FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The average price of a gallon of gasoline in North Dakota in 2015 was the second-cheapest in the past 10 years due to a worldwide glut of crude oil.
AAA reports that the average was $2.40 per gallon, second only to $2.38 in 2009. The 2015 statewide annual average was nearly a dollar cheaper than the previous year.
The 2015 annual averages for the three largest metro areas were $2.23 in Fargo, $2.37 in Grand Forks and $2.46 in Bismarck.
The average price of diesel in 2015 was $2.67 per gallon, the lowest average for that fuel since 2009. In 2014, diesel averaged $4 per gallon.
AAA says gas prices are likely to remain relatively low this year.

(CSi) January 4, 2016 – Average retail gasoline prices in North Dakota have fallen 4.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.88/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 493 gas outlets in North Dakota. This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $1.99/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Areas nearby North Dakota and their current gas price climate:

Fargo- $1.67/g, down 2.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $1.69/g.
South Dakota- $1.89/g, down 1.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $1.90/g.
Including the change in gas prices in North Dakota during the past week, prices yesterday were 33.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 17.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 5.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 19.9 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.
“Talk about starting the New Year off right,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. “The national average at $1.99 is a great way to begin 2016, and over twenty cents lower than where we started 2015. The good news is that we could see even more price drops before the seasonal lift that will likely begin as we push towards Spring. For any Americans that made resolutions to try and spend less at the pump this year, I think they will be in good shape to achieve that. The fundamentals of oil remain weak which will contribute to low oil prices for some time, while gasoline demand will likely move lower now with the holidays behind us, putting downward pressure on gasoline prices,” DeHaan said.
GasBuddy will be unveiling its 2016 Fuel Outlook in the weeks ahead, which will shed light on what the fuel price climate will be for motorists in the year ahead.
