luke Kuechly (KEEK’-lee) scored on interceptions, Cam Newton ran for a TD and Graham Gano (gah-NOH’) hit four field goals for the NFC’s only unbeaten team.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The Green Bay Packers lost for the fourth time in five games as Jay Cutler threw for 200 yards and a touchdown in the Chicago Bears’ 17-13 victory at Lambeau Field. The Bears scored their touchdowns in the second quarter on Cutler’s three-yard pass to Zah Miller and Jeremy Langford’s one-yard run. Aaron Rodgers threw for 202 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the 7-4 Packers, who had first-and-goal at the Chicago 8 in the final minute before dropping a half-game behind the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The Packers unveiled Brett Favre’s name and retired No. 4 on the stadium facade Thursday night at halftime against the Chicago Bears. Favre thanked his former teammates and fans as the crowd roared its approval. The sides had a messy divorce in 2008 with Favre waffling about retirement.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Brett Favre says he was never as good as the man who replaced him at quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Favre says Aaron Rodgers will break all of his good records but that he’ll hang on to his bad ones. Favre lauded Rodgers while speaking at a charity event Thursday.

DETROIT (AP) – Matthew Stafford threw for five touchdowns and the Detroit Lions picked up their third straight win by trouncing the Philadelphia Eagles 45-14. Stafford was 27 of 38 for 337 yards and no interceptions as the Lions dropped the Eagles to 4-7. Calvin Johnson had eight receptions for 93 yards and three touchdowns for the 4-7 Lions, who held DeMarco Murray to 30 yards on 14 carries.

In world and national news…

UNDATED (AP) – It’s 2 a.m., and 23-year-old Gloria Romero and her friend are waking up to head to the beauty store Sephora in New York City. That’s been the scene across the country today, as shoppers try to score Black Friday deals by getting a jump on everyone else. The National Retail Federation estimates that about 135.8 million consumers will be shopping during the four-day weekend, compared with 133.7 million last year. The group also expects sales during this month December of this year to be up 3.7 percent from the last two months of last year.

CHICAGO (AP) – Not just holiday shoppers will be taking to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile today. Also planned is a protest over the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by a white police officer. The black teen was shot 16 times. Protesters say they’ll be marching down part of Michigan Avenue, in the heart of Chicago’s famed retail district.

PARIS (AP) – France is honoring those killed in the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris. A ceremony was held today during which the names and ages of the 130 killed were read. French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH’ oh-LAWND’) told mourners that he would do everything to destroy what he called the “army of fanatics” responsible.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – The Dutch government has brokered a deal with municipal and provincial authorities to house about 14,000 migrants who’ve been granted refugee status. The aim is to provide housing for people granted asylum by Dutch authorities so that they can move out of temporary centers and free up room for more migrants pouring into the Netherlands each month. Meanwhile, Turkish state media say six children drowned when boats carrying migrants to Greece sank in two incidents off the Turkish coast.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – A Christmas tree in downtown Canberra (KAN’-behr-uh), Australia, has 518,838 twinkling lights. And it’s set the Guinness World Record for the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree. Lawyer and businessman David Richards brought together a team of volunteers to erect the dazzling display on the 72-foot tree. Richards creates such Christmas extravaganzas to raise money for Canberra’s Sudden Infant Death Syndrome charity, SIDS and Kids, and he has set previous records for Christmas displays.
