Jamestown (CSi) A Glenfield, couple are the proud parents of a baby girl, the first baby to be born in 2016 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Jeslin Elaine Stangeland was born at 8:10 a.m. Saturday. The daughter of Amy and Lucas Stangeland, she weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

“It was really fast,” said Amy Stangeland, from her hospital room on Sunday.

“Everybody is healthy and that is the main thing,” said Lucas Stangeland about mother and baby.

Jeslin was due January 11th , but Amy had already come into JRMC twice with contractions prior to making a third 45-mile trip, arriving at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. She said she knew the third trip was going to be it this time.

 

Valley City (CSi) CHI Mercy Health has partnered with Whitney Sleep Diagnostics and Consultants to offer a high quality, AASM accredited sleep medicine program in Valley City.

Valley City (CSi) Officials with the Griggs/Barnes County Joint Water Resource District Boards will hold a public hearing, on January 14, 2016, concerning the establishment of the Silver Creek drain, at the Hannaford Wildlife Club, at 7-p.m.

Then, another special meeting will be held on January 25th at 4pm at the board meeting room at the Barnes County Highway Department offices northwest of Valley City, where ballots will be counted, concerning the Silver Creek drain.

Under the plan a portion of Rose Slough would be drained into the Sheyenne River. Barnes County Water Resource District board member, Dale Jorrison says culverts would be used to drain water.

He says the estimated cost is about $750,000. The cost share ratio would be a 60/40 split with Barnes County picking up the greater share.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Law enforcement authorities in Grand Forks say a 19-year-old man was found dead in a vehicle parked on the University of North Dakota campus.
 
     Sgt. Danny Weigel with the university’s police department says an officer found the unresponsive man around 12:23 p.m. Saturday. Weigel says emergency personnel responded to the incident, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
     Authorities have not released the man’s name. Weigel says the man was not a student at the university.
 
     Weigel says no foul play is suspected. He says that based on the preliminary investigation, police believe the public is not in danger.
 
      Toxicology tests will be used to determine the man’s cause of death.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot police are investigating a rash of business burglaries over the weekend.
 
     Nine businesses were targeted in break-ins on Saturday. There was no immediate word on whether they might be related.
 
     Businesses that were targeted included fast food restaurants, auto repair and sales facilities, a laundry, a financial services company, a glass business and a construction operation. Police did not say what all was taken.
 
     In one of the burglaries, an employee interrupted the break-in and saw two people wearing hooded sweat shirts flee from the scene.
 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman says she will plead guilty to having sex with a minor.
 
     Raelynn Marie Thiefoe, of Dunseith, is charged in federal court with sexual abuse of a minor. Authorities say she engaged in a sexual act with a boy between the ages of 12 and 16.
 
     The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
 
     A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

 

  OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Figures have dropped for a fifth straight month in a survey of supply managers in nine Midwest and Plains states, providing continuing evidence of a regional economic slowdown.
 
     A report issued Monday says the overall Mid-American Business Conditions Index dropped to 39.6 in December from 40.7 in November, 41.9 in October, 47.7 in September and 49.6 in August.
 
     Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he again blames manufacturing losses linked to the strong dollar and economic weakness among trading partners.
 
     The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests economic growth. A score below that suggests decline.
 
     The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

 

 STANLEY, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota regulators have slated a public hearing in Stanley on a proposed $18 million crude oil pipeline in Mountrail County.
 
     The North Dakota Public Service Commission will take testimony Jan. 12 on Sacagawea Pipeline Co.’s permit application for the new 8-mile long, 12-inch diameter crude oil pipeline and associated facilities.
 
     The pipeline would transport oil from the Palermo Rail Facility owned by Phillips 66 to the Enbridge oil terminal in Stanley. The pipeline will have a maximum capacity of 100,000 barrels per day.
 
     The hearing begins at 10 a.m. at the Mountrail County South Complex in Stanley.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – An animal shelter in Minot will begin same-day adoptions this week.
 
     About 700 pets are adopted through the Souris Valley Animal Shelter each year. Director Randy McDonald says he believes the shelter can increase that number to 1,000 by eliminating questionnaires and other paperwork for potential pet owners.
 
     McDonald  says same-day adoptions should provide a good experience at the animal shelter and help eliminate over-breeding.
 
     Animal shelter officials say many people who cannot adopt a pet on the same day go to a pet store to buy one.

 

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – An annual two-day agricultural conference that typically draws hundreds of farmers is being held in Devils Lake this week.
 
     The 2016 Lake Region Extension Roundup is Tuesday and Wednesday at the Devils Lake Memorial Building and Ramsey County Courthouse.
 
     Officials with the North Dakota State University Extension Service and others will give educational presentations, and businesses will display products and services in commercial booths.
 
     Topics this year include crop production, crop insurance, the federal farm bill and agricultural apps.
 
     Each day begins with a sponsored breakfast, and lunch also is free for participants. Continuing education credits are available for certified crop advisers.

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota has a new poker champion.
 
     Bryan Gustafson, of Stanley, outlasted more than 1,200 other players at the 12th annual North Dakota Texas Hold ’em Championship at the Vegas Motel in Minot. The four-day event wrapped up Saturday.
 
     Gustafson took home the top prize of $50,000. Jeremy Berg of Minot was the runner-up and earned $18,000.

Jill Schlecht of Streeter took third,earning $10,000.
 
     The state poker tournament is modeled after the annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. This year’s tournament drew players from 17 states and Canada.

 

 

 NATIONAL  FOOTBALL  LEAGUE

UNDATED (AP) – The three remaining NFL division titles were settled on the final day of the regular season. The Denver Broncos took the AFC West title and home field throughout the conference playoffs with a 27-20 win over the San Diego Chargers, and the AFC South went to the Houston Texans by virtue of a 30-6 pounding of Jacksonville. Minnesota’s 20-13 win over Green Bay gives the Vikings the NFC North crown.

 Adrian Peterson ran for a touchdown, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn returned a fumble 55 yards for a score and Minnesota claimed its first division title since 2009. The Vikings will host the Seattle Seahawks for a wild-card playoff game next weekend.   The Packers head into the playoffs as a wild card against Washington who  head to the playoffs as NFC East champs with a 9-7 record and a four game winning streak. Kirk Cousins threw for three touchdowns before leaving late in the first half of Washington’s 34-23 win over Dallas.

Seattle warmed up for the NFC wild-card round by ripping the Arizona Cardinals 36-6 behind Russell Wilson’s three touchdown passes.

 Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lis-bur-gur) threw for three touchdowns and the Pittsburgh Steelers grabbed the final AFC wild-card berth by beating Cleveland 28-12. But the Steelers also needed a little help from the Buffalo Bills, who beat the Jets 22-17 to eliminate New York from the postseason picture. Both the Steelers and Jets finished with 10-6 records.

 Carolina has grabbed the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs for the first time in team history, improving to 15-1 with a 38-10 pounding of Tampa Bay.

Kansas City ends the regular season on a team-record, 10-game winning streak following a 23-17 win against Oakland. The Chiefs’ streak allowed them to win the first AFC wild-card berth and challenge Denver for the AFC West title despite a 1-5 start.

 

The Patriots are limping into the playoffs following a 20-10 loss to the Dolphins in Miami. Tom Brady was sacked twice and knocked down at least half a dozen times while throwing a season-low 21 passes. The Pats dropped four of their last six to finish 12-4. The Dolphins finish 6-10.

 The Lions got the better of the Bears 24-20 as Matthew Stafford threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns in what may have been the last game for Jim Caldwell as head coach in the Motor City. The Lions wrapped things up at 7-9, while the Bears were 6-10.

 UNDATED (AP) – The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers have begun their latest house cleaning. The Browns have fired head coach Mike Pettine (PEH’-tihn) and general manager Ray Farmer after two seasons and a 10-22 record, including a 3-13 mark that has landed them the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Jim Tomsula (tahm-SOO’-luh) has been let go as head coach of the Niners after going 5-11 in his lone season at the helm.

Pau Gasol (pow gah-SAHL’) had his 17th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds as Chicago beat Toronto for the second time in a week and a seventh consecutive time overall.

The victory was the ninth in a row for Florida and seventh straight at home. The nine-game winning streak ties Montreal, Washington and the New York Rangers for the longest in the NHL this season. Dmitry Kulikov had two assists for the Panthers.

     KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs owner Clark Hunt predicts that at least one NFL franchise will play in Los Angeles next season.
 
     The Raiders, Rams or Chargers are expected to file relocation papers on Monday, paving the way for a possible shift. Hunt did not speculate with of the three is the leading candidate for relocation.
 
     Hunt is part of a six-man committee made up of league owners that will convene to discuss relocation. The remaining league owners will meet to review their findings the following week and could decide whether one or two teams will move to L.A. for the 2016 season.

     SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller says he will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Fuller originally had said he planned to return to the school but announced the change of mind on Twitter.
 
     Fuller led the Irish in receiving this year with 62 catches for 1,258 yards and 14 touchdowns.

 WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama meets with top law enforcement officials today as he considers a series of executive actions on gun laws. One priority is cracking down on unregulated gun sales by expanding background checks. Meanwhile, the House gets back to work today with the first order of business being final passage of a bill repealing the health care law, which faces a certain veto when it reaches Obama’s desk.
 
     LONDON (AP) – British security officials are analyzing the latest threats from the Islamic State group. They’re looking for clues about the identity of a masked man speaking with a British accent in an IS video. The man says the extremists will soon invade Britain. The video circulated Sunday features an apparent replacement for Mohammed Emwazi, the British-accented man known as “Jihadi John,” who was killed in a drone strike.
 
     BAGHDAD (AP) – An Iraqi official is blaming the Islamic State group for trying to stir up sectarian tensions with the bombing of two Sunni mosques in a predominantly Shiite city in southern Iraq. The government says the bombing in the city of Hilla yesterday damaged both mosques but caused no casualties. The official says security at Sunni mosques in the city is being beefed up.
 
     MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) – A Pakistani minister says 42 militant suspects arrested in eastern Pakistan were supposed to be setting up Islamic State group sleeper cells. Weekend raids in Punjab province also discovered IS literature and weapons. The minister says purported IS Islamabad chief Amir Mansoor and his deputy are among those arrested.
 
     GAUHATI, India (AP) – Officials say at least eight people are dead and buildings are damaged following a strong earthquake in the remote northeastern region of India. More than 100 people were injured in the 6.7 magnitude quake. The death and injuries were caused by falling debris. Police say there are few tall buildings in the region, although a newly constructed six-story building collapsed in Imphal.
